Just a few days removed from being fairly open about Caleb Williams' struggles, Bears head coach Ben Johnson says he's already seeing growth from his young QB.
Over the weekend, Johnson spoke to reporters about how the former No. 1 pick is "playing a little bit slower than what he's capable of" as he continues to wrap his arms around the team's new offense. But the light is turning on, Chicago's head man says, as the organization gets deeper into training camp.
"I probably just see growth," Johnson said Tuesday, via Bears insider Adam Hoge. "He is so much more comfortable right now. Even yesterday — the walk-through — in terms of moving around. We go from gun, to under [center], to the tight ends are moving, the receivers are moving. We're adding more every day."
"I told him this on the player day off: his process is really clean right now. I'm talking about how he's preparing. I'm really pleased with it," the coach shared. "He's doing the work behind the scenes that no one else is seeing, and we're starting to see the dividends being paid from it."
Johnson has always been pretty clear about Williams' successes and failures since taking the job and it seems like it's only a matter of time before the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner has a full grasp of the coach's system.
Caleb admittedly had an up-and-down season in Year 1, but there were certainly things you could point to to keep Bears fans' hopes alive.
A lot of that has to with the hiring of Johnson, a revamped offensive line and a stable cast of surrounding weapons. But Williams' maturation as a quarterback is just as important as he finds out what does and doesn't work in the National Football League.
2024 was the first time Caleb has really dealt with any sort of failure as a quarterback — going 5-12 as a starter with 10 straight losses from Weeks 8 to 17. Now it's on him to show why he deserved to go first overall over the likes of Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye and Bo Nix — and he just may do it.Ben Johnson's Caleb Williams Admission Should Scare Rest Of NFL first appeared on The Spun on Jul 29, 2025

Highlights from Texas A&M's first preseason practice ahead of the 2025 season

Texas A&M's 2025 season has officially arrived, as the first preseason practice took place on Wednesday night, headlined by the return of star running back Le'Veon Moss, who missed the remainder of the 2024 season after sustaining a lower-body injury in the loss to South Carolina. Head coach Mike Elko enters his second season with high expectations after returning 72% of the 2024 roster, combined with 14 transfer portal additions that are slated to make a significant impact, especially new wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver. After losing defensive linemen Shemar Stewart, Shemar Turner, and Nic Scourton to the NFL, Elko added three edge rushers and former Iowa State defensive linemen Tyler Odyedim from the portal, while former Georgia cornerback Julian Humphrey adds much-needed depth in the secondary. During Wednesday's practice, which was the first time any of us had seen starting quarterback Marcel Reed throw since the spring, I noticed a slight uptick in his velocity and touch. Although only live play will truly prove it, he has taken the next step as a passer. Still, the added speed at wide receiver, and even tight end with former Alabama/Texas TE Amari Niblack on the roster, should help the redshirt sophomore's progress. Why do the Chargers have an extra preseason game? Los Angeles 2025 schedule, how to watch

In a 2024 NFL season full of surprising teams (looking at you, Washington and Minnesota), the Los Angeles Chargers enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds in the league. Los Angeles bounced back from a 5-12 campaign to go 11-6 and finish second in the AFC West. The first year of Jim Harbaugh's tenure as head coach saw the team make the wild-card round of the playoffs and finish the season with the league's No. 1-ranked scoring defense for the first time since 1963. The Chargers retained top coaches on staff from 2024 to 2025 with Greg Roman and Jesse Minter returning to coordinate the offense and defense, respectively. They used much of their draft capital and free agent moves on bolstering the offense around franchise quarterback Justin Herbert. One of the biggest moves was drafting running back Omarion Hampton in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He was widely considered one of the best running backs in the draft and should have a significant role early on as a rookie. The NFL preseason will be the first time Hampton and the other rookies, as well as some of those free agent signings, suit up for the Chargers. Most teams will play three preseason games, but Los Angeles is one of the exceptions. Here's why they'll be playing an extra preseason game in 2025. Why do the Chargers have an extra preseason game? The Chargers have an extra preseason game thanks to the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class. Los Angeles will play the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. This marks the Chargers' first time in the Hall of Fame Game since 1994. One of the best players in Chargers history is part of the 2025 Hall of Fame class: tight end Antonio Gates. The eight-time Pro Bowler spent his entire 16-year career with the Chargers and has more career receiving touchdowns than any other tight end in NFL history. This marks the third year in a row that a former Chargers player or coach will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Former Chargers coach Don Coryell was inducted with the 2023 class and Dwight Freeney was a part of the 2024 class. "Antonio's candidacy is more than just stats, which by themselves are remarkable," Hall of Fame running back and Gates' former teammate LaDanian Tomlinson said in a statement. "His candidacy is about legacy. One that could be seen in the way he inspired his teammates, challenged opponents and coaches. He elevated the tight end position to new heights and inspired an entire generation of young athletes. Chargers preseason schedule Los Angeles will play four preseason games this year, compared to three for most NFL teams. Here's the schedule: Chargers regular season schedule Last season's 11-6 campaign means the Chargers will face some stiffer competition this season. They're already in a division with a Super Bowl contender (Kansas City) and a reigning playoff team (Denver) but will also face every team from the NFC East and AFC South. Their schedule rounds out against the second-placed teams from the NFC North (Minnesota), AFC East (Miami) and AFC North (Pittsburgh).

Daron Payne focused on winning, not money

I had a great sit down interview with Daron Payne after today's big fella entering Year 8 in Washington. It's also the final year of his told me, "I'm just having grinding. I got all the money I want." Daron Payne wants to be one of the main reasons. The former Alabama defensive tackle has been a Redskin/Commander since being drafted in the first round (13 overall) by Washington in 2018. Yet, not until 2024 did Payne enjoy a winning season in the NFL. That's right, Washington had not had a winning record since the 2015 and 2016 seasons when Kirk Cousins was the starting quarterback. Last season, the Commanders turned everything around in Washington, shocking the NFL world by winning 12 regular-season games and two road playoff games. "Man, we were in a good place last year, and I want to be one of the reasons we get to the Super Bowl," Payne told Scott Abraham on Tuesday, following practice. It's important to Payne, seeing all of those seasons without a winning record. Payne certainly realizes success is not going to be automatic in 2025, simply because there was success in 2024 for the Commanders. While Terry McLaurin's contract drama dominates the headlines for the Commanders, money is not an issue for Payne. Abraham mentioned to Payne on Tuesday that this is Payne's final contract year. Payne responded, "I'm just playing ball. Right now, I'm at the point in my career where I am just having fun. Everything I do is fun to me, like working hard, being out here in the sun, playing with these guys, it is fun." It's worth noting that Payne actually has two more seasons remaining on the contract he signed in 2023. Abraham noted that, being a contract year, players may view the year differently. Payne expressed, "Yeah man, I got all the money I want. So, I'm really just (pause)..." Payne then talked of how last year was a special year. This will be the first NFL season for Payne without former Alabama and Washington teammate Jonathan Allen. In 2022, Payne enjoyed a career-high 11.5 quarterback sacks in his contract year. Other career highs that season were his 64 total tackles (32 solo, 32 assists) and 18 tackles for loss and 20 quarterback hits. Payne has been extremely reliable, missing only one game in his seven NFL seasons. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 320 pounds, Payne turned age 28 in May.
