Police recovered the body of a 38-year-old woman from inside a locked house in Kolathur and launched an investigation to ascertain whether she was murdered.
Police identified the body of Saraswathi, 38, of Virudhachalam. She married Ganeshamurthi, a Sri Lankan refugee who lived in Gummidipoondi camp, 16 years ago. The couple had two children. Recently, she and her two children moved to a rented house in Kolathur while Ganeshamurthi remained in Gummidipoondi. Leaving the children with her husband, she came back alone to the rented house in Kolathur on Friday. Since then, there was no response from her to calls from her husband. He asked his friends to check on her. In the meantime, neighbours alerted the police after bad odour from the house.
Upon receipt of information, police personnel in Kolathur came to the spot and broke the lock of the house. They recovered the body and sent it to Government Stanley Hospital for post-mortem. A mobile phone, a two-wheeler and a gold ornament were missing from the house. Police launched an investigation into the death of a woman.

Two Sri Lankans adrift at sea with 200 kg of ganja rescued and arrested off Thanjavur coast

THANJAVUR: Two Sri Lankan nationals found drifting at sea with a plastic diesel can were rescued by local fishermen from Keezhathottam village in Thanjavur district on Thursday morning. However, the rescue soon turned into a drug bust when it was discovered that the duo had 200 kg of ganja packed in seven gunny bags. The suspects have been identified as A Ajanthan (36) and V Jeevanandam (51), both hailing from the Thalaimannar region in Sri Lanka. According to sources, Subramanian and Ramachandran, fishermen from Keezhathottam near Adirampattinam, were fishing off the coast of Maravakkadu when they spotted the two men adrift with a plastic can typically used for storing diesel. Alongside the men, they noticed seven floating gunny bags.

Madras High Court tells MEA to reconsider passport application of ‘stateless' 23-year-old

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court recently came to the rescue of a stateless woman, born to Sri Lankan parents in a refugee camp in Karur, after her passport application was rejected by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) without affording her the opportunity of a hearing. Following a petition filed by the woman, S Harinaa, Justice C Saravanan directed the MEA to reconsider the application within three months by obtaining a fresh report from the police. Harinaa was born to two Sri Lankan nationals in a refugee camp at Rayanoor in Karur district in February 2002. Wanting to study abroad, she had earlier moved the HC in 2022, against rejection of her passport application. While disposing of her petition in June 2023, the court had observed that there are provisions under the Passports Act, 1967, which enables the centre to issue passports to even non-citizens, if it feels it would be in public interest. Since Harinaa holds citizenship neither in Sri Lanka nor India, the court also declared her a stateless person. However, her application was once again rejected in May last year, challenging which she moved the court again. The second rejection order was passed based on a police verification report which included wrong information that Harinaa was born in Sri Lanka. The Deputy Solicitor General of India, opposing Harinaa's plea, told the court the MEA feels that issuance of a Certificate of Identity to Harinaa may not be in the interest of the nation. However, Justice Saravanan observed that there are ample numbers of documents, including Harinaa's birth certificate, to show she was born in India, while there are no records to indicate she was born in Sri Lanka and entered India either legally or illegally. Noting that these aspects were not considered by the MEA, the judge gave the above directions.

Two Sri Lankans held with 210kg ganja off TN coast

Trichy: Two Sri Lankan nationals were arrested for smuggling cannabis through the sea near Adirampattinam in Thanjavur district on Thursday. Local fishers rescued the duo after spotting them struggling in the water with floating parcels of contraband. Around 7am, fishermen from Keezhathottam village noticed two men clinging to bags and containers about four nautical miles from shore. Suspecting foul play, they brought the men and their floating parcels back to land and alerted authorities. The Coastal Security Group (CSG) team from Adirampattinam, led by DSP S Murugan and inspector A Manjula, detained the men for questioning. They were identified as Anthanan Amaladasan, 36, and Jeevanantham Varaprakasam, 51, both from Mannar in Sri Lanka's Northern Province. During interrogation, the suspects reportedly said they had arrived by motorised boat on Wednesday night to procure cannabis from Indian contacts. Their boat capsized on their return journey, and they had been adrift for several hours. Seven parcels recovered from the scene contained around 210kg of ganja. The duo was handed over to Adirampattinam police for further investigation. They have been booked under the Passport Act (for illegal entry), the Maritime Zones Act (for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line), and the NDPS Act (for smuggling narcotics). A police probe is underway.
