Knicks fans are getting permanent ink for playoffs: ‘Way more Knicks tattoos than I've ever done'

New York Post30-05-2025
Knicks pride is more than skin deep.
New York fan Brandon Soler is showing his love for the Big Apple hoops squad Friday by permanently etching a blue and orange team logo tattoo into his shin — and he's just one of many hoops-lovers flocking to city artists to get some team ink, as the Knicks continue to make their deep title run.
'It's New York and the Knicks – I also wanted to represent New York as a whole, where I'm from,' the 45-year-old Bronx man told The Post.

'It's New York Proud. We're all proud people.'
'It was a spur-of-the-moment thing,' he added, as he got the work done at a studio in Gowanus run by artist Steven Avalos.

'Really, just that I'm a big fan and they're doing well this year.'
And Soler isn't afraid of having any regrets if the underdog squad goes down to the Indiana Pacers in game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals Saturday.
He thought it might even bring the team some luck.
'I figured I'd get it in the first round [of the playoffs], we did well against the [Detroit] Pistons and we're doing it better. So I feel like it's more luck,' he said.

Nikhil Dhanani — who was also at Avalos' studio — opted for an arm tattoo with the Knicks' 'NY' logo spelling out 'New York' above the Unisphere from Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens.

'New York's never leaving me,' the 26-year-old said.
'I've wanted the New York Knicks tattooed on me for the longest [time], it's been on my list – and then there was like all this New York pride going on right now,' he said.

'It felt like the right moment to do it.'
Avalos, who tattooed both fans on Friday, told The Post the Knicks' 2025 play off run, which saw them causing wild parties in the streets as they knocked off the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics, is causing a rush to get Knicks tats like he's never seen.
'It's way more Knicks tattoos than I've ever done,' said Avalos, 40, who has scheduled roughly a half-dozen Knicks-themed appointments for this week alone.

'I think this is the craziest I've ever seen Knicks fans, because of the playoffs.
'When it comes to being a Knicks fan, you kind of expect losing,' Avalos added, 'so I think that being a Knicks fan – or being a Jets fan – there's certain New York teams where you think you're never going to win. [Fans] are really just that glad they're doing well this year.'
A rep for Live By The Sword, a tattoo shop with locations in Union Square, Williamsburg and Soho, similarly reported a surge in Knicks ink – and even dropped a 'flash' sheet of ready-made designs on April 25.
'We definitely have had a lot of interest in the Knicks designs,' a rep for the studio told The Post, adding that the flash sheet was shared among local ink lovers nearly 500 times online.

'The Knicks are momentous right now,' said Michael Bellamy, a tattoo artist and owner of Red Rocket Tattoo in Midtown – which has been asked to do a 'handful' of tattoos honoring the Knickerbockers in the last month alone.

Michelle Myles, a tattoo artist and co-owner of Daredevil Tattoo in the Lower East Side, similarly said Knicks fans have been no stranger to her shop — with fans getting everything from the Knicks' logo to team-inspired knuckle tattoos in recent weeks.
'If they continue on, I imagine we'll probably get some more [customers],' she said, noting the shop's upcoming Friday the 13th flash sheet will 'definitely' have Knicks-themed art.

Avalos, a longtime Brooklynite and Long Island native, told The Post that he notices a spike in New York sports team-related tattoos, unsurprisingly, when a team does well — and recalls a surge in Yankees-related tattoos during the Bronx Bombers' World Series streak in the early 2000s.
'The Yankees, I remember, they had a really good era of being champions,' he said, 'so imagine just growing up in New York and going to Yankee Stadium and seeing your home team win: It gave you a lot of pride for the city.
'I think sports tattoos are super important, it gives people the sense of pride of being a New Yorker [and] ownership of this city,' he added — though the Knicks ink may not be limited to just New Yorkers for long.

'Tourists will hop on the bandwagon with that one,' Avalos said, 'if they win the championship.'
The Knicks are down 3 to 2 against the Pacers, who they face in Indiana Saturday night.
If they win, the series will go to it climactic Game 7 finale in New York Monday.

U.S. Captain Keegan Bradley said Bryson DeChambeau will make Ryder Cup team regardless of qualifying

Bryson DeChambeau is going to be a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team this fall no matter what. U.S. captain Keegan Bradley texted Sports Illustrated's Bob Harig after the British Open on Sunday and confirmed that, even if DeChambeau falls out of the top six in the Ryder Cup standings, he'd use a captain's pick on him to ensure that DeChambeau gets to compete with the Americans at Bethpage Black. 'Bryson is going to be a very important piece to us winning the Ryder cup,' Bradley said. 'He brings so much. He brings energy, passion, but most importantly, he's one of the best players on the planet.' DeChambeau posted a final-round 64 on Sunday at Royal Portrush to finish T10 at the British Open. He's now finished inside the top 10 at three of the four major championships this season. But, as DeChambeau competes with LIV Golf, he's no longer eligible for points on the U.S. Ryder Cup standings. He is currently fifth on that list. The top six golfers on that list after the BMW Championship next month will earn automatic spots on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. As DeChambeau holds just a slight lead over Justin Thomas on the list, and there are several other PGA Tour members lurking just outside the cutoff, it's very possible that he could fall out of that top group. After the top six players are locked in, Bradley will then make his six captain's picks to round out his 12-man team. At that point, if necessary, he'd use one on DeChambeau. DeChambeau said he spoke with Bradley 'briefly' at Royal Portrush this week, and that he 'put something in our lockers that was pretty inspirational.' While he didn't reveal what that message was, DeChambeau is clearly in and ready to go for the Ryder Cup. 'It meant a lot,' he said. 'This year's no joke. We're tired of it. We're tired of losing.' DeChambeau, after making the jump to LIV Golf, was not on the United States' team for the last Ryder Cup in 2023. They fell to Europe that year in Rome. He has played on two previous teams, however, including the 2021 squad that won in Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. The Americans haven't lost at home since 2012, when the Europeans edged out a one-point win at Medinah Country Club. With DeChambeau now on board, he's hoping to bring an extra push with him to New York in September. 'I hope I can bring a lot of energy and a tsunami of a crowd that's going to be rooting for Team USA,' he said.

Several other teams pursued Marcus Smart after his contract buyout

On Saturday, veteran guard Marcus Smart agreed to a buyout of his contract with the Washington Wizards that would've paid him $21.6 million this coming season. He quickly agreed to join the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-year, $11 million contract once he clears waivers and once the Lakers clear enough space under the first apron of the salary cap. Smart, 31, has long been known as a defensive menace. He has made three All-Defensive first teams and was named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, and he is also a solid secondary ball-handler and facilitator. As long as he is spry and healthy, he should seriously improve the Lakers' anemic perimeter defense. Perhaps Smart didn't just fall into the Lakers' lap. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks also went after him. "The Lakers, Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks seriously pursued Smart, who received permission to speak to teams along with his agent, Jason Glushon, and had positive conversations with personnel from all three teams, sources said," Charania wrote. "After losing Dorian Finney-Smith, a point-of-attack wing defender was a major position of need for the Lakers." The New York Knicks, who, like the Lakers, are trying to get over the hump and win the NBA championship, reportedly also had interest in Smart. But per Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, the Knicks couldn't offer him enough playing time. The Knicks, who reached the Eastern Conference Finals in May, have a crowded backcourt. They already have Miles McBride, a noted spark plug, coming off the bench, and they also added former Lakers and 2021 Sixth Man of the Year Jordan Clarkson. The Lakers badly need someone such as Smart who can contain opposing guards. His game has waned a bit over the past couple of seasons, and he has appeared in just 54 games over the last two years, but it isn't a stretch to imagine him returning to form this coming season. He could essentially take over the role Gabe Vincent played. Vincent brings effort on the defensive end, but his outside shooting is sporadic, and when he isn't hitting from 3-point range, he seems to be a dead weight on the court.

The iconic athlete and commentator said, 'I [was] losing a part of my identity, which was tennis, or so I thought. It turns out I was still a lot more involved than I thought I would be at the time. What I basically thought I was stopping for in a way was so to allow my ex-wife to sort of have the opportunity to go out and do her thing. And then take care of the kids which I thought, 'Hey that's not a bad thing. They're young and that would be a good thing.' So then to have neither one of those things, the end of the marriage and the end of the career, that was a lot to handle. That seemed a bit overwhelming.' Bensinger continues to probe, asking McEnroe about the emotional end to his professional tennis career. McEnroe said, 'I shouldn't have been on the court. I felt like I was sort of obligated to sort of finish. I mean I guess I didn't have to. I guess I was lucky in a way that they—I played with my brother so, you know, I had some support systems. Patrick was with me. Davis Cup meant a lot to me around that time because I was around people that are supporting me, and my kids were there, and so I was at least getting by—by the skin of my teeth.'
