MTCIT launches gaming development camp to build digital skills
The initiative, launched in partnership with Al Nahda Training Institute and Unity – a global leading platform to create games and interactive experiences – is part of the ministry's Makeen programme to support national digital capabilities.
Held at Al Araimi Boulevard in Seeb, the event was inaugurated under the patronage of H E Dr Ali bin Amer al Shidhani, Undersecretary for Communications and Information Technology.
The camp will train 50 Omanis across two tracks – game programming and animation design – over 24 weeks. Participants will receive both theoretical instruction and hands-on training under the supervision of local and international experts.
Jalila bint Abdullah al Fanna al Araimi, Director of the ministry's Future Skills Development Department, said the programme is designed to prepare youth for the global gaming market.
'The initiative aims to empower jobseekers with a talent for game development by offering practical experience within technology incubators and the opportunity to work on original digital projects,' she said.
She added that the collaboration with Unity marks the first such partnership in the sultanate. 'Unity's technologies power over 50 percent of digital games worldwide. This partnership will help transfer global expertise to Oman,' she said.
The programme is also expected to support the establishment of digital startups in Oman's gaming sector.
Sheikh Humaid bin Juma al Shamsi, Member of the Majlis A'Shura and Chairman of the Board of Al Nahda Training Institute, said the gaming industry is evolving into a complex knowledge-based economy.
'This unique initiative is part of wider efforts to empower Omani youth with digital skills, which have become a key pillar of modern economies,' he said. 'The video game industry today combines programming, design, artificial intelligence and creativity. This camp offers a practical platform to prepare youth for this global sector.'
The Makeen programme is part of Oman's broader digital transformation strategy under Vision 2040, aimed at positioning the sultanate as a regional hub for innovation and emerging technologies.

Dhofar gets sesame cultivation project to boost food security
Salalah – Oman has launched a sesame cultivation project in Dhofar governorate as part of its efforts to enhance food security and reduce reliance on imports. A memorandum of understanding was signed between Specialized Integrated Food Company (Sifco) and the Omani Agricultural Association's Dhofar branch at Salalah Free Zone on Sunday. The agreement covers the cultivation of sesame in the Najd region and supports the national drive to link agriculture with food manufacturing. The initiative is backed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones, and the Salalah Free Zone. In its first phase, the project will cover 600 acres and benefit 35 farmers. Production is estimated at 300 tonnes, with Sifco committed to purchasing the full harvest. Future expansion is under consideration. The sesame crop will supply Omani food manufacturers, particularly producers of tahini and halva. It is also used in cosmetics and traditional medicine. Dr Ali bin Mohammed Tabuk, CEO of Salalah Free Zone, said the project reflects the zone's strategy to encourage partnerships that connect investors with local producers. 'This initiative falls within efforts to support economic development by stimulating qualitative partnerships between investors and the local community,' he said. He added that the project supports sustainable development by building value chains based on local resources. 'The Salalah Free Zone seeks to empower industries based on local production and support integrated value chains,' he said. Officials said the project aligns with Oman Vision 2040 and national efforts to improve self-sufficiency in essential commodities. Sesame is considered well-suited to the desert environment of Najd and has high nutritional and commercial value. The agreement represents a joint effort between government agencies, the private sector, and local farmers. It also aims to support small and medium enterprises in the food industry by ensuring stable supply sources.

R&D centre of OIA-backed US tech venture planned in Oman
MUSCAT: US-based climate innovation tech venture Sense, known for its leadership in smart energy solutions, will establish a Research & Development (R&D) facility in Oman to support the deployment of its technology in the Sultanate of Oman. According to the Oman Investment Authority (OIA)—an investor in the Massachusetts-headquartered firm—the R&D facility is part of a broader initiative to localise Sense's technology for tracking energy consumption in the country. In August 2019, IDO Investments, the tech-focused arm of OIA, joined a group of leading international investors in a funding round for Sense. The US firm develops machine-learning-powered hardware and software that monitor household energy consumption and device usage in real time—helping users reduce energy waste. Commenting on its strategy to support the localisation of Sense's smart energy solutions, OIA stated: 'Sense conducted field trials in Oman to optimise the technology's performance and adapt it to local conditions. The company expanded its partnerships with local energy providers to enhance the national electricity grid's efficiency and strengthen its ability to meet growing energy demand. This partnership paves the way for establishing a research and development center in Oman, supporting the national economy and creating new job opportunities for Omani citizens.' A leader in climate-tech innovation, Sense's groundbreaking direct-to-consumer Home Energy Monitor initially reached over 100,000 homes in the US. The company has since expanded its reach by embedding its technology into smart meters—providing electricity providers with software that enhances grid management and customer engagement. Sense says its mission is to reduce global carbon emissions by transforming the relationship between people, homes, and the electric grid. To this end, it partners with meter manufacturers to offer utilities software that supports their electrification goals by making the grid more scalable and resilient. In Oman, smart meters are playing a key role in helping rationalise electricity consumption by enabling modern digital infrastructure and giving consumers real-time access to their energy usage. Supplanting analog meters—prone to faults and billing errors—smart meters improve billing accuracy, collection efficiency, and customer satisfaction. With access to ongoing consumption trends, consumers can make informed decisions to reduce household electricity use.
