Iranian suspects in Penang hypnosis scam target tourists
Penang acting police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin revealed the group entered Malaysia on social visit passes and rented a car to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Penang on July 27.
Initial investigations show the syndicate operated from a Batu Ferringhi homestay.
Though active in theft cases, no police reports were filed, indicating minor losses. Media reports confirmed the arrest of three men and two women, aged 19 to 35, at a George Town mall under Ops Tourist.
Between July 30 and August 1, three theft reports were lodged by tourists from Taiwan, the Netherlands, and Syria in Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang.
Police seized foreign currencies, two vehicles, and marijuana during the arrests.
Mohd Alwi stated losses totaled RM3,000 across three cases, with investigations ongoing for possible links to other districts.
Authorities are collaborating with the Iranian Embassy for suspect details. The group is remanded until August 6 under the Penal Code and Dangerous Drugs Act.

Govt moots purchase of 16 new buses for FRU after fatal crash

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The home ministry has proposed the procurement of 16 new buses with a capacity of 44 passengers each for the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) following the crash in May that claimed the lives of nine FRU personnel. Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the buses would be used by the FRU for general use and long-distance travel. In a written parliamentary reply, Saifuddin said the ministry proposed that funds be allocated to procure the buses under the 13th Malaysia Plan. He also said the ministry has proposed customising existing FRU vehicles to ensure they fit the set safety specifications, as well as the installation of additional safety components like dash cameras. 'The police are holding discussions with various stakeholders concerning improvements to SOPs (involving the transportation of FRU personnel). 'The date of implementation of the new SOPs will be set once the procedures are finalised and approved by the police force's leadership,' he said. The 45-year-old lorry driver, Rudi Zulkarnain Mat Radi, was charged on May 16 with nine counts of causing death by reckless driving. He claimed trial to all the charges. A preliminary report by the task force investigating the crash also found that the tipper lorry was carrying 40,960kg of gravel, exceeding the permitted limit of 24,000kg by 70.67%.

Man caught after failed snatch theft attempt in Setia Alam
SHAH ALAM: A man's attempt to snatch a necklace from a local in Setia Alam was thwarted when bystanders caught him yesterday evening. Shah Alam police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the incident occurred at 7.07 pm when the 37-year-old victim was heading to his car. The suspect, riding a motorcycle, tried to pull off the victim's necklace, but the victim fought back quickly. 'The suspect lost control and fell from his motorcycle. He tried to escape but was caught by nearby bystanders. Police later confirmed that the suspect, aged 30, owned the motorcycle but had used a fake licence plate. He is now under remand until August 7,' he said in a statement. Mohd Iqbal urged the public to remain alert and avoid being alone in isolated areas to reduce the risk of crime.
