Cubs Predicted to Acquire Twins All-Star Joe Ryan for Huge 3-Player Package

A lot of teams could really use the Minnesota Twins' Joe Ryan, but the Chicago Cubs may be at the top of the list.
The Cubs have a couple of excellent left-handers at the top of their rotation, but they're missing the presence of a workhorse righty. That's especially poignant as they've fallen behind the Milwaukee Brewers, whose rotation is well-balanced and very deep, in the division race.
Trading for Ryan, a first-time All-Star this season who also has two years of control left after this season, would be expensive. But just how expensive? Is the asking price going to exceed what the Cubs are willing to surrender?

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JUNE 22: Joe Ryan #41 of the Minnesota Twins celebrates recording a complete game shutout against the Boston Red Sox after the game at Target Field on June 22, 2023 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Twins defeated the Red Sox 6-0. MoreJust Baseball's Ryan Finkelstein and Jay Staph believe the price will be just within reason, allowing the Cubs to use their excellent farm system to make a splash.
On Friday, Finkelstein and Staph predicted that the Cubs would acquire Ryan, sending the Twins a three-prospect package including catcher Moises Ballesteros, infielder Jefferson Rojas, and right-handed pitcher Jaxon Wiggins.
"For a team with World Series aspirations and a deep farm to boot, we are shooting for the stars with this one. So why not grab the best ace with control and swing a trade for Joe Ryan?" asked Finkelstein and Staph. "While no team ever truly wants to trade their ace until they absolutely have to, this would be the rare chance to receive three top 100 prospects in one deal. That's not an offer they would be able to turn down lightly."
How good has Ryan been this season? Among 61 qualified starting pitchers, he ranks 12th in ERA (2.63), 12th in strikeouts (132), seventh in opponent batting average (.163) and in fourth WHIP (0.90). Add in the years of control, and it's hard to imagine the Twins giving him up for any inferior package to the above proposal.
While it might make Cubs fans wince to give up so much talent in one go, the reality is that this is the time to push the chips to the center. And as long as Ryan remains healthy, he'd be able to help with two more pennant chases at a minimum.

LOOK: Matt Ryan makes appearance at Falcons training camp
Former Falcons QB was in attendance for Sunday's training camp practice The Atlanta Falcons had a special visitor in attendance as they went through their third training camp practice on Sunday morning. Former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan brought his sons down to the Flowery Branch facility to get a closer look at this year's team. Ryan, who started for Atlanta from 2008 to 2021, has made the transition to television analyst following his retirement. The former league MVP met with second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. over the offseason to pass along some wisdom. Penix, who is entering his first full season as the Falcons' starting QB, said he received advice on how to plan for the offseason from Ryan. Since the team has not made the playoffs since Ryan was still playing for Atlanta, having him back around couldn't hurt. During his 14-year run with the Falcons, Ryan passed for 59,735 yards, 367 touchdowns and 170 interceptions. The former third overall pick made four Pro Bowls, one All-Pro team, and was the 2008 Offensive Rookie of the Year. Penix started the final three games of the 2024 season in relief of Kirk Cousins, passing for 775 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. He also rushed for a score on the ground during his impressive 312-yard, three-touchdown performance in the season finale. The future looks bright with Penix under center as the team attempts to finally snap its seven-year playoff drought in 2025.

Pirates Expected To Cut Ties With $77 Million Hurler In Trade Deadline Deal
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Pirates would be buyers at the trade deadline if it were up to Paul Skenes. Skenes seems ready to bring a World Series to Pittsburgh. Unfortunately for the Pirates faithful, Skenes is seemingly the only one with that mindset. For what feels like the tenth year in a row, the Pirates will be sellers at the trade deadline. It's unclear how aggressively they'll sell, but it's almost certain they'll trade a few valuable assets in the coming days. USA Today's Bob Nightengale recently reported the Pirates were expected to cut ties with pitcher Mitch Keller in a trade ahead of the deadline on Thursday. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JULY 2: Mitch Keller #23 of the Pittsburgh Pirates in action during the game against the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park on July 2, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JULY 2: Mitch Keller #23 of the Pittsburgh Pirates in action during the game against the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park on July 2, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania."The Pirates continue to listen to offers for everyone on the team but Paul Skenes and Oneil Cruz and are still expected to move starter Mitch Keller," Nightengale wrote. "The Cubs desperately want another starter at the deadline, targeting Mitch Keller of the Pirates, and would include outfield prospect Owen Caissie to make it work." The idea behind trading Keller makes a lot of sense. The righty is never going to have more trade value than he does right now. He's having a solid season, but his value comes from his team control. If a team trades for him now, they'd be getting the rest of this season, all of next season, all of 2027 and all of 2028 with Keller under affordable team control. For the Pirates, this would mean they'd net a haul in return. And they don't necessarily need Keller on their roster. The Pirates have a loaded farm system of arms, with a lot of the top pitching prospects nearing their big league debuts. Names like Hunter Barco, Thomas Harrington, and Bubba Chandler jump off the page at you, but the Pirates' system is even deeper than that. Trading Keller wouldn't hurt the team. In fact, it would likely help the team moving forward. It's the right move to make. More MLB: Mariners 'Aggressively Pursuing' Trade To Reunite With $66 Million Slugger

Dodgers to Consider Reunion With Playoff Hero: Report
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. As the Dodgers search the trade market for relief help, a member of their World Series-winning bullpen is reportedly set to throw for the team. Free agent Joe Kelly was a postseason hero for the Boston Red Sox in 2018 when they beat the Dodgers in the World Series, then for the Dodgers when they defeated the Tampa Bay Rays for the 2020 championship. More news: Yankees Make Trade, Acquire All-Star Third Baseman: Reports Although Kelly finished last season on the Dodgers' injured list, and has yet to sign a new contract for 2025, he never formally announced his retirement. Now 37, Kelly is set to throw for the Dodgers — a necessary step if the reliever were to reunite with the team that signed him twice in the last six years, and traded for him at the 2023 deadline. Through 2024, Kelly had pitched 13 seasons, going 54–38 with a 3.98 ERA over 839 innings, and 767 strikeouts against 355 walks. (2020, 2024) plus another with Boston in 2018. Kelly appeared in all five World Series games in 2018 without allowing a run and striking out six batters in 10 innings for the Red Sox. In 2020, he made five postseason appearances for the Dodgers, totaling 3.2 innings, and didn't allow a run in four of them. More news: Former Yankees Hitting Coach Destroys A-Rod's Critique of Anthony Volpe Since 2016, when he focused on relieving full-time, Kelly is 4-2 with a 3.23 ERA in 30 postseason games, with nine walks and 32 strikeouts in 30.2 innings. The Dodgers could use more swing-and-miss stuff from a bullpen that has lost most of its high-leverage relievers to injuries in 2025. More news: Veteran Pitcher Announces Sudden Retirement From Baseball Blake Treinen, Michael Kopech and Brusdar Graterol have spent most or all of the season on the injured list. They were recently joined by Tanner Scott (elbow). Kirby Yates, who signed a $13 million contract with the Dodgers in December, has a 6.00 ERA in eight July appearances. The Dodgers have room in their bullpen for Kelly. The only question is whether his command, control, and velocity is up to standard. It seems the Dodgers will find out soon.
