TikTok Tops the List of Most Popular Mobile Apps in the UAE for 2024

Hi Dubai05-02-2025

A recent report has highlighted the mobile applications that captured the most attention from UAE residents in 2024, with TikTok emerging as the clear leader.
According to Sensor Tower's "State of Mobile 2025" report, the short-video app took the top spot, with residents spending an average of 2 hours daily on the platform.
The report reveals that the UAE's 11.2 million residents collectively spent a staggering 7.63 billion hours on TikTok last year. This translates to about 700 hours per resident. Haleema Saud, a local student, is one of many users who spend significant time on the app. "On weekdays, I spend three to four hours on TikTok, and on a free day, I can easily spend eight hours just watching videos on everything from cooking to computer engineering,"
she shared.
Globally, TikTok recently made headlines due to concerns over user data security, especially in the US, where efforts to ban the app have been ongoing. Despite such controversies, TikTok's dominance continues in the UAE.
Following TikTok, Telegram ranks as the second most popular app in the UAE, with residents averaging one hour a day on the messaging platform. Other frequently used apps in the country include WhatsApp Business, MX Player, Phone by Google, Google Maps, PLAYit, and Gmail.
In terms of app downloads, TikTok was the second most downloaded app in the UAE last year, just behind VPN Proxy Master. Social media apps continued to dominate, with Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Messenger also among the most downloaded.
In the finance sector, the buy-now-pay-later platform Tabby topped the charts, followed by digital wallets like Taptap Send and C3Pay. E-commerce also saw growth, with Chinese app Temu becoming the most downloaded shopping app in the UAE and 15 other major markets, thanks to its direct-from-factory pricing model that offers consumers more affordable options amidst economic uncertainty.
Other popular shopping apps included Trendyol, Shein, Noon, and Amazon, which rounded out the top five.

BYD to invest $94 million in new Hungary plant

Chinese automaker BYD will invest 32 billion forints ($94 million) in a new plant in the northern Hungarian town of Komarom, tripling its annual capacity to 1,250 electric buses and trucks, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said. Under right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Hungary has become an important trade and investment partner for China, in contrast with some other European Union nations considering becoming less dependent on the world's second-largest economy. 'We Hungarians do not consider East-West cooperation a threat, but rather an opportunity, a big opportunity,' Szijjarto was quoted as saying on Friday, adding that the government would support the project with a 3.1 billion forint grant. Orban, who has spearheaded a drive in central Europe to bring Chinese EV and battery manufacturing plants to Hungary, has said his landlocked country did not want to be squeezed into either bloc and wanted to keep trading with both sides. BYD, which is also building an electric car factory in southern Hungary and expects to establish a European centre in the country, will establish a research and development laboratory alongside its latest investment in an apparent reward for Hungary's condemnation of European tariffs on Chinese EVs. Orban started bringing his country closer to Beijing after he came to power in 2010. Warm political relations turned into investments about a decade later when battery and EV makers started to bring production to Hungary. Reuters

Nike warns Trump tariffs could cost it nearly $1 billion

27 June 2025 14:27 London (PA Media/dpa) Sportswear giant Nike has warned that US President Donald Trump's trade tariffs could cost it around an extra $1 group said it was taking action to offset the hit, having recently warned it would raise prices on some trainers and clothing in the US to counter rising tariffs. It currently makes around 16% of its footwear in China, which is then imported into the US, but is looking to reduce this to a "high single-digit range" by the end of the current financial year. Supply would be "reallocated to other countries around the world."Matt Friend, Nike's chief financial officer, said: "These tariffs represent a new and meaningful cost headwind." He said the cost impact would be about $1 billion if tariffs remain at current added: "We will optimise our sourcing mix and allocate production differently across countries to mitigate the new cost headwind into the United States, despite the current elevated tariffs for Chinese products imported into the United States. He also said the group was looking to "minimize the overall impact to the consumer," although it confirmed it would start pushing through price hikes in the US starting from the costs could also be cut under plans to offset the expected cost comments came as Nike reported its worst quarterly earnings in more than three years, although the out-turn was better than feared on Wall Street, helping its US-listed shares lift overnight on executive Elliott Hill, who returned from retirement last year to take the helm, is leading a turnaround at the group. He said the group's results showing a 12% drop in fourth quarter revenues to $11.1 billion were "not where we want them to be." "As we enter a new fiscal year, we are turning the page and the next step is aligning our teams to lead with sport through what we are calling the sport offence," he said. Friend also said the sales decline "reflected the largest financial impact" of its revamp, adding "we expect the headwinds to moderate from here."
