FIFA Club World Cup: Chelsea prepares for resolute Fluminense side in semifinal clash

The Hindu12 hours ago
Chelsea will try to reach a second major final in three months when it faces Fluminense in Tuesday's FIFA Club World Cup semifinal in East Rutherford, N.J.
On May 28, the Blues rallied to a 4-1 win over Real Betis in the UEFA Europa Conference League final.
Domestically, it also secured a fourth-place Premier League finish and a return to the UEFA Champions League next year under first-year manager Enzo Maresca.
After all that, it has looked like one of the fresher European sides in this tournament while reaching the semifinal stage. Perhaps that reflects the benefits of having a youthful core, without a single player on the tournament squad above age 27.
'You can have an advantage or disadvantage -- it depends a bit,' Maresca said, as reported by Football London. 'We have one season together being the youngest in the Premier League, and we were able to win games. Tomorrow, it will be the same. We are the first- or second- youngest in the competition, and we will face the oldest one.'

While Chelsea will be favoured, Brazilian teams have been the story of this tournament, sending all four of their entrants to the knockout phase and two to the quarterfinals.
Fluminense will be the third team the Blues have faced. Chelsea defeated Palmeiras in the quarterfinals 2-1 on a first-half goal from Cole Palmer -- his non-penalty goal since a 2-2 Premier League draw with Bournemouth on January 14 -- and a late own goal. Before that, it suffered a 3-1 defeat to Flamengo in the group stage.
Comparatively, Fluminense enters in better form than those previous Brazilian foes, unbeaten in 11 across all competitions. While Hercules leads the club with two tournament goals, the strength of head coach Renato Gaucho's side is a defence that has conceded only five times during that unbeaten run, anchored by 44-year-old goalkeeper Fabio.
'With all due respect to Chelsea, we don't want to stop here,' Gaucho told FIFA.com. 'We're going to do all we can psychologically, physically, technically, tactically. We have to put everything into this. A lot of people thought we couldn't do it, but we're in the semifinals.'
Fluminense earlier lost 4-0 to Manchester City in the final of the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup, the last played in its annual, smaller single-elimination format. Chelsea won the competition in 2021, though there are very few carryovers from that squad currently.
Chelsea will miss striker Liam Delap and defender Levi Colwill to yellow-card suspensions, while Fluminense defender Juan Freytes and midfielder Martinelli are also serving one-match bans.

Liverpool Resume Training For First Time Since Diogo Jota's Tragic Death

Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car accident on Thursday. The incident occurred around 12:30 am local time in the Spanish province of Zamora. According to Spanish police, Jota's car veered off the road while attempting to overtake another vehicle. A tyre blowout caused the car to lose control and catch fire. A memorial site has been established at Liverpool's iconic Anfield stadium, where fans and former players have recently left hundreds of bouquets of flowers, shirts, scarves, and pictures. Their funeral was held on Saturday in the Portuguese town of Gondoma, at the Matriz de Gondomar church, located 33 kilometres from Porto. Some players were initially expected to report back to the club on Friday, but the tragic news prompted them to delay their plans. The Liverpool squad, led by Virgil Van Dijk and head coach Arne Slot, attended Jota's funeral to pay their respects. Who Is Diogo Jota? Jota, 28, was a significant player for both Portugal and Liverpool. Since joining the club in 2020 from Premier League side Wolves, he contributed to winning major trophies including the Premier League, FA Cup, and two EFL Cups. During his tenure at Anfield, he scored 65 goals in 182 matches and was highly regarded for his work ethic and ability to perform in critical moments. For Portugal, Jota earned 49 caps and scored 14 goals. He was part of the squad that won the UEFA Nations League title in 2019 and again in 2025, when Portugal defeated Spain in the final. The forward had celebrated that victory with his teammates just weeks ago. When Will Liverpool Play Next? Liverpool's first pre-season friendly is set for Sunday against Championship side Preston, but ticket sales for this match have been suspended pending a final decision on whether it will proceed.

Diogo Jota Death: Speeding Likely Cause Of Liverpool Star's Car Crash

Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota was likely speeding when his car veered off a motorway in Spain last week killing him and his brother, Spanish police said on Tuesday. The shock deaths of Jota, 28, and Andre Silva, 25, on July 3 plunged the football world into mourning, less than two weeks after the striker had got married. An ongoing investigation is examining "the marks left by one of the vehicle's wheels... everything points to a possible excessive speed beyond the road's speed limit", the Civil Guard said. "All the tests conducted so far indicate that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota," it added. The force had previously said a tyre had probably blown out while the vehicle was overtaking, causing it to crash and burst into flames in the northwestern province of Zamora. Just hours before the accident, Jota had posted a video of his June 22 wedding to partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children. The deaths sparked an outpouring of grief, particularly in the brothers' native Portugal and at Jota's Premier League club Liverpool. Political leaders as well as star players from Portugal and Liverpool joined family and friends at the funeral on Saturday in the Porto suburb of Gondomar. Following spells at Atletico Madrid, Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Jota became a fan favourite at Liverpool after joining the Premier League giants in 2020. He netted 65 times for the Reds in five seasons, lifting the League Cup and FA Cup in 2021/22 and helping them win a record-equalling 20th English league title last season. The striker also earned 49 caps for Portugal and was part of the team that won this year's UEFA Nations League. Younger brother Andre played in midfield for FC Penafiel in Portugal's second tier.

Striker Wilson leaves Newcastle after five seasons

London, July 8 (UNI) Striker Callum Wilson confirmed that he is leaving Newcastle United after five seasons with the club. Wilson scored 49 goals in 130 appearances for Newcastle United after joining from Bournemouth in 2020, despite a series of injury setbacks that frequently disrupted his campaigns. He played a pivotal role in helping the Magpies qualify for the 2023-24 Champions League, as well as finishing fifth in last season's Premier League, and lifting the club's first domestic silverware since 1955 with the League Cup. The 33-year-old former England striker had been negotiating a contract extension after his previous deal expired on June 30, but will now move on, with the United States a possible destination. "To all you Magpies, it's time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years at the Toon," wrote Wilson on Monday. "Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights." "I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. All good things come to an end, but there's no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my family's hearts," he added. The club also paid tribute to Wilson on social media. "From scoring on his debut against West Ham in 2020 to wearing the iconic number 9 shirt, Callum has played a huge part in our success in recent years, and we thank him for all his contributions," read a club message.
