Abandoned baby found in holdall in car park traces parents on ITV Long Lost Family
Sarah Meyer will be remembered by many as the 'baby in Pink'. The 24-year-old was abandoned by her mother when she was a newborn baby and hit the headlines after being found in a holdall sitting in a multi-story carpark when she was just an hour old, wrapped up in pink towel and a white shawl.
Sarah is now the youngest person to search for a relative on ITV Long Lost Family: Born Without A Trace.
Dubbed 'Baby in Pink' by the press at the time, Sarah's discovery was a huge national news story and led to a nationwide search for the mother of the tot. Sarah even appeared on This Morning with a police sergeant, as cops went to desperate measures to locate her family.
Then host of the ITV show, Judy Finnegan, told viewers at the time: 'This little sprog was abandoned in a multi-story carpark. She was barely an hour old, weighing just 7lbs.'
However all efforts led to dead ends despite many public appeals and Sarah's birth mum didn't come forward. She was adopted at the age of three months old by mum and dad Jo and Pierre, who already had another adopted daughter, Jess.
Viewers of the Long Lost Family spin off will see the emotional journey everyone ends up on when Sarah attempts to find out the truth behind her birth story. The programme, hosted by Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell, attempts to help foundlings, which means people who were abandoned by their birth family as babies, sometimes in unusual places including a phone box, a cardboard box or church steps.
The upcoming instalment will reveal that Sarah's umbilical cord had been cut when she was found, but not clamped, meaning it could have been a home birth.
Baby Sarah was then sent to hospital where she was under the care of a host of nurses who took her under their wing.
Sarah says: 'On the news, I was the Baby in Pink because I was in the pink towel wrapped in the blanket.
'I was named Caroline after the nurse who looked after me and Pembrooke after my car park. It's like a little secret identity of mine. Now my middle name is Caroline."
Sarah, who still owns the town and holdall she was found in, opens up about her close relationship with her own family and says that she and sister Jess were always told they were adopted, as writes the Mirror.
She went on: 'I want my birth parents to know that they shouldn't feel any remorse because I've had a wonderful life. But I'd like an explanation because it is something that is missing, to know where I come from. Why was I abandoned?'
Sarah goes back to the car park she was found in as part of the episode and is left wondering who would leave a baby in such a busy area.
She said: 'I was an evening baby and 30 minutes to an hour old. So I was literally fresh out of the womb.'
She also gets a letter from a police evidence box, which was sent to investigating officers 10 days after she was discovered in the car park.
The letter gives no clues, and is typed and unstamped.
It reads: 'Please look after my little girl. I love her so much, but just can't cope with another baby. Thank you to all the police officers involved, hospital staff, and the members of the public for their help. Thank you.'
As part of the episode, Sarah is reintroduced to Police Sergeant Wendy Whiting, the first on the scene when she was found and someone who stayed with her case for the duration of its development.
Wendy reveals when the baby was found, the person who discovered her thought she'd found a bomb at first.
Wendy says: 'I remember the radio message coming out and thinking, 'Did I just hear that right?' An abandoned baby, no clothes on, we were concerned.'
The ITV research team are helped by Sarah's young age and are able to access documents quickly compared to more historical investigations.
They soon establish who her birth parents are and find out that her mum was in her late teens when Sarah was born, and already had a child.
However, Sarah's birth mum is not as easy to track down, and doesn't respond to an approach by researchers.
Sarah, who now lives in Northern Ireland with her partner Shannon and has a cybersecurity degree, says: 'It's good to hear that she's at least alive and is out there. It leaves the door open for her to come and meet me if she wants to. I'll never close that door. I respect that it's such a big thing for her. I understand that she might not be ready. I want her to see that I've lived a good life and that I'm not angry with her.'
There is good news also as Sarah's birth father, who has a partner and a daughter, reveals he never knew of her existence but is keen to get to know her. He stays anonymous to protect the birth mum's identity but is overcome with emotion as he says: 'It's very upsetting to know that my daughter was just left there in that situation. Anything could have happened to her.'
Sarah's birth dad then wonders if his late mum would have seen her baby granddaughter and not known, as she'd worked at the hospital unit where Sarah was taken to.
As Long Lost Family fans are accustomed to, there's then an emotional reunion and exchanging of photos as Sarah meets her father and they note their similar physical attributes, and common interests.
He says: 'My daughters can get to know each other and we can all be a family together.'
Sarah adds: 'I've been waiting a long time, I just didn't think it would be possible. He was as I imagined and more, beyond what I expected. I can't wait to get to know him more. The past is in the past and the adventure is only beginning.'

Emmerdale spoilers for next week reveal killer John Sugden does a U-turn where his brother Robert Sugden is concerned, amid a predicted downfall for the villain on the ITV soap John Sugden could be about to change his agenda on Emmerdale amid him targeting his brother Robert Sugden. As it stands, Robert is the only one really onto killer John and his dark secrets. But given John is now married to Robert's ex-husband Aaron Dingle, poor Robert's being accused of jealousy. He's actually pretty rattled, after realising months ago that there was something not quite right with his secret sibling. Not only did a threat and some "obsessive" and "creepy" behaviour leave him convinced John was hiding something sinister, but in recent weeks he's come to the conclusion that he could be a killer too - amid fans spotting a clue that a downfall is on the cards. It comes as Robert learned for a fact that Owen did not kill Nate Robinson, and given John was at his house before his "suicide" it's all starting to piece together. He's convinced John has to have killed Nate, or at least that it's likely, knowing Owen has been set up. So to find out John has been somewhat of a hero for months, saving Chas after she was drugged with her own medication as well as rescuing Jacob Gallagher after an allergic reaction, Robert is sure he's onto something. Viewers know John has orchestrated many of these events and more to be the village saviour. No one's noticed how odd it is that John is always there at the right time, or the wrong time. No one, except for Robert of course. All this has done though is make Robert a target. But spoilers for next week seem to allude to John taking a different approach, just days on from him getting dirt on the character and trying to expose him. So as it stands, John is spying on Robert via a listening device he's planted in the house. We've seen him listen into his chat with Liam Cavanagh, where he made it clear he would find out what John is hiding and exposing him. John panicked to hear Robert was well and truly onto him, while he soon got another shock when he heard Robert chatting with new villain Ray. It's then that he heard about their secret drug deal, and the fact Robert had stolen Lewis Barton's weed from the farm and sold it to Ray. This is why Ray had two masked intruders head to the farm this week, causing drama with Kyle and Moira. In an upcoming episode we see John seemingly spilling the beans to Ross, Lewis' brother, about his deceit. John is keen to destroy his brother, taking different approaches to do this. But just days later, it seems John is either having a change of heart or a change of action. In scenes next week we see him persuading Aaron to go easy on Robert, and to not give him a hard time. So why would John want people to be nice to Robert? Surely it can't just be to make himself look good, we've gone beyond that with their feud and at any moment, a relentless Robert could find what he needs to expose John. Perhaps it's to wind Robert up more with his fake kindness and with villagers, against Robert, inevitably telling him how it's "amazing" John who has encouraged them to be nice to him. So yes it could be to tear Robert down and make him look worse, or maybe he really has had a change of heart and feels bad for him. Love Island fans are convinced they know who has been dumped from the villa ahead of the final. Anticipation is high for another enthralling episode of Love Island tonight, with a couple facing the harsh reality of being axed from the Island mere days before the grand finale. Eagle-eyed fans are now speculating that Helena and Blu have been given the boot after footage of Dejon, Harry, Cach, Jamie, Conor, and Ty filming in Mallorca's streets surfaced on TikTok. The clip shows the lads strolling down the street for the cameras, conspicuously without Blu. Given that Helena and Blu were the only pair not romantically linked, following Harry's admission of lingering feelings for his ex, Shakira, their absence has raised eyebrows. For former EastEnders and Doc Martin star, Joe, 46, the plotlines have proved a blast to film with the actor going as far today to reveal he has always rated the soap as being the 'friendliest' since shooting to fame 25 years ago in EastEnders. He even admits he used to think some Hollyoaks' stars came across more like 'footballers' than soap actors. Joe reveals: 'Everyone has been so welcoming since I joined and I am loving filming the scenes. 'What is funny is years ago when we went to the Soap Awards, we – the EastEnders mob - would all say at the end of it, 'Emmerdale are the nicest lot'. 'You'd speak to these guys and you'd see the Hollyoaks' guys flexing, they would always wear white dinner jackets - slightly like footballers. 'Coronation Street were all interesting people. Emmerdale were always the most genuine and lovely people, so when I saw Jeff (Hordley), we were laughing about how we'd met many years ago. 'The fact they have been really nice since I arrived has helped.' He teases the plot lines will get very dark in the coming weeks with some drugs even going astray. Horrifying moment Emmerdale's April comes face to face with man who committed disgusting act on her while homeless 'It's also set to cause more upset for fan favourite Marlon Dingle as his daughter April, played by Amelia Flanagan, looks set to get embroiled in the drug drama. 'Ray is such a fun character to play,' adds Joe. 'We've been filming in the park and my character sees the youngsters as easy manipulation. 'I can't say too much but Ray has been handing over wads of cash! I get to peel off fifty pounds notes!' Last month, Joe revealed how his 14-year-old son, Casper – Cass for short - in particular thinks it is pretty cool his dad is playing a drug gangster. Today he confides, Cass,14, has been inspired to follow in his footsteps one day. And Joe – also a proud dad to Lyla, 18, and Daisy, 12 - says he has seen his own life flash before him as he encourages Cass to pursue his dreams. But he smiles as he reveals his son definitely doesn't have any plans to land a role in a soap. Instead, he's hoping to one day star in a Netflix drama. 'Cass wants to be an actor, 'says Joe. 'He is desperate. He is like 'dad I want to be on Stranger Things!' This is the YouTube and Netflix generation; they want to be in Marvel films!' Joe goes on to admit, however, he initially tried to put his son off before seeing just how talented he is. 'I told him 'Don't do it, get a proper job'. It's a strange business to go into and there is rejection. 'I do feel it as a parent but he is really good. Genuinely so and I have now helped him get an agent. He has been in Bugsy and he's had some very good auditions and got very close.' Reflecting on how much his life has turned a full circle, Joe adds: 'What is weird is my dad used to be my chaperone and what's weird is there I was recently sitting in Manchester taking him to an audition! It feels like the circle of life is turning.' How will he feel if Cass does land his first major TV role? 'It's surreal,' replies Joe. 'I've explained the risks and I do worry about the cost on a young mind and rejection but he says he is up for it! Fingers crossed!' Whilst Cass dreams of being the next Stranger Things star, Joe says the role of British soaps still have a huge one to play. He praises soap bosses for ensuring they can now be streamed, like Netflix shows. Says Joe: 'The way people watch TV is changing but soaps are finding their way in that people will come back to the recurring storylines. Soap's most harrowing teen storylines We take a look at other harrowing teen soap storylines from soaps Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. Belle Dingle's schizophrenia in Emmerdale - Belle's (Eden Taylor-Draper) traumatic journey in Emmerdale took a dark turn when, after accidentally killing her best friend Gemma at just 16, her mental health began to spiral. The storyline, which saw Belle struggling with her grief and guilt, showcased her battle with hearing Gemma's voice inside her head, leading to a dramatic decline in her well-being. Hannah Ashworth's anorexia in Hollyoaks - Viewers were horrified as they watched Hannah (Emma Rigby), a seemingly innocent teen, spiral into dangerous behavior, starving herself in an attempt to achieve what she thought was the ideal body. As Hannah's condition worsened, the storyline became more intense, culminating in her being hospitalised for two months as she fought for her life. Bethany Platt's grooming ordeal in Coronation Street - Vulnerable schoolgirl, played by Lucy Fallon, was at the centre of one of Corrie's darkest storylines to date when she fell under the spell of her older boyfriend and sexual predator. 'They have characters who they love and the fact soaps are still part of the schedules on every channel is a testament to the work they put into it and the quality.' As for what lies ahead for Ray and his drug dealing and Joe warns: 'Ray is determined to get what he wants, so that lends itself to many different scenarios. 'If people say: 'we don't want to grow (the drugs) anymore', it puts everyone in a difficult situation. 'Ray knows what they are growing is so good and it sells well. He is very manipulative!' Emmerdale runs every weekdays on ITV1 and STV1 at 7.30pm.
