OPEN// PM directs offering livestock station to private sector for management, operation
CAIRO, April 10 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli directed on Thursday offering the livestock station project in Al Hamam village in the upper Egyptian governorate of Assiut and other animal husbandry facilities to the private sector for management and operation.
Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa El Din Farouk reiterated the state's commitment to improving livestock production within the framework of Egypt's Vision 2030, which aims to promote sustainable development in the agricultural sector and achieve food security through the application of the latest scientific methods.
He noted that efforts to improve the quality of livestock and poultry production include upgrading the breeds in Egypt whether local and imported ones to contribute to achieving self-sufficiency and supporting the Egyptian national economy.
Salah Qutb, Director General of the Veterinary Medicine Directorate in Assiut Governorate, said the station covers an area of 14 feddans, including 32 plots of cultivated land used for feeding the animals.
He added that it contains livestock pens with a capacity of up to 1,000 head of cattle.
He added that the station now includes 512 head of cattle, including 363 buffalo and 149 Friesian cows.
The station also includes an automated milking parlor with a daily production capacity of 120 kilograms of milk, accommodating 40 head of cattle at a time. (MENA)

The January 19 ceasefire agreement in Gaza would not have been possible without the intervention of the current US administration,' he said, pointing to Washington's influence and Egypt's desire for further American involvement. Egypt, Spain explore enhanced agricultural cooperation
Alaa Farouk, Egypt's Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, met with his Spanish counterpart, Luis Planas, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, to discuss avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector. The meeting is part of Egypt's broader strategy to reinforce ties with EU nations and enhance the international presence of its agricultural exports. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the 6th Conference of African and European Union Ministers of Agriculture and Food Security, held at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations headquarters in Rome. The ministers focused on key issues essential for bolstering food security and promoting sustainable agricultural development. Central to the talks were water management strategies, particularly efficient usage practices, and the implementation of advanced field irrigation systems. Farouk underscored the importance of partnering with Spain to introduce cutting-edge technologies in smart agriculture and modern irrigation methods. He also highlighted opportunities for knowledge exchange across agricultural value chains and encouraged increased Spanish investment in Egypt's agri-business sector. Planas, in turn, commended the exceptional quality of Egyptian agricultural products and their rising profile in international markets. He expressed keen interest in enhancing trade in agricultural and food commodities between the two countries and extended a formal invitation to Farouk to visit Spain later this year, notably to attend a major agricultural exhibition set to take place in Madrid. Egyptian Parliament approves 12% annual hike in cigarette prices
The Egyptian House of Representatives, in a general session on Sunday chaired by Speaker Hanafy Gebaly, approved a government-submitted draft law amending select provisions of the Value Added Tax Law (Law No. 67 of 2016). The amendment aims to strengthen state revenues and promote tax and social equity. Under the new legislation, both the minimum and maximum retail price thresholds for cigarettes will increase by 12% annually over three years, starting on 5 November 2025. The rate of increase may be adjusted downward based on changes in production costs. This measure is part of broader government efforts to expand the tax base and raise public revenues amid ongoing financial pressures. Specifically, the amendments raise the maximum retail price for local cigarettes sold for less than EGP 38.88 to EGP 48. Cigarettes priced between EGP 38.88 and EGP 56.44 will now fall within a new range of EGP 48 to EGP 69. For imported cigarette brands previously priced up to EGP 56.44, the cap will also be raised to EGP 69. These price thresholds are set to increase annually by 12% through 2028. In addition, the law introduces a significant change to the taxation of alcoholic beverages, shifting from a percentage-based system to a fixed-rate structure. Taxes will now be levied based on alcohol content, with an annual increase of 15% for three consecutive years..
