Malaysian author Tash Aw's new book The South is among 13 semifinalists announced on Tuesday for the Booker Prize. The list features writers from nine countries across four continents.
Raised in Malaysia and educated in England, Aw has won the Whitbread, Commonwealth and O. Henry Awards, with his work translated into over 20 languages.
'To call The South a coming-of-age novel nearly misses its expanse. This is a story about heritage, the Asian financial crisis, and the relationship between one family and the land,' noted the 2025 Booker Prize judges.
Aw, who has been a Booker Prize semifinalist twice before (with The Harmony Silk Factory and Five Star Billionaire ), will be the first Malaysian winner if he takes the £50,000 (RM283,000) prize for The South.
Indian author Kiran Desai, who won the Booker Prize and then didn't publish a novel for almost two decades, is also up for the award again with her long-awaited follow-up.
The Loneliness Of Sonia And Sunny, the 677-page tale of two young Indians making their way in the United States, is Desai's first novel since The Inheritance Of Loss, which won the Booker in 2006.

Two previous finalists are up for the prize again: British writer Andrew Miller, for The Land In Winter, and Hungarian-British writer David Szalay for Flesh.
Five of the contenders are from Britain: Miller, Szalay, Natasha Brown ( Universality ), Jonathan Buckley ( One Boat ) and Benjamin Wood ( Seascraper ).
Books by US writers in the running include Susan Choi's Flashlight, Katie Kitamura's Audition and Ben Markovits' The Rest Of Our Lives.
Also on the list are Misinterpretation by Albanian-American Ledia Xhoga, Love Forms by Trinidad's Claire Adam, and Endling , a debut novel by Canadian-Ukrainian opera librettist Maria Reva.
"The 13 longlisted novels bring the reader to Hungary, Albania, the north of England, Malaysia, Ukraine, Korea, London, New York, Trinidad and Greece, India and the West Country,' said Irish novelist Roddy Doyle, chair of a five-member judging panel that includes actor Sarah Jessica Parker.
"All, somehow, examine identity, individual or national, and all, I think, are gripping and excellent,' he said.
Founded in 1969, the Booker Prize has a reputation for transforming writers' careers and is open to novels from any country published in Britain and Ireland. Last year's winner was Orbital, by British writer Samantha Harvey.
A list of six finalists will be announced Sept 23, and this year's winner will be crowned on Nov 10 at a ceremony in London. - AP

Now playing in US, Canada cinemas: 73 minutes of cat videos, for a good cause

Now in its eighth year, Cat Video Fest is bigger than ever, with a global presence that's already extended to Britain and Denmark, and, for the first time, to France, Spain, Japan and Brazil. Photo: AP The best of the Internet's cat videos are showing at cinemas. Cat Video Fest is a 73-minute, G-rated selection of all things feline — silly, cuddly, sentimental and comedic — that's playing in more than 500 independent theatres in the United States and Canada. A portion of ticket proceeds benefit cat-focused charities, shelters and animal welfare organisation. Since 2019, it's raised over US$1mil. The videos are curated by Will Braden, the Seattle-based creator of the comedically existential shorts, Henri, le Chat Noir. His business cards read: 'I watch cat videos.' And it's not a joke or an exaggeration. Braden watches thousands of hours of Internet videos to make the annual compilation. 'I want to show how broad the idea of a cat video can be so there's animated things, music videos, little mini documentaries,' Braden said. 'It isn't all just, what I call, America's Funniest Home Cat Videos.' It's not all cats falling into a bathtub. That would get exhausting.' Now in its eighth year, Cat Video Fest is bigger than ever, with a global presence that's already extended to Britain and Denmark, and, for the first time, to France, Spain, Japan and Brazil. Last year, the screenings made over US$1mil at the box office. In the early days, it was a bit of a process trying to convince independent movie theatres to programme Cat Video Fest. But Braden, and indie distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories, have found that one year is all it takes to get past that hurdle. 'Everywhere that does it wants to do it again,' Braden said. The screenings attract all variety of audiences, from kids and cat ladies to hipsters and grandparents and everyone in between. 'It's one of the only things, maybe besides a Pixar movie or Taylor Swift concert, that just appeals to everybody,' Braden said. And the plan is to keep going. 'We're not going to run out of cat videos and we're not going to run out of people who want to see it,' Braden said. 'All I have to do is make sure that it's really funny and entertaining every year.' – AP

Jeju to host K-Culture Festival, offers fully-paid trip to three wheelchair-using M'sian BTS fans

KOTA KINABALU: Jeju Island will host a K-culture festival this September, with a special programme to recognise Malaysian fans of BTS. Organised by the Jeju Tourism Organisation (JTO), the event, called the 2025 Purple Festa in Jeju, will take place for two days beginning Sept 12. In a statement, JTO disclosed that the highlight is the 'Equal Sign Tour', which offers a fully paid trip to Jeju for three wheelchair-using BTS fans and their companions. This programme is open to Malaysian citizens, but they must be able to travel from Singapore. The organisers say this is a way to thank Malaysian fans for their strong support of BTS over the years. 'This festival is a meaningful attempt to provide a new fan tour experience. It is also the first step toward a future of sustainable tourism where the positive influence of fans can coexist beautifully with the local community,' the statement read. Malaysia's love for BTS is well-known, with even His Majesty the King expressing admiration for the group. The first day of the festival will be held at VEKE Garden, a K-pop themed venue, where activities include concerts, dance workshops, and fan art exhibitions. The second day focuses on K-dramas and takes place at the historic Jeju-mok Government Office. Visitors can enjoy tours, traditional games, and immersive drama experiences. All festival programmes are free, and shuttle buses will be available for easier transport. JTO added that they hope the event will boost tourism on the island and create a more inclusive and accessible travel experience for international fans. More information and the application form for the Equal Sign Tour can be found at

Malaysian Man Goes Viral For Being Credited In Marvel's 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps'

What could be better than seeing Malaysia mentioned or featured in a Marvel film? Having local talent involved in the production, of course! Whether on screen as an extra or behind the scenes, it's a point of pride to know that Malaysians are contributing to major Hollywood blockbusters. One such Malaysian has now been credited not for just one Marvel project, but several. In a post shared on Threads, 3D generalist Ahmad Hamidullah revealed that he was one of the many visual effects artists involved in the studio's upcoming film, 'The Fantastic Four: First Step'. 'Alhamdulillah. Another year, another Marvel movie. This time, I was credited in The Fantastic Four 🥳,' he wrote, sharing a screenshot of the end credits featuring his name alongside his team. Obviously, since the film was a huge success, Ahmad's post quickly went viral, with many expressing curiosity as to how he landed the job, what specific aspect of the film he worked on and how much he was paid for the project. The local artist explained that he works at the Kuala Lumpur branch of Base FX, a company specialising in visual effects, animation, high-end creature and character work, fluid simulations, and other dynamic effects. The company has contributed to several blockbuster hits, including 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' and the Oscar-nominated 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. When asked about his role in 'The Fantastic Four', Ahmad shared that he was responsible for texturing and primarily handled 3D assets for the film, specifically for characters and elements such as Moleman, Subterranea, a retro bus, and various underground scenes. For those curious about his salary, that's quite a sensitive topic, so you're going to have to ask him personally about the payment for these projects. As Ahmad mentioned that he had worked on several Marvel projects, many were curious to know which ones they were. While he did not specify in his original post, his IMDb profile reveals that he was part of the visual effects team for the 'Deadpool & Wolverine' film as well as the 'Ironheart' series. It's so amazing to have our local talent shine in international blockbuster hits. We hope that more Malaysians will receive the same opportunity to work on these projects or even star in them!
