SHAH ALAM, June 14 (Bernama) -- About 10,000 visitors are expected to enliven the Gawai Kitai Ngiling Bidai 2025 or Hari Gawai 2025 celebration to be held on June 28 at D'Network@ Setia Alam Lake here.
The chairman of the programme's organising committee, Michael Oridecth Dures, said that the Sarawak cultural celebration aims, among other things, to further introduce the uniqueness of the Dayak, Bidayuh, Iban, Hulu and other ethnic groups.
He said the programme, to be held for the first time in the Peninsula, was a collaboration between MOD Solutions Enterprise and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC).
'We welcome the public to participate in the Gawai Kitai Ngiling Bilai celebration, which is being held for the first time in the Peninsula.
"Let us together celebrate the diversity of cultures, especially those in Sarawak, which are among the pillars of the nation's strength," he said at a press conference for the Gawai Kitai Ngiling Bidai 2025 celebration in Setia Alam here today.
Michael said the Hari Gawai celebration is also one of the platforms to introduce the uniqueness of Sarawak to the local community as well as to tourists in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).
Meanwhile, he said this programme is among his team's efforts in supporting the Visit Selangor Year 2025, organised by the Selangor government.
'Among the interesting activities to be held are a cultural workshop and traditional Sarawak music including sapa, as well as the sale of various ethnic foods flown in from the Land of the Hornbills.
"Therefore, we invite and welcome everyone to come and experience the uniqueness, friendliness, and hospitality of the people of Sarawak, and take home valuable experiences," he added.

Etiquette training for cabbies in the works

KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry plans to provide basic language and driver etiquette training for taxi drivers ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), says Anthony Loke ( pic ). The Transport Minister said this is important because the taxi industry is more than just transportation as it represents the heartbeat of public service and serves as the first impression of the country for tourists. He added that the government has also extended the Social Security Organisation contribution incentive from 10% to 30% to safeguard the safety and welfare of taxi drivers. 'These reforms are ongoing, and I will continue to work with this industry to strengthen the public transport sector for the benefit of the people,' he posted on Facebook, Bernama reported. Earlier, Loke launched the third annual general meeting of the Malaysia Taxi, Rental Car, Limousine and Airport Taxi Association.

FBP 2025 Positions Balik Pulau As Cultural Tourism Hub

BALIK PULAU, July 27 (Bernama) -- The Balik Pulau Festival 2025 (FBP 2025) is positioning the area as a key cultural tourism destination in Penang, highlighting its rich arts, heritage and traditional cuisine beyond its famed durians. National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) deputy director-general (Policy and Planning) Mohd Radzi Omar said the festival, first introduced in 2019, also boosts Penang's economy by benefiting cultural entrepreneurs and art practitioners. 'This event showcases the diversity of Penang's cultural heritage and is crucial in sustaining the state's cultural tourism industry,' he told reporters at the festival's closing ceremony at Balik Pulau Sports Complex today. The ceremony was officiated by State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hong Wai and attended by Balik Pulau Member of Parliament Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik. Mohd Radzi said the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (MOTAC) approved RM1.38 million in cultural sector grants to 25 Penang cultural associations and companies last year, with RM490,000 approved so far this year to further boost activities. Ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, he said similar cultural festivals have been held in Perlis, Perak and Kelantan, with upcoming events planned in Kedah, Terengganu and other states. Wong said the festivals help promote Penang's cultural identity and provide economic spillovers, particularly for rural and suburban communities. Muhammad Bakhtiar expressed hope the event would be listed as an annual tourism calendar highlight. FBP 2025, themed Kembali Riuh di Lik Lau, was the second edition organised by MOTAC through JKKN in collaboration with the Balik Pulau MP's office and Warmina Penang Association.

Tun Ramli defies age with unstoppable energy at 84

GEORGE TOWN: At 84, many would choose to slow down, but Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib defies this norm, proving that age is truly just a number. Instead of retreating into a life of leisure, he remains an active, energetic, and forward-thinking figure, continuing to serve the people with the same zeal that has defined his career. In an exclusive interview with Bernama, Tun Ramli shared the secrets behind his vitality, even after stepping away from politics more than two decades ago. His formula? A blend of passion, discipline, and a love for adventure that has kept him physically fit and mentally sharp. After retiring from politics in 2008, Tun Ramli's life didn't slow down. He embraced his newfound freedom as an opportunity to explore new horizons. "I didn't fall into a lull after leaving politics. Instead, I turned to writing, and now I've authored four books," he shared with Bernama's editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj and Penang Bureau chief R. Ratcharathan at Seri Mutiara here recently. Writing, however, was just the beginning. His lifelong passions-mountain climbing and cycling-soon became his next adventures. Over the years, he has conquered several peaks, including Gunung Tahan in Pahang, Lenawee Mountain in Colorado, and mountains in Oman, Bhutan and Indonesia. Tun Ramli's legacy extends beyond politics. His written works include Pasir Salak: Sehamparan Sejarah Perjuangan, Meniti Zaman, Bangsa Melayu: Penjejak Benua and Tuan Yang di-Pertua: Daripada Seorang Budak Kampung Sehingga Menjadi Peneraju Parlimen. He's also contributed articles to Majalah Commonwealth and created travel brochures and dioramas for the Pasir Salak Historical Complex in Perak. Tun Ramli credits his longevity to a balanced routine that includes both mental and physical activities. "While I may not be as physically strong as I once was, staying active both mentally and physically keeps me youthful," he said. He regularly cycles around Penang, enjoying the island's beauty, while encouraging the younger generation to find balance in their own lives. "Work hard, but don't forget to live. Maintain both body and mind; if one falters, the other will too," he advised. Beyond his public life, Tun Ramli is a devoted family man. A proud grandfather of seven, he treasures every moment with his grandchildren. "In family matters, I'm all in. I'm close to my grandchildren, and I love spending time with them," he shared. His strong family values emphasise the importance of love and connection, despite his high-profile career. Married to Toh Puan Raja Noora Ashikin since 1973, Tun Ramli finds fulfilment in his family life, which has always been a source of joy and strength. – Bernama
