Woman Refuses to Give in to In-Laws' Demands to Ditch Her Own Family Tradition for Their Fourth of July Plans

Woman Refuses to Give in to In-Laws' Demands to Ditch Her Own Family Tradition for Their Fourth of July Plans

Yahoo2 days ago
A woman and her family have enjoyed the same Fourth of July vacation tradition for more than 20 years
Her in-laws recently began demanding that they split the holiday
But her husband insists his family never had Fourth of July traditions to begin withA woman is asking the Reddit community for support after her decision to stand firm on a cherished family tradition led to tension with her in-laws.
'My in-laws are mean, demanding, and entitled,' she begins her post. 'They have disregarded our parenting rules constantly, belittled me time and again, and gaslit us both repeatedly. I am in therapy.'
When she married her husband 13 years ago, his parents insisted on spending every holiday together as a big, happy family. Her own parents, however, wanted to alternate holidays, with the exception of their beloved family Hanukkah party. 'This is also what we wanted to do. So that's what we do,' she explains.
The Fourth of July, however, has always been different. She shares, 'My parents and I have been doing the same mini vacation every year on July 4th since I was a teenager.'
Her husband joined the tradition when they met. 'When we had the kids 6 years ago, they obviously came with us too. We look forward to it every year. The kids love it. I love it. He loves it,' she writes.
Recently, her in-laws have started demanding that the Fourth of July be split every other year. They now claim that they had special traditions with their son during that holiday, but her husband insists otherwise. 'He says that he was always at a friend's house,' she notes, casting doubt on her in-laws' sudden claim.
Adding to the complexity, her mother-in-law's birthday falls on July 14th. 'We have ANOTHER mini vacation every year with them for her birthday. And since July 4th weekend is 3 days, and her birthday weekend is only 2 days, we've also been going up for a SECOND weekend in August,' she explains.
She and her husband have tried to propose a compromise, suggesting that if they alternated the Fourth of July, they wouldn't also visit the following weekend for her birthday. 'We'd just celebrate it when we were up,' she says. However, "his parents got so angry that we would ever even consider that,' she shares.

Now, she finds herself at a crossroads, torn between maintaining a beloved tradition and appeasing her in-laws. 'I love my family's tradition for over 20 years. My husband has loved it for 13. My kids have loved it for their entire lives,' she writes.
Commenters are taking her side, with a little advice, too.
Writes one, "You and your husband need to work together with your therapist(s) to start laying down some hard boundaries for his parents and then enforce those boundaries. They sound like they make you miserable and they demand a lot of you. But here's the thing.... You guys are grown-ups and they don't get to make demands of you anymore. Neither of you has to put up with this."
Adds another, "It's time to tell your in-laws that your family is going to have its own traditions whether they like it or not. If they pitch a fit, be blunt and tell them that if they plan on being a part of your family they will honor this. Then be prepared to go [low-contact] with them."

City of Wilkes-Barre holds Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration

Jul. 5—WILKES-BARRE — The United States' 249th birthday was observed under the sun at Kirby Park on Friday with the city's Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration. Food and craft vendors, amusement rides, carnival games, musical performances, and an enormous firework display in the evening were open to the crowd, which came from a variety of areas to celebrate American independence in Wilkes-Barre. The United States Army Field Band performed a free concert on Tuesday, July 1, at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, and, earlier on July 4, the traditional Bernie's Run benefited the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA. At the free concert, veterans in the audience were saluted for their service. It's these kinds of community actions that Mayor George Brown considers when thinking about the Fourth of July. "Today, seeing everybody out and enjoying the beautiful day, knowing that today we're going to have great music, great vendors, and then, at the end, we're going to have a great fireworks display... That'll be the culmination of the Independence Day weekend...," Brown said. "I'm very proud to be an American." Brown, who noted that his father served during World War II in the South Pacific, was chatting with passersby throughout the afternoon, whether they were from the city or not. "What happens in Wilkes-Barre pulls in people from different townships," Brown said of the all-encompassing nature of the Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. David Harter, of Mountain Top, was one of the residents who came to Wilkes-Barre from elsewhere in Luzerne County. The main draw to Kirby Park was the music. "The groups," Harter answered when asked about why he chose to come to the Wilkes-Barre for the Fourth of July for the second year in a row. Triple Fret, Eddie Day & TNT, Fuzzy Park, and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic were on Friday's performing schedule. "The only suggestion that I would have is to put some shade trees out there," Harter added, pointing to a large sunny spot in the field in front of the Kirby Park stage. In addition to the musical performances, Harter was looking forward to the fireworks at night and the assortment of food options situated behind him. "I think after we're done listening, we're going to do a walk-through to check out the vendors," he said. Other celebrants came from even further away to experience Wilkes-Barre. Kenneth Jones, of New York, said he walked around Kirby Park and the River Common on Thursday night, and realized that Friday would be an exciting day for the community. That's why he was back for the holiday, keeping cool in the shade and watching over the Kirby Park pond. Jones said that most of his time in Northeast Pennsylvania has been spent in the Poconos, but is now realizing that Wilkes-Barre has a lot of history and nature to explore. In the context of the modern era, the admirable bonding displayed by the people in Kirby Center for the Fourth of July taps into some much-needed community-building. "We were just saying every community should have it," Jones said of the Fourth of July celebration. "It brings community together. Especially in the times we're living in now, we need all the community fun we can have while we can have it."

Why Taylor Swift Didn't Have Her Big Fourth of July Party This Year

THE RUNDOWN Taylor Swift is famous for her annual Fourth of July parties at her Watch Hill, Rhode Island beach home. She last threw a bash in 2023 and seemingly chose to take a second year off in 2025. No photos have come out of any festivities at the house or of her elsewhere, and Swift was off social media yesterday. It's unknown whether she had a private celebration somewhere different; the star was last spotted in Ohio with Travis Kelce earlier this week. In 2024, Swift didn't throw a party because she was on the European leg of her Eras Tour. Now, she's off work but enjoying a break from the public eye. Given her desire for privacy, her choice to forego the much-publicized celebration makes sense. On July 1, a source told People that Swift's downtime has been pivotal for her and her partner, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who is also currently in his offseason. The source explained, 'It's been a turning point for their relationship in a lot of ways. They're incredibly happy and in sync. There's a calmness and ease to their relationship right now that's been really grounding for Taylor and Travis.' 'Taylor and Travis are soaking up every minute of this slower season together,' the source added. 'They've been splitting their time between New York, Nashville, and a few quiet getaways, just enjoying each other's company without all the usual chaos. This kind of downtime is rare for both of them, and it's really allowed their bond to deepen." Swift celebrated Fourth of July with Selena Gomez and the Haim sisters in 2023, marking her first time hosting the event since 2016. At that point, she was just days away from playing her Eras Tour shows at Arrowhead Stadium, where she and Kelce would first connect. They started dating later that month. During her six-year break from the party, the singer told The Guardian in August 2019 that she stopped hosting the event due to her 'disillusionment' with America, a topic she also explored in her 2018 Lover track, 'Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince.'

Here's why Rob McElhenney changed his name

Actor Rob McElhenney has done some incredible things to make headlines over the years, including a weight gain for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and co-owning soccer team Wrexham with Ryan Reynolds. And now? He's changing his name. In a one-minute video he posted earlier in the week, he announced he's changing his name to ... Rob Mac. It'll be "mostly" a stage name, and, er, Mac explained that lots of people have had trouble pronouncing it or spelling it over the years. On top of that? The name has been changed over the decades. Here's more from the actor: 'Times have changed and most people already call me Rob Mac anyway. My family knows me and loves me regardless of how many syllables I have, and that's the only thing that I really care about. There are so many things going on in the world, and this is a silly one to continue to waste your time with. Honestly, call me whatever you want." Watch: How does Rob Mac's wife Kaitlin Olson feel about the name change? She said this according to People: 'I'm legally Olson McElhenney, but I go by Olson, so I don't really have to change anything,' she notes. 'We can call each other whatever we want. Whatever makes him happy, makes me happy.' But also, per People: "The kids are really not happy about it, because they have that last name," Olson said. "And so do I, legally!"
