Tom Mayes keen to prove his worth to Waringstown and Ireland after his injury nightmare

However, to add insult to injury, the side strain that limited his appearances to just seven saw Cricket Ireland decline to renew his retainer contract for 2025.
That has motivated the 24-year-old South African, who has an Irish passport through his paternal grandparents, to try even harder, and he has certainly hit the ground running with a century in the first game of the campaign and a six-wicket haul in the second, no doubt helped by a successful pre-season tour with Ireland Wolves.
'I've been working hard on my batting over the winter with a few coaches in South Africa and while I've not changed too much technically, it's more a question of confidence,' he explained.
'I've always had it in me and it's about time that I showed it. I was blessed to be on that Wolves tour, playing at that level with those coaches and facilities. It was good to put in some good performances there personally and it was a great confidence booster to take into the season here and hopefully stay in the selectors' minds.
'With Ireland having money issues this year, there were cuts to the number of players offered contracts. I missed out but there are chats, and if I can keep playing good cricket then that hopefully will take of itself.'
Now fully settled here and in a relationship with CSNI cricketer Abi Leckey, Mayes is keen to repay the faith Waringstown have in him.
'I'm very keen to add value to Waringstown who are one of the biggest clubs in Ireland. I want the team to have even more success as the season rolls on, and certainly want to play an integral part in that, hopefully bringing more trophies to the club.'
Waringstown suffered a blip in their title defence on Monday losing by 12 runs to CIYMS, but will be strong favourites to beat newly promoted Templepatrick, while the Belmont side entertain Muckamore on Saturday.
In the other games Instonians will be fancied to account for Woodvale, CSNI might find it tough against North Down, while table-toppers Lisburn will aim to make it four from four at the Castle Grounds
Meanwhile, in the North West, it's the opening round of the SportsHub Senior Cup where the seeded nature of the draw gives smaller clubs the chance to cause an upset or two.
Sion Mills, the competition's most successful team with 29 wins, are back after an 11-year absence from the event and they have been given a home draw against a Coleraine side that has started the season well, sitting in second place in the Premiership table.
Donemana start their quest to add to their 23 wins with a very tricky trip indeed down the Ballyheather Road to face neighbours Killyclooney.
Fresh in their minds will be a shock loss in the League last year which almost derailed their Premiership title.
Donemana though are a different beast with Irish international Andy McBrine in their ranks, and look to have acquired a quality overseas professional in Anuj Jotin.
Holders Newbuildings have lost both their League games to date and won't be relishing the prospect of taking on a fired-up Glendermott at The Rectory. The availability of West Indian international Peat Salmon though could well make the difference.
Bonds Glen will be without professional Divan Posthumus following the death of his father for their game at Ardmore, while Bready will be hoping to be back to full strength for the Tyrone derby at Fox Lodge.
In the other ties, Strabane entertain St Johnston, Ballyspallen take on Brigade and Eglinton have home advantage over Burndennett.

Nicole Kidman and Anna Wintour shine in star-studded Wimbledon final lineup

Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman and Vogue's Anna Wintour lead the stars in center stage in the royal box during Sunday's Wimbledon men's final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner Nicole Kidman and Vogue editor-in-chief Dame Anna Wintour lead the glamour in the royal box at Wimbledon's men's singles final on Sunday, capturing attention as they enjoyed the hotly anticipated match between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Oscar-winning actress Nicole, 58, looked as chic as ever as she modelled a crisp white blazer and shirt, with her new blonde locks styled to perfection. ‌ The actress was pictured smiling and laughing as she appeared to be in an engaged conversation with fashionista Wintour, 75, who stayed true to her iconic style with dark oversized sunglasses, a floral-embellished dress, and a bold green statement necklace. ‌ The exciting day of tennis attracted a whole host of other notable guests too, including Keira Knightley, who sat nearby Nicole and Anna alongside her husband, James Righton, who is best known as part of the Klaxons. Keira, 40, opted for a clean, belted white ensemble complemented by black sunglasses and a classic pearl necklace. Meanwhile, her husband looked suave as he matched her summer vibe in a cream double-breasted suit and tie. ‌ Seated next to the loved-up couple were Irish actors Andrew Scott, 48, and P aul Mescal, 29, who recently starred together in All of Us Strangers. Scott, famed for his roles in Fleabag and Ripley, wore a beige light suit paired with gold-rimmed sunglasses. Meanwhile, Normal People star Paul, who is also widely known for Gladiator II, added a splash of colour with a patterned tie over a white shirt and dark navy jacket. ‌ The famous friends appeared to be having a great time as they were pictured laughing together and chatting with Kiera as they watched the match between Alcaraz and Sinner. Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey also made an appearance at the Grand Finale at Wimbledon today as he was seen laughing while chatting to legend Andre Agassi as he walked into the Royal Box. ‌ The How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days star, 55, was all smiles as he lapped up the sunshine centre court while dressed in a suave white three-piece suit complete with a green patterned tie. Matthew was joined by acting royalty John Lithgow as he took his seat at the event. Among the royal attendees were Peep Show's Sophie Winkleman and her husband, Lord Frederick Windsor, the latter being a son of Prince Michael of Kent. ‌ Sophie, who is officially styled as Lady Frederick, looked elegant as she modelled a vibrant green sleeveless printed dress as they arrived for the day's matches. Elsewhere, Kensington Palace confirmed the Prince and Princess of Wales would also attend the final. ‌ Kate Middleton, 43, patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, received a standing ovation on Saturday when she presented the women's singles trophy to Iga Swiatek, highlighting her continuing support for the tournament. On Sunday, Kate looked gorgeous in a royal blue dress as she attended the Wimbledon final with her husband, Prince William and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Last year, Kate presented the Wimbledon men's final trophy to Alcaraz in her second public engagement since she announced her cancer diagnosis. ‌ And it was another scorcher today for attendees as temperatures climbed to 27°C in southwest London as excitement built for the match that would close out two weeks of thrilling tennis action. The royal box was full of excitement as it set the scene for a memorable finale between Spain's defending champion Alcaraz and Italy's world number one Sinner.

Conor Bradley scores first Liverpool goal since Jota death after perfect tribute

Conor Bradley fired home the opening goal of the game at Deepdale after Preston North End and Liverpool had come together to pay tribute to Diogo Jota Conor Bradley offered a muted reaction after scoring Liverpool's first goal since the death of the Northern Irishman's good friend Diogo Jota. Right-back Bradley was on hand to turn home from close range after good work from Rio Ngumoha and Federico Chiesa in the first half of the Reds' opening pre-season game of the campaign at Preston, where emotional tributes were paid to Jota before the match. ‌ After scoring Bradley then turned away and looked to the heavens, before turning to embrace the rest of his team-mates. ‌ Liverpool's players had gathered in the centre circle for a minute's silence prior to the match, while Preston had produced a special free matchday programme in honour of both Jota and his brother Andre, and performances of Preston anthem 'Can't Help Falling In Love' and Liverpool's 'You'll Never Walk Alone' were sang before the game. Bradley was one of Jota's closer friends within the Liverpool squad, and he attended the Cheltenham Festival alongside Jota, Scottish defender Andy Robertson and Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in March. Due to Jota's enjoyment of sports such as horse racing, Robertson, Kelleher and Bradley would often joke that he was more Scottish or Irish than Portuguese. Writing on Instagram after Jota's death, Bradley said: "Where do I start what an incredible footballer but an even better person I feel really lucky to have spent a few years with you. ‌ "Was always nice coming into the changing room in the morning and seeing you smiling and laughing and consistently calling me a hanger. "Always remember the first time you invited me to your room to play FIFA I think everyone knows where this is going, we was playing and by half time I'm pretty sure I was 5-0 down that was the last time I was ever falling into that trap. ‌ "When I first moved up from the academy you were always there for me and always helped me settle in with the lads which I'll be forever grateful for. "My thoughts are with your wife, children and family for losing both Diogo and Andre. I can't imagine how tough this is for you all, as I know how tough this feels for me today. Love you jots and I'm sure we will meet again." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Lions have set sights on whitewashing Wallabies

The Lions enter the first Test bolstered by an eight-try demolition of an AUNZ Invitational XV, with Andy Farrell scheduled to name his team for the Brisbane opener on Thursday. Farrell's tourists are strong favourites to win the series and Pollock, who is competing for a place on the bench at Suncorp Stadium, insisted they were aiming for greatness. Building! 📈#Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 12, 2025 'We want to come here and be the best Lions team ever. We've been talking about that loads and 3-0 is definitely on the table,' Pollock said. 'Whether you're playing or not playing in the Tests, we're all just trying to strive to be the best team we can and get that 3-0 win. If that's playing or not playing, then I'll adjust and be the best team-mate I can be.' Pollock – at 20-years-old, the youngest player in the squad – has been rooming with a veteran of four Lions expeditions in Owen Farrell, who made his first appearance of the tour off the bench against AUNZ. The England back row was just eight when Farrell's odyssey with the elite of British and Irish rugby began in Australia 12 years ago and he has been mining the veteran playmaker for advice. 'It was good to get chatting to him, learning from him. He's an amazing player and an amazing person as well,' Pollock said. 'We've had a few conversations. He's got kids, so we talk about his kids, but I'm sitting there going 'I'm still 20'! 'He's been great and I'm learning so much from him. He's so experienced in this game and in this kind of environment. 'It's still quite cool but at the same time, in this environment, we're all striving for the same thing. 'We want to come here and dominate as a team and he's been amazing since he's come in. He's been on top of everything. 'To be able to bring him off the bench and have his experience and his words has been amazing. You can definitely see what he brings on the pitch.' The Lions have come through a bruising schedule of four matches in 11 days and while they remain unbeaten since arriving in Australia, the injury count is growing with Tomos Williams and Elliot Daly forced home, Garry Ringrose and Luke Cowan-Dickie ruled out of the first Test and Blair Kinghorn a major doubt for the opener. Now the schedule settles down to whole weeks spent in the Test host cities Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, enabling the squad to train properly for the first time in a fortnight. All eyes on Brisbane! 👀🦁#Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 13, 2025 'You have to be mentally strong as well as physically strong. Your body is the reason you get picked and you have to stay fit,' said Pollock, who withdrew from the side that faced the New South Wales Waratahs because of a calf injury. 'With these short turnarounds, you learn a lot about what you can do and what you can't do in terms of gym, running and extras and making sure that on the pitch you're 100 per cent where you want to be. 'You're just trying to get as fit as you can for these games. With the short turnaround, it's just always trying to be available for the coaches and saying 'I'm fit, I'm fit'. It's something different and I've loved the experience.'
