Umno part of govt, will question members who joined opposition rally
He said the party would not tolerate behaviour that undermines the Madani coalition government, of which Umno is a part.
Allegations had surfaced that some Umno members took part in the Pas-led rally at Dataran Merdeka yesterday.
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan had earlier told Sinar Harian that the party would await a full report on the claims before taking any action.
"I want to see who attended the rally. My team and I will question them.
"What was their reason for attending?
"Umno's leadership has a clear stance—we do not support such gatherings. The party is now part of the Madani government.
"We must strengthen the unity government, not bring it down. Joining such a gathering is not a good move," Zahid told reporters after opening the Raub Umno division delegates' meeting at the Raub Silver Jubilee Hall today.
Yesterday, some 18,000 people attended the rally, which ended peacefully.
The event was organised to pressure the government over the rising cost of living and alleged institutional failures.

Malaysia in a shifting world order
COMMENT | The global geopolitical landscape is undergoing a seismic shift. For decades, American dominance economically, militarily, and diplomatically has defined the post–Cold War international order. Today, that dominance is increasingly challenged by emerging powers and shifting global alignments. The rise of competing powers, growing distrust of US intentions, and the resurgence of nationalist economic policies, particularly under Donald Trump's second term, are accelerating the fragmentation of global power. In place of a US-led unipolar order, a multipolar world is emerging, one increasingly defined by the rivalry between the United States, an emerging axis of Russia-China-India (RCI), and a recalibrated European Union. Trump's recent moves to impose tariffs on a wide swath of countries, including traditional allies like the European Union, Canada, South Korea, and India, mark a decisive...

BN eyes representation in all 25 Sabah MP seats
Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan MEMBAKUT: Barisan Nasional (BN) intends to contest at least one state seat in each parliamentary constituency in Sabah during the 17th state election, said its Deputy Chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Umno deputy president said the move is to ensure BN is represented in all 25 parliamentary constituencies in Sabah, which has a total of 73 state seats. However, Mohamad, who is also Foreign Minister and Rembau MP, said the proposal has not been finalised and will be discussed further with the BN component parties, namely Umno, MCA, MIC and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS). 'We do not want to see a recurrence of the situation in the last election, when some parliamentary constituencies lacked BN representation. 'This will lead to frustration and disillusionment among supporters, possibly causing them to leave the party,' he told reporters after launching the Kimanis Umno Division delegates meeting at Dewan Terbuka Membakut, here, Saturday. The current five-year term of the 16th State Assembly will expire automatically on Nov 11, paving the way for the 17th State Election. Meanwhile, Mohamad urged the people, particularly Umno members, not to be influenced by malicious allegations that the party had formed a coalition with DAP. 'BN, particularly Umno, has never merged with any party after the 15th General Election (GE15). Instead, BN only formed the current government with Pakatan Harapan (PH) based on an agreement with the coalition. 'Umno and BN agreed to form the Government because we needed to manage the country, as no party was able to form a government after GE15,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Syria's SDF and government trade blame over Manbij attack
MANBIJ: Syria's defence ministry and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have traded blame over an attack in the northern city of Manbij, straining relations after a landmark integration agreement signed in March. The defence ministry accused the SDF of launching a rocket barrage on an army outpost in the city's countryside, injuring four troops and three civilians, according to state news agency SANA. It called the attack 'irresponsible and without justification.' In response, the U.S.-backed SDF stated it was retaliating against 'an unprovoked artillery assault targeting civilian-populated areas with more than ten shells' from factions linked to the Syrian government. The SDF did not report any casualties. The March agreement aimed to unify Syria after 14 years of war, integrating Kurdish-led forces and regional governing bodies with Damascus. However, key details, such as how the SDF would merge with Syria's armed forces, remain unresolved. The SDF insists on joining as a bloc, while Damascus prefers individual integration. A Turkish defence ministry source recently urged the SDF to demonstrate compliance with the deal, as Ankara views the group as tied to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party. 'While we reaffirm our commitment to respecting the current de-escalation arrangements, we call on the relevant authorities in the Syrian government to take responsibility and bring the undisciplined factions under their control,' the SDF said. - Reuters
