PDRM deploy 6,200 personnel to secure ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Hussain said PDRM's readiness has been strengthened through a series of drills, including Ex Rimau ASEAN in February and Ex ASEAN organised by the National Security Council (MKN) from May 5 to 7.
'PDRM is fully prepared. The training covered VIP convoy escorts, riot control, handling explosive threats, and counter-terrorism response.
'Elite units such as the Special Action Unit (UTK) and 69 Commando are also on standby and ready to be deployed at any time,' he told Bernama today.
Although no threats have been detected so far, Razarudin said PDRM remains alert, taking into account incidents that have occurred at previous international summits.
He said PDRM is also monitoring political and security developments in ASEAN and partner countries to address any issues that may affect the summit's safety.
As part of a comprehensive security approach, PDRM is working with other agencies, including the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Civil Defence Force (APM), Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), and private security firms.
Razarudin added that besides the main venue at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, police contingents in states hosting side events, such as Terengganu, Penang and Langkawi, have also been instructed to increase their readiness.
'Foreign delegates usually visit tourist sites as well as attend meetings. So, PDRM will maintain a high level of security at popular tourist spots and public areas throughout the summit,' he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — Police have arrested a father and son in connection with a murder in Taman Pandan Perdana, Ampang, last month after post-mortem findings revealed signs of foul play. Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the case was initially treated as a sudden death after a call from a medical assistant at Hospital Kuala Lumpur at 7.16pm on June 22 reported a man's death at Jalan Perdana 6/5, according to the New Straits Times. Police confirmed the death at the scene, but a post-mortem at Ampang Hospital the following day uncovered necrotising soft tissue infections caused by skin and skeletal injuries. The victim's body was found in the home of one of the suspects, prompting the case to be reclassified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Police arrested two local men between June 26 and 28 — a 36-year-old self-employed man and his 73-year-old unemployed father. Investigators also seized a bamboo cane and an adjustable plier believed to be linked to the killing, Azam said. Both suspects tested negative for drugs and have no previous criminal records. The younger suspect has been remanded for 14 days from June 27 to July 10, while his father is remanded for 13 days from June 29 to July 11. Azam said the murder is believed to be related to a debt dispute. Those convicted under Section 302 face the death penalty or up to 40 years in prison with at least 12 strokes of the cane.

Not so ‘lucky customer' after all: Terengganu kindergarten teacher loses over RM108,000 after pawning jewellery in online job scam
KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — A kindergarten teacher lost RM108,703 — a sum that included proceeds from pawning her jewellery and borrowing from friends — after falling victim to a non-existent online job scam. The 32-year-old woman realised she had been scammed and lodged a police report at the Kuala Terengganu District Police Headquarters at 2pm yesterday, according to a report published by Kosmo! Online. Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor, said the incident began when the victim was contacted by the scammer on June 20, claiming she was a 'lucky customer' and entitled to win a prize. 'She received a parcel containing household items on June 28 and was then asked to provide feedback. 'The suspect also requested her e-wallet account number to deposit a so-called RM8 credit before assigning her tasks such as clicking on certain links that were claimed to lead to other rewards,' he said when contacted by Kosmo! today. Azli said that between July 1 and 3, the teacher made several transfers to the scammer, supposedly as part of the tasks and for penalties due to delays in completing them. He added that last Friday, the victim was instructed to transfer an additional RM75,000. 'In desperation, the victim sought urgent loans through two agents who provided links. She then made deposit payments into five different bank accounts, but the loan money was never disbursed,' he said.

Anwar says expecting record turnout for Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur
RIO DE JANEIRO, July 8 — The 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits, scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur this October, is set to be one of the largest in the grouping's history, said Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said several heads of government from outside Asean have confirmed their attendance at the summit, which will be held from Oct 26 to 28. Among those confirmed are Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whom Anwar met in Rome on July 3, and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Anwar also said that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently holds the G20 presidency, has also expressed his intention to attend. Anwar, who is in Rio de Janeiro for the 17th Brics Leaders' Summit, said newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has likewise confirmed his participation. 'This reflects how the October Asean Summit will likely be more vibrant than any previously held, not only involving Asean and regular partners such as Japan, South Korea, and China, but also many others. 'I believe it will be a major undertaking... God willing, we will be able to shoulder it together,' Anwar said during a press conference at the conclusion of his official visits to Italy, France and Brazil, which began on July 1. Currently, Asean's 10 member states are Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and the Philippines.
