Pink autos on wrong route? Men drive women-only vehicles, lug goods
CHENNAI: The state government's Pink Auto Scheme – launched with an eye on economically empowering women and enhancing the safety of woman passengers – seems to have at least partially failed in its objective, as many of these pink autos are now being driven by men.
Though the pink-coloured autos distributed under the scheme can be owned and driven only by women,

spotted them being driven by men in Ayanavaram, around Chennai Central railway station, Thiruvanmiyur, Royapettah, MMDA Arumbakkam and even near the secretariat over the past week.
At a couple of places, they were mainly used for transporting goods and not passengers which is also against the permit issued by the regional transport offices.

spoke to said they were driving these vehicles because they couldn't get a loan themselves to buy an auto. A couple of woman beneficiaries cited certain practical difficulties as the reason for them to let the men drive the autos.

in Thiruvanmiyur said he encouraged a female family member to apply for the scheme as he was ineligible for availing of a loan due to a poor CIBIL score and had been relying on driving autos owned by others, by paying huge rents.
A woman beneficiary from Ayanavaram said she was worried about paying her EMIs even after receiving a
. 'I couldn't operate the auto for many days due to family commitments and was worried about missing EMI payments. So, I asked a male friend to drive it and pay me a rent daily,' she said.
Another woman beneficiary from MMDA Arumbakkam said she was unable to drive for many hours like their male counterparts due to family commitments. 'I often do a few trips daily. During the idle time, my brother or cousin drives the vehicle,' she said.
Speaking to

, transport department officials acknowledged that there were complaints about these autos being driven by men or used for transporting goods. 'For the first permit violation, a penalty can be imposed. But, repeated offences could lead to permit cancellation,' said an official.
R Lilly, commissioner of the Social Welfare department, told
TNIE
the department has identified the autorickshaws operated by men. 'Starting tomorrow (Friday), we have decided to seize such vehicles. Despite repeated warnings and clear instructions, they (men) have continued to drive.'
The scheme was launched by Chief Minister M K Stalin on Women's Day on March 8.

CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday flagged off 120 low-floor electric, non-AC buses from the Vyasarpadi Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) depot. This marks the first time that e-buses have been introduced by a state-run transport undertaking (MTC) in Tamil Nadu. Each electric bus when fully recharged, which takes up to two hours, can be operated for 200 km. The floor height of the bus is 400mm, and it can be reduced up to 250mm. Following complaints of poor ventilation in the low-floor buses introduced last year, the MTC has increased the height of the window glass on either side of electric buses to enhance air circulation. It has also introduced a small sliding window for the high-floor seat in the rear.

Civic body floats tenders for already-built parking shed in Chennai?
CHENNAI: The city corporation has floated tenders allegedly for an already-constructed parking shed for battery-operated shuttle service vehicles at the Marina beach. The service was recently inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. As per the tender notice accessed by TNIE, tenders have been floated for the construction of a parking shed for two 11-seater battery-operated vehicles (BOVs) deployed on the Marina service road, at a cost of Rs 8.3 lakh. The tenders were floated on June 20 with the last date for submissions of applications fixed on June 23. The bids were scheduled to be reviewed on June 24. However, a field visit by TNIE showed the parking shed has already been constructed. As per sources, they were constructed at least 10 days ago. The construction of the shed even before the completion of the tender process raises concerns of allowing a contractor of the officials' choosing for the work. TNIE's visit to the spot also confirmed that the shed, created as a parking zone for the BOVs at Marina service road near to Marina swimming pool, fitted with turbine vents to remove heat, smoke, and humidity. The tenders were floated by the zonal level authorities of the Teynampet zone (zone 9) of the city corporation, undersigned by the Teynampet zonal officer and the zone's executive engineer, dated June 16. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, on June 11, flagged off the two BOVs from Ripon Building. These vehicles were intended to operate along the Marina stretch between Anna Square and the Lighthouse, offering better access for elderly and differently-abled visitors.
