Andrea Berta risking Arsenal backlash after Viktor Gyokeres transfer decision
Andrea Berta could face backlash behind the scenes at Arsenal if Viktor Gyokeres fails to deliver. Gyokeres, 27, was finally confirmed as an Arsenal player on Saturday after the club agreed to pay Sporting Lisbon a total of £63.7million.
The deal is comprised of a guaranteed £55million plus £8.7m in performance-related add-ons. Arsenal's capture of the Sweden international ends their long wait to sign a striker and the decision is without doubt Berta's biggest since taking over as sporting director in March.
Gyokeres' 97 goals in 102 games in two seasons with Sporting made him one of Europe's prolific strikers. But the Gunners' new No.14 wasn't the only candidate
RB Leipzig hotshot Benjamin Sesko was actually the preferred target for many involved in recruitment at Arsenal, according to the Telegraph. Five years younger than Gyokeres and with more experience in a top-five league, Sesko was seen an exciting option with potentially more upside.
Ultimately, the Gunners chose to pursue Gyokeres after Berta reportedly held talks with both players' representatives and, in a tactical ploy, made each of them feel as if they were the preferred option. Sesko, 22, was deemed to be more expensive, however, and coupled with Gyokeres' desire to join Arsenal, club chiefs went with the latter, who was always Berta's preferred pick.
It's now claimed in a separate report that the Slovenian is on Newcastle's radar while he's also been linked with Manchester United. Should Sesko move to the Premier League and thrive more than Gyokeres, Berta's decision could come under internal scrutiny.
Arsenal, though, are confident that the former Coventry City star will prove to be the right answer to their striker puzzle. Berta is 'so pleased' to have secured Gyokeres' signature and described the deal which he's brokered with Sporting as 'excellent'.
"Viktor is an exceptional talent and has consistently demonstrated he has the qualities and winning mentality required of a top-level centre-forward," the ex-Atletico Madrid transfer chief said in a statement.
"His physicality, intelligence and work ethic make him a perfect fit for our vision. We are confident Viktor will have a major impact on the pitch and become an important figure in our dressing room. Welcome, Viktor."

As for Mikel Arteta, the man tasked with getting the best out of Gyokeres, he added: "We're absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyokeres to the club. The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves.
"Viktor has so many qualities. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels. He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat.
"We're excited about what Viktor brings to our squad and are looking forward to start working with him. We welcome Viktor and his family to Arsenal."

Dream Team price confirmed for Viktor Gyokeres! Will Arsenal's new striker make your XI?
THIS is the one you've been waiting for. Following his transfer to Arsenal, Viktor Gyokeres has been added to Dream Team! 3 The 27-year-old is likely to be among the most popular players in the game come the Gameweek 1 deadline having shot to superstardom at Sporting CP over the last two years. Selecting Gyokeres from the off will cost you £6million of your initial £50million budget, a significant investment. For comparison, the only forwards who cost more at this stage are Erling Haaland (£7.5m), Mohamed Salah (£7.5m) and Alexander Isak (£6.5m), the cream of the crop. Gyokeres scored a whopping 54 goals in all competitions in 2024/25. 39 of those goals came in 33 league games as he fired Sporting CP to their 21st Portuguese title — no other player scored more than 18 goals in the top flight. 3 In total, the Sweden international scored 97 goals during his two years in Lisbon, a return that made him one of the most sought-after players in world football. Arsenal's acquisition of Gyokeres is a major statement of intent. Fans and pundits alike have stressed the Gunners' need for an out-and-out striker for the majority of Mikel Arteta's reign. Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have performed well in patches but neither are fully-fledged poachers known for their ruthless finishing. The North Londoners have been the Premier League's nearly men in recent times having finished as runners-up three years in a row. Might Gyokeres be the missing piece of the puzzle that propels Arsenal to top spot? 3 All that remains to be seen and besides, Dream Team bosses need only concern themselves with his point-scoring potential. Gyokeres is no stranger to English football having represented Brighton, Swansea and Coventry but he awaits his first taste of Premier League football. In fact, he is untested in Europe's top five leagues. This is seemingly the only question mark ahead of his Arsenal debut. Although Dream Team gaffers may remember he scored a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League last season, an achievement that surely stands him in good stead. Arteta's side are set to face Manchester United in what is arguably the standout fixture of the opening weekend before they welcome Leeds to the Emirates a week later. It will be interesting to see Gyokeres's ownership come the Gameweek 1 deadline.

Rude wash-bag message from boss helped inspire England to Euro glory
It was revenge for their 1-0 loss to the same side in the 2023 World Cup final, but required a campaign of crazy comebacks and must-win victories in every match following their opening loss to France. The England boss delivered a motivational message in the form of a toiletry bag (Peter Byrne/PA) 'Sarina had a certain little way of motivating us,' said Mead, after the Lionesses became the first English football team to secure a major trophy on foreign soil. 'It was great, it was funny, it was everything. She did it again tonight. 'She had a little toiletry bag that said b****** get s*** done, and b****** got s*** done today. That is it, drop the mic.' Mead's Arsenal team-mate Mariona Caldentey opened the scoring for Spain in the 25th minute, ensuring England would require a third consecutive comeback to make it back-to-back European titles and seal a third straight for Wiegman, who lifted the same trophy with the Netherlands in 2017. Alessia Russo nodded home Chloe Kelly's cross after the break to ultimately force a shootout, then sealed by substitute Kelly's emphatic top-corner spot kick. Aggie Beever-Jones had a memorable birthday (Nick Potts/PA) Kelly's winner was the best birthday present imaginable for major tournament debutant Aggie Beever-Jones, who turned 22 on Sunday and was serenaded by supporters who sang 'Happy Birthday' during the final. 'It's such an incredible tournament, back-to-back champions,' she said. 'The girls have done a brilliant job. I couldn't have had a better birthday than this. What a present! This will be the best day of my life. I can't quite believe it.' Mead added: 'It's what dreams are made of, Ags!'

William Saliba warns Premier League rivals over 'scary' Arsenal signing
Arsenal star William Saliba says Premier League defenders are in for a 'scary' ride next season following Viktor Gyokeres' arrival from Sporting. The Gunners officially announced that they had won the race for Gyokeres at the weekend, with the club agreeing a deal worth €63.5million (£54.8m) – plus €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons – with Portuguese champions Sporting. The prolific Swede became Arsenal's sixth signing of the window, following Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi and Cristhian Mosquera through the doors at the Emirates. Manchester United had also been pursuing an agreement for Gyokeres across the summer, but the 27-year-old attacker was intent on playing Champions League football next term – and made it clear he favoured a switch to north London. Gyokeres joined up with his new team-mates in Singapore on Sunday and was formally introduced to the crowd before Arsenal's pre-season victory over Newcastle. While there is a chance Gyokeres could make his debut in Arsenal's upcoming friendly with arch-rivals Tottenham on Thursday, Mikel Arteta has hinted fans may have to be a little more patient to see the forward in action for the first time. 'We know how good he is, it's scary to play against him,' Arsenal defender Saliba told Hayters TV when asked about Gyokeres following the side's 3-2 defeat of Newcastle. 'Of course, I'm so happy to have him in my club, and I'm sure that he will help us to win games and win trophies.' Asked what exactly makes Gyokeres a 'scary' prospect for opposition defenders, Saliba replied: 'Because when you face a striker who scores goals, you have to be focused! 'But now he's in our team and he will score for us, so that's good.' Saliba believes Arsenal's hierarchy have signalled their intent with the quality they have brought in during the transfer window. 'Our mindset is to win the Premier League and we will give everything from the first game,' the France centre-back added. 'We have a lot of new players and they will hopefully help us to win this league.' Arsenal's wonderkid Max Dowman stole the show with an magnificent cameo performance off the bench against Newcastle, drawing a foul from Joelinton to win Martin Odegaard's late penalty. Fellow Hale End academy graduate Marli Salmon was also given playing time in Singapore, coming off the bench for Saliba in the 77th minute of the contest. 'They are unbelievable. Of course, they are young, we mustn't put pressure on them, but to play the way they play at 15!' Saliba said of the two 15-year-old talents. 'I remember when I was 15, I was not playing with the first-team. I was with the U17s, so it's good. 'We have to protect them and give them support, but of course, they are really, really good players, and I hope they will help us as soon as possible. Saliba hopes Arsenal continue to build on their 'positive' showings in Asia heading into the new season More Trending 'There are a lot of positive things. We played two games; we won two games,' he said of the wins over AC Milan and Newcastle. 'There are also a lot of things to improve, but of course we have to keep going like that. 'We have three games left before the Premier League, so we have to keep going and keep winning games. 'Pressure is good, that means we are in a good place. If we are not good we don't have pressure. We play football to have pressure.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
