White Sox promote SS Colson Montgomery to make MLB debut
Montgomery will be making his major league debut. He will bat seventh and play shortstop against the Rockies.
The 23-year-old received the news of his promotion from Charlotte manager Sergio Santos on Thursday night.
Santos was giving details about a trip that included an overnight bus ride to Jacksonville for a game on Friday. Then he dropped the surprise on Montgomery.
"Unfortunately, you won't be playing shortstop for us tomorrow," said Santos, with a well-timed pause during a video. "You'll be playing shortstop for the Chicago White Sox."
Montgomery was then overwhelmed with emotions.
Montgomery was a first-round pick of the White Sox in 2021 (22nd overall). He is rated the White Sox's No. 5 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.
He has 11 homers and 30 RBIs in 55 games for Charlotte this season but batted just .218 and struck out 82 times.
Chicago designated third baseman Vinny Capra for assignment to open up a 40-man roster spot for Montgomery.
Capra, 28, hit .190 with two RBIs in 23 games with the White Sox after being claimed off waivers on May 15. He was with Milwaukee earlier this season and batted .074 with one homer and four RBIs in 24 games with the Brewers.
The White Sox also activated left-hander Fraser Ellard (lat) from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Charlotte. Ellard, 27, had a 6.75 ERA in seven appearances for Chicago earlier this season.

Trevor Rogers, Jackson Holliday lift Orioles over skidding Braves
July 6 - Trevor Rogers pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and Jackson Holliday homered to help the visiting Baltimore Orioles beat the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Sunday to sweep their three-game series. It was the third straight win for the Orioles, who swept a series against Atlanta for the first time since 2015 and in Atlanta for the first time since 1999. It was Baltimore's fourth sweep of the season. The Braves have lost four in a row and dropped nine of their last 11. Atlanta fell to 11 games under .500. Rogers (2-0), who entered the game with a 0-7 career record against the Braves, allowed only four hits and two walks and struck out a season-high six. It was the third scoreless stint in five starts for Rogers, who lowered his ERA to 1.57. Baltimore reliever Seranthony Dominguez allowed a solo homer to Sean Murphy, his 13th, and a single to Ozzie Albies with one out in the ninth inning. Dominguez fanned Drake Baldwin and retired Michael Harris II on a grounder to earn his second save. Holliday went 4-for-4, the second four-hit game of his career, with a double and a home run. He supplied all the offense via a two-run homer in the third inning that just cleared the 16-foot brick wall in right field. It was his 11th of the season. Atlanta starter Grant Holmes (4-8) pitched six innings and allowed two runs on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Holmes was helped by the Braves' defense, which turned three double plays behind him. The Orioles placed Gary Sanchez on the injured list with a right knee strain, giving the team four catchers on the IL. They acquired Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees to serve as the backup. Jackson was batting .226 with 10 homers in 44 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Orioles went 4-2 on their road trip and return home to start a three-game series against the New York Mets on Tuesday. The Braves went 2-7 on their homestand and begin a three-game series against the host Athletics on Tuesday. --Field Level Media

'New energy' from Delap, Gittens and Joao Pedro
Marc Cucurella says Chelsea newcomers - including Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap - have "a lot of quality" and hopes they can bring "fresh energy". The 26-year-old is one of the oldest players in Chelsea's squad and has emerged as one of their leaders. He was speaking after Gittens became their latest signing - joining from Borussia Dortmund in a £48.5m move, taking their total spend this summer to about £170m. Asked about what the new signings have added, Cucurella said: "I think this is good for Chelsea because we have new players with a lot of quality."They joined a club where we try to win every game. Hopefully, they bring good energy, the quality we know and we try to stay with them."I think it's early for them but hopefully they can bring fresh energy and a lot of quality."Chelsea beat Palmeiras 2-1 to reach the semi-finals of the Club World Cup, where they will face another Brazilian team - Fluminense - at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey. Palmeiras' goal was scored by 18-year-old attacker Estevao Willian, who is joining the Blues after a £52m move. "I think he's a good player with a lot of talent," said Cucurella. "We want to help him. We try to help him in all the things that we can."Cucurella has admitted regular signings and sales have previously made things tricky at Stamford Bridge."At the beginning, it was difficult because football is a lot of relationships," he said. "You stay close with one team-mate and then he leaves or you leave. "It's difficult, but I think we have a good group now. I think we have been together for a long time. The most important thing is that as a new player, you feel OK."You have confidence and you can show your personality in everything. If you feel this from the beginning, it's more easy to reach."Should Chelsea beat Fluminense they will face either Paris St-Germain or Real Madrid in the Club World Cup final."For all of us, it is very important," said Cucurella. "At this moment, we do not think about the fatigue. If we are tired, we want to enjoy this moment."It is a good opportunity to do something important, to be proud of our work and to play for Chelsea."

Guardians place OF Lane Thomas (foot) on injured list
July 6 - Cleveland Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas returned to the 10-day injured list on Sunday because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot. The move, retroactive to Saturday, came after Thomas exited the 2-1 home loss to the Detroit Tigers after five innings on Friday and sat out the 1-0 setback to the Tigers the following day due to the injury. The Guardians have lost nine consecutive games. In a corresponding move, the Guardians recalled rookie infielder Will Wilson from Triple-A Columbus. Wilson, who turns 27 on July 21, batted .176 (9-for-51) in 24 games after making his major league debut in April. He hit .308 with eight home runs and 24 RBIs in 36 games with Columbus. Thomas, 29, also was on the IL for the same ailment from May 30 to June 9. He went on the list in April because of a bruised right wrist. Thomas injured his wrist when he was hit by a Shane Smith pitch in the fifth inning of the Guardians' home opener on April 8 against the Chicago White Sox. Thomas is batting .160 (20-for-125) with four home runs and 11 RBIs in 39 games this season. He is a career .242 hitter with 76 homers and 254 home runs in 600 regular-season games for the St. Louis Cardinals (2019-21), Washington Nationals (2021-24) and Guardians. Thomas hit two homers and drove in nine runs while batting .222 (8-for-36) in 10 postseason games with Cleveland in 2024. --Field Level Media
