Penn State's Abdul Carter, potential No. 1 NFL pick, has stress fracture in foot
Carter, who could potentially be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, has two options: have preemptive surgery, which would involve having a screw put in his foot (roughly an eight-week recovery), or put off surgery, according to ESPN.
Carter's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said that he "couldn't be more confident" that the stress fracture will be a "non-factor" in where the 21-year-old star lands in the draft. Furthermore, Carter doesn't feel any pain and will refrain from having surgery, according to NFL Media.
This injury news comes on the heels of Carter suffering a shoulder injury late in the 2024 college football season. He's not working out for teams at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this week but expects to be ready for Penn State's pro day on March 28.
Carter totaled 12.0 sacks, a Big Ten-high 24 tackles for loss, four passes defended and 68 combined tackles last season, helping him earn Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors. PSU reached the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Carter, an All-American, being selected in the top three is likely dependent on how desperate the Tennessee Titans (No. 1), Cleveland Browns (No. 2) and New York Giants (No. 3) are for a new quarterback, as all three teams have murky futures at the position. Colorado's Shedeur Sanders and Miami's Cam Ward, a Heisman finalist, could be the first two quarterbacks taken.
Carter is in competition with Colorado two-way superstar and 2024 Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter to be the first non-quarterback off the board.

Grand Canyon University's move to the Mountain West has been accelerated. Lopes to compete this fall
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Grand Canyon University announced Tuesday its move to the Mountain West Conference will begin immediately. The school in Phoenix was initially scheduled to transition from the Western Athletic Conference to its new league on July 1, 2026. The Mountain West offered an earlier transition, however, allowing the school to compete for conference championships this fall. 'The addition of Grand Canyon for the 2025-26 academic year is a significant win for the student-athletes at GCU and in the Mountain West,' conference commissioner Gloria Nevarez said in a statement. Grand Canyon will be one of 14 schools competing in the conference next season. The accelerated transition comes after five Mountain West schools announced they intend to depart the conference and join the Pac-12 in 2026. Those schools are Utah State, Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Colorado State. 'Grand Canyon brings elite recruiting, a passionate fanbase, and state-of-the-art facilities, elevating the Mountain West's competitiveness and national profile,' Nevarez said. 'In a time when the student-athlete experience is of utmost importance, we felt it was in the best interest to allow them to compete for conference championships and the NCAA postseason immediately.' Seventeen varsity teams will compete in the Mountain West, including men's and women's basketball which have been in the national spotlight in recent years during the NCAA Tournament. Grand Canyon's historically successful men's volleyball team was cut in April. 'GCU is excited for this opportunity for our student-athletes, the Havocs and our fanbase,' GCU athletic director Jamie Boggs said. Big 12 commissioner doubles down on preference for 5-11 playoff model if CFP expands
FRISCO, Texas — Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark is doubling down on his preference to stay with only five automatic qualifiers if the College Football Playoff does expand from 12 to 16 teams as many expect after this season, instead of each of the four power conferences being guaranteed multiple bids. 'We have the responsibility to do what's right for college football ... not what's right for one or two or more conferences,' Yormark said Tuesday at Big 12 football media days. 'I think 5-11 is fair. Earn it on the field, assuming we want to expand. I love the current format, but if we're going to expand, let's do it in a way that's fair and equitable and gives everyone a chance.' While the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten will have more of a say on the playoff format starting in 2026, when ESPN's $7.8 billion contract kicks in, Yormark believes the 5-11 format would be good for now and in the future. He said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips feels the same way, and is expected to express that during his league's media days in two weeks. 'We do not need a professional model because we are not the NFL,' Yormark said. 'We are college football and we must act like it.' In the 12-team format still in place for this season, the five highest-ranked conference champions are guaranteed spots in the playoff. The difference this year is that the top four highest-ranked champions are no longer guaranteed the top four seeds that come with first-round byes. Among potential 16-team formats would be four automatic qualifiers from both the SEC and Big Ten, and two each for the Big 12 and ACC. The Big 12 last season had only conference champion Arizona State make the playoff last season. 'We want to earn it on the field,' Yormark said. 'It might not be the best solution today for the Big 12, given your comments about (automatic qualifiers), but long term, knowing the progress we're making, the investments we're making, it's the right format for us.' Yormark, who is going into his fourth year as Big 12 commissioner, believes that the landmark NCAA House settlement will have a positive impact for all conferences, especially if the College Sports Commission works the way it is intended in enforcing the rules in the remade system. 'It will. I have a lot of faith in Bryan Seely,' Yormark said of the former Major League Baseball executive named CEO of the new CSC. 'It should create a level playing field, and I'm not giving that up.' The Big 12 was already in transition and still at 10 teams when Yormark arrived in 2022. BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF joined the league the following year. Texas and Oklahoma, who won football national championships while in the Big 12, completed their long-planned move to the SEC last year. That is when Pac-12 schools Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah came into what is now a 16-team Big 12. 'I think parity matters, and I think ultimately over time, and that's hopefully sooner than later, there'll be a couple of our schools that will emerge, you know, as elite schools that are always part of the conversations at the highest levels. And that's what we're working towards,' Yormark said. 'But it starts with parity and being competitive top to bottom. And I think we're there.'

Avalanche add former Kraken head coach Dave Hakstol as assistant to boost power play
DENVER — The Colorado Avalanche added former Seattle head coach Dave Hakstol to their staff Tuesday as an assistant to boost a power-play unit that struggled in the postseason. Hakstol joins an Avalanche staff under coach Jared Bednar that includes Nolan Pratt, goaltending coach Jussi Parkkila and assistant/video coach Brett Heimlich. The 56-year-old Hakstol will direct a power play that features Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar but scuffled against Dallas in the first round of the playoffs. The team was 3 of 22 on the man advantage in a series that went seven games. Colorado also allowed seven goals in the Stars series while short-handed. After the season, the team parted ways with assistant coach Ray Bennett, who was in charge of the power play. Hakstol served as the first head coach in Kraken history and was in charge from 2021-24. His team made the postseason in 2023 and eliminated the Avalanche in the first round of a series that went seven games. He finished 107-112-27 with Seattle. 'Dave brings a wealth of knowledge and experience behind the bench and will be a great fit on Jared's staff,' Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said in a statement. 'He has an extensive coaching background with a lot of success and will be a valuable addition to our team.' Hakstol also was the head coach in Philadelphia for parts of four seasons and went 134-101-42. Before the NHL, Hakstol spent 11 seasons as the head coach at the University of North Dakota, leading the team to seven Frozen Four appearances. In international competitions, he won a pair of silver medals as an assistant coach with Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship in 2017 and 2019. The 2017 squad featured MacKinnon and the 2019 team had Avalanche goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. 'This is a proud organization with a lot of talented players,' Hakstol said.
