Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham made headlines by denigrating the cities of Detroit and Cleveland when discussing the WNBA's expansion in the coming years.

On Monday, the WNBA announced that the league would be expanding to 18 teams, with new franchises coming to Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia.
Cunningham then stuck her foot in her mouth, inadvertently or not, by questioning whether players would be interested in playing (and living) in Detroit.
Within the broader context of Cunningham's conversation with the media, she was attempting to highlight other cities that players would have been interested in, such as Miami or Nashville. But in lifting up those cities, the 28-year-old stirred controversy by criticizing the expansion cities.
In response to the public pushback that followed Cunningham's comments, former WNBA star Lisa Leslie left a comment on an Instagram story, sharing her frustrations.

"Uggghhhh! I need to call a meeting with all the players of the @wnba" said the two-time WNBA champion who is a panelist on the CBS Sports show "We Need To Talk."
Leslie's comment received over 1,100 likes and more than 65 replies.
Cunningham has been thrust into the spotlight in recent weeks because of her actions in defending Caitlin Clark during a game against the Connecticut Sun on June 17.

Clark was poked in the eye by Connecticut guard Jacy Sheldon, and later, Cunningham delivered a hard foul to Sheldon, which led to a verbal altercation between the two teams.
With all the attention surrounding Clark, many Fever fans have rallied around Cunningham since then.

However, Leslie and others might suggest that Cunningham receive more media training, as her comments were lambasted by the Detroit Free Press, Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and many others.

Fever Star Sophie Cunningham Celebrated For 'Incredible' Gesture

Fever Star Sophie Cunningham Celebrated For 'Incredible' Gesture originally appeared on The Spun. Sophie Cunningham has dealt with some criticism during her first season with the Indiana Fever. On Friday, however, all she received was praise. Advertisement Earlier this week, Cunningham made headlines when she was asked about the WNBA's expansion plans. She questioned if people would be excited to play for Cleveland or Detroit. Obviously, that remark didn't sit well with people from those two cities. After a day of nonstop criticism, she retracted her initial comments. "Yeah, OK. First of all, I know the history behind the WNBA. I know that both of those cities have had teams before, and they got us where we're at. So I'm thankful for that," Cunningham said. "All I was really getting at is like — Broadway, the off-court lifestyle, and so I think that is really intriguing. I think Miami is intriguing. That's all I was getting at." Luckily for Cunningham, she won't have to apologize for her latest act. After warming up for roughly 30 minutes, she fulfilled that promise. Advertisement "I've had the pleasure of meeting many celebrities , athletes etc. but nothing tops this brief moment with my daughter and @sophie_cham," Howze wrote on Instagram. "Sophie promised my daughter that she would sign her jersey. After warming up for 30-40 min and being pulled into so many directions, she remembered that she gave her word to this little girl, kept her promise and made a B line straight for her. Thank you for this moment Sophie." Howze shared a video of this heartwarming interaction for everyone to see. Countless fans praised Cunningham for this classy gesture. "This is amazing I love it," one person commented. Advertisement "Yet another amazing reason to love Sophie Cunningham," a second person wrote. "That's how you build a league," a third person said. For the most part, Cunningham has enjoyed a really good week - on and off the court. During the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final, she scored 13 points in a 74-59 victory over the Minnesota Lynx. Cunningham will return to the hardwood on Saturday night when the Indiana Fever take on the Los Angeles Sparks. Michael Vick shows Norfolk State coaches he still has the arm

When the football season unfolds at Norfolk State University this fall, Michael Vick won't be taking any snaps at quarterback. But that's not stopping the former NFL All-Pro QB from showing the staff at Norfolk State that he still has an elite arm at 45 years old. Vick posted to Instagram a throwing contest between himself and Demarcus McMillan, the Director of Football Operations for Norfolk State. The two were throwing at a football net set up with three unique targets at the back of the endzone. Throwing from roughly the ten-yard line, hitting the target made it a 20-yard challenge. Stepping up in the 'pocket' Vick threw a perfect laser right into the upper right target of the net. A perfect strike. Vick seemed to offer McMillan the chance to hit any part of the net to stay alive in the game. As you can see in the Instagram video above, McMillan knew he was off target as soon as the ball left his hands. McMillan, brings a unique blend of discipline and leadership to the Norfolk State program. A decorated military veteran with over 22 years of service, McMillan transitioned into athletics through youth football and operations roles. Vick repeated his accuracy a second time zipping the ball through the same target once again. This isn't the first time that McMillan has stepped on the field with some friendly competition amongst the staff. Back in June McMillan lined up at defensive back to try and shut down boxing champion Terence Crawford with Michael Vick throwing passes. It didn't work. On one route Crawford was jammed at the line, but broke free to catch a perfectly placed over-the-shoulder pass from Vick. Crawford also ran a quick slant to the outside that left McMillan tumbling across the field at Dick Price Stadium. But it was all in fun as the two laughed and slapped hands after each pass, as a small group of Norfolk State staffers laughed in the background. Caitlin Clark Injury Update Has WNBA Fans Deeply Worried

Caitlin Clark Injury Update Has WNBA Fans Deeply Worried originally appeared on The Spun. The Indiana Fever are slowly but surely getting used to life without Caitlin Clark. Earlier this season, Clark missed a few games due to a quad injury. She returned to the hardwood on June 14 and reminded the world why she's a generational talent, scoring 32 points in a win over the New York Liberty. A few games later however, she went down with a groin strain. Advertisement Clark last played for the Fever on June 24 against the Seattle Storm. They've gone 3-1 in the last four games without her, which gives the coaching staff reason to be patient with their All-Star guard. "My goal has always been the same: I don't want this to be something that lingers, that we come back too soon," Fever coach Stephanie White told reporters this week. "We want to make sure that she is 100% ready to go and that we put her long-term health and wellness at the forefront." Unfortunately for WNBA fans, Clark will miss her fifth consecutive game on Saturday when the Fever take on the Los Angeles Sparks. Her status was officially announced on Friday afternoon. (Photo by Jeff Haynes/NBAE via Getty Images)After learning that Clark will miss Saturday's game, WNBA fans expressed their concerns online. Many of them believe the former No. 1 pick's groin injury is far more serious than initially expected. Advertisement "This is actually getting annoying. Like they were never honest of the severity of the injury we all knew it was going to be weeks but they said it was day to day," one fan said in response to Clark's status. "Like a stab through my heart every time," a second fan wrote on X. "Nah this is crazy what is wrong with that groin dawg," another fan said. "This injury serious man they tried hiding it too long and having her play when they knew she wasn't 100%," a Fever fan commented. Maybe the Fever are giving Clark a few more days off before their game on July 9. If Clark is unable to suit up for next Wednesday's game, it might be time to sound the alarm.
