Euro 2025 call-up 'a dream come true' for Lincoln woman

BBC News13 hours ago
A footballer said it was "a dream come true" to have been selected to play for Wales at the Women's Euro 2025. Olivia Clark, 23, will play in goal in the team's first major tournament. Wales' first game is on Saturday against The Netherlands. Clark, from Lincoln, said: "When you're a young girl kicking the ball around a garden, this is something you dream of."
Clark started playing football at primary school, initially for the boys team. She said: "I thought, if I want to play football, that's the only way I'm going to play, and I actually loved it. "If you ask a lot of girls now that are playing at my age, we all used to play with the boys and I think it gave us a good introduction to football."Clark then joined the Lincoln Centre of Excellence and played for age groups from the under 10s to the under 15s. She went on to play for a number of teams including Nettleham Ladies FC, and Bristol City Women. She is currently the goalkeeper for Leicester City Women.
Ms Clark was 16 when she attended trials for Wales after spotting an advertisement on social media."My mum's side of the family are Welsh so I always knew I could play for Wales. I just didn't know how to get into it," she said."If I didn't open Twitter that day, I might not be going to the Euros."
Ms Clark made her senior debut for Wales in 2021, and was in goal on the night Wales secured their spot at Euro 2025.Alan Clark, Olivia's father, said: "I don't think you could get any prouder at all. "I thought I was proud before, but that game in Dublin when they actually achieved qualification - she said it was the best day of her life and it wasn't far off the best day of my life."
Reflecting on the tournament ahead of her, Ms Clark said: "It's really easy to get carried away with the moment."I want to remember enjoying it, not thinking I'm so nervous and doubting myself. I don't want that to happen. "It's a massive personal achievement, but also a massive achievement for the country, and one I'm really excited for."

Heat wilts players but not fans' spirit at Sweden-Denmark Euros clash

GENEVA, Switzerland, July 4 (Reuters) - Despite the early evening sun blasting down on the Stade de Geneve on Friday, the enthusiasm of fans did not wilt in the heat during Sweden's 1-0 victory over Denmark in the Women's European Championship. Midfielder Filippa Angeldahl scored for Sweden in a third straight game, securing the win in the opening game of Group C. The so-called "soft-hooligans" of Sweden lived up to their name with emphatic chants throughout the match and even one ABBA-inspired sing-along. "Having the crowd, it means so much, like you could hear them all through the game, like having our backs, pushing us through," Sweden defender Linda Sembrandt told Reuters. Swedish fans brimmed with confidence from the start of the match, putting up a bright yellow display reading: "The gold is coming home". "When you come out on the pitch and see everyone... you can't describe how important that is," said Swedish forward Madelen Janogy. Danish fans tried their best to reply with bellowing drums and "Danmark" chants to fire up their side but the Danish "Roligans" could not quite compete with their Scandinavian rivals who dominated the stadium with their anthems. Temperatures peaked at 30 degrees Celsius, which players said had an impact on their performance. "It was really hot. It's hard to prepare for it, like we have training in it, but it was really hot today. A few people got cramps," Sembrandt said. The game was stopped on a number of occasions for players to refresh with drinks. "It was a lot of stops. We had a cooling break because it's hot, and that's what the referee wanted... That's just something you have to deal with. You sometimes have to be a little more smarter the way you play," Denmark's Janni Thomsen told Reuters.

Unsatisfactory scope scuppers Giavellotto's Newmarket defence

Marco Botti's stable star was a decisive winner of the Group Two feature on the opening day of the July Festival last season and rounded off his campaign with top-level success in the Hong Kong Vase. Having finished a creditable third in last month's Coronation Cup at Epsom, Giavellotto was being readied to defend his crown on the July Course before being scratched on Friday morning. Explaining his absence, Botti said: 'We scoped this morning, he had a few coughs and we weren't happy with the scope. Tomorrow (Saturday) he was meant to be doing a piece of work and we felt he wasn't going to be 100 per cent. 'It's disappointing because this race has been in my mind for a long time and there's not many left in the race, but on the other hand the horse's welfare comes first and if we feel he's not going to be 100 per cent, there is no point in going to the races. 'These things normally just take a few days and then they are OK and it's just unfortunate that we're so close to the race and were meant to gallop the horse tomorrow. We just felt it's not the right thing for the horse to gallop with a little bit of infection, but I'm sure it will clear up soon.' Botti is unsure where Giavellotto will make his next appearance, with a return to Sha Tin in early December top of his agenda. The trainer added: 'We have made an entry in a Group One in Germany in August and long-term we would obviously like to run him in Hong Kong, so we'll work backwards from that. 'As the season goes on into the autumn another thing we have to bear in mind is the ground, because he doesn't want it soft. 'He has an entry in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, but we made that entry a long time ago and I would say at this stage it's not a race we'll probably go for. All the other options will be considered and Hong Kong would be the priority basically.' A small field is guaranteed for the Princess of Wales's Stakes, with Charlie Appleby leaving in Arabian Crown and El Cordobes and John and Thady Gosden confirming both Military Academy and Palladium. The other contenders are James Owen's Wimbledon Hawkeye and the Clive Cox-trained Ghostwriter, who was last seen finishing third behind Godolphin's globetrotting star Rebel's Romance in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot. Six entries have been made for the Group Three Bahrain Trophy, including Aidan O'Brien's pair of Galveston and Scandinavia, with the former of particular interest after finishing third in the King Edward VII Stakes at the Royal meeting. Andrew Balding's Furthur, who came even closer to Ascot success with a close-up second in the Queen's Vase, also features. Nine juveniles are in the mix for what looks a strong renewal of Kingdom of Bahrain July Stakes. Appleby could saddle Norfolk runner-up Wise Approach and the unbeaten Maximized, while Ed Walker's Do Or Do Not also brings strong form the table having finished second in the Coventry Stakes. O'Brien's sole representative is Curragh maiden winner Brussels, with Eve Johnson Houghton's Salisbury scorer Zavateri, Paul and Oliver Cole's impressive Goodwood victor Jel Pepper and Hugo Palmer's dual winner Tricky Tel others of interest.
