Perfectly prepared – Mukhairi can carry weight that comes with No. 10 shirt

PETALING JAYA: In Malaysian football, few jerseys carry more weight than Selangor's number 10.
Worn by legends, most notably the late, great Datuk Mokhtar Dahari, it is more than just a number. It's a legacy.
And now, that legacy rests on the shoulders of 23-year-old midfielder Mukhairi Ajmal Mahadi ( pic ), who hails from Sungai Lembing, Pahang.
'Wearing the number 10 jersey is indeed heavy, especially for a club like Selangor,' admitted Mukhairi.
'Many legends have worn it, especially the late great Mokhtar Dahari. The responsibility of that jersey is huge. But I'm not seeing it as a burden - I can carry it. I will continue doing my best for this team.'
As the new Malaysian Super League season approaches, many eyes will be on Selangor.
The Red Giants face the biggest possible test - a Charity Shield clash with perennial powerhouse Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) on Aug 8, which also acts as a league fixture.
Selangor's pre-season preparations have been steady, structured, and purposeful, according to Mukhairi, though some fans have been worried about the team's mixed form.
'We've had a lot of game time, and I would say pre-season has been good. Pre-season is one way to ascertain our weaknesses. From there, we work on it and make sure the season goes well,' he said.
He credits not just the training intensity, but also the chemistry developing within the squad.
'Even the new foreign players that have joined us are working well. The harmony is there and everyone is communicating. We still have a few days left to train, and we'll use that time to build a strong team.'
With multiple Super League titles and a deep, star-studded squad, JDT will once again enter the Charity Shield as heavy favourites but
Mukhairi refuses to be fazed.
'Yes, JDT are the favourites, but I hope my teammates and I can give them a tough fight.'
Mukhairi is not naive about the scale of the task ahead, but he is not intimidated either.
'We have to take on whatever situation comes our way. We'll do our best before that tie.'

Sports minister says Sukma 2026 to feature e-sports, chess, cricket, and kabaddi

SHAH ALAM, Aug 5 — The 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor will feature the new sports of e-sports, chess, cricket and kabaddi, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said. She shared that the four sports were approved at the SUKMA Supreme Council meeting that she chaired today, adding that boxing and softball were also selected as mandatory sports for SUKMA effective from the 2026 edition. 'This brings the number of mandatory sports to 30. With the four additional sports approved for SUKMA 2026, 34 sports will be contested,' she said at a media conference after chairing the meeting here today, as she noted that the decision was final and no additional appeals would be entertained. This would ensure that the organiser had sufficient time to prepare for the Games, scheduled for Aug 15 to 24, 2026 in Selangor, she added. The meeting today also approved the official participation of the Brunei Darussalam contingent in SUKMA 2026, but the number of sports will be determined by a special technical committee soon, while the State Youth and Sports Exco meeting, which was also held today, agreed that state participation for the Para SUKMA would be managed by state sports councils from 2026, replacing the state youth and sports department to ensure preparation of para athletes was more strategic and focused. Yeoh also shared that they would continue developing sports for women following the lack of female athletes and technical officials in SUKMA 2024 in Sarawak, with today's meeting agreeing that for every open event, participation of athletes of different genders were compulsory. 'For sports events contested at the Olympic Games, they will be held and not dropped according to previous SUKMA regulations even if the number of women athletes did not meet the minimum requirement of six states. 'This is a very important departure to encourage women sports continue to provide opportunities to compete, even with the lack of investment and funds from all states,' Yeoh said. Also, each state contingent has been asked to appoint a woman head of contingent or deputy head and to have a 20 per cent quota of female support officials for secretariat and medical duties beginning from SUKMA 2026. 'Selangor SUKMA will have at least 30 per cent female volunteers and 20 per cent female tournament technical officials. I feel this is a very inclusive Games and many will wait to see how this SUKMA is different from the ones before,' she added. — Bernama

Amri's famous goal still haunts Van der Sar after 16 years

KUALA LUMPUR: "I know you — I think I've seen you before." That was the reaction of former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar when he met his old tormentor, Amri Yahyah, at a recent event in Johor Bahru. It was their first encounter in 16 years — since Amri scored that memorable long-range strike past the Dutchman during a friendly between Malaysia and Manchester United at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil in 2009. In a video shared by a TikTok user, Van der Sar was seen shaking hands with Amri before immediately recognising the Malaysian forward. "I was told he (Amri) would be coming. My friend showed me the video (of the goal). It was an amazing strike," said the former Champions League winner. "I understand why you're so proud of it. All the fans were celebrating the goal. I think it's one of the best goals I've ever conceded. It's great to see you again." In 2009, Van der Sar looked stunned and in disbelief after being beaten by Amri's left-footed volley — a goal still fondly remembered by Malaysian fans. United had taken a 2-0 lead in the opening 30 minutes of that match through goals from Wayne Rooney and Nani, but Amri pulled one back just before half-time with a thunderous effort. He then added a second after the break to level the match 2-2. Michael Owen eventually netted a late winner to seal a 3-2 victory for the Red Devils. In May, Manchester United returned to Malaysia for the first time since 2009, but were stunned 1-0 by the Asean All-Stars in Bukit Jalil.

'Only JDT look serious': Analyst slams sorry state of Super League

KUALA LUMPUR: The new Super League season kicks off on Friday — but the domestic campaign is already under threat, with poor pre-seasons, lack of ambition, and fading interest raising serious concerns. While defending champions Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) look sharp after a solid pre-season tour in Spain, many other clubs appear unprepared — a worrying sign for both the league's competitiveness and the national team's preparations. The curtain-raiser comes in the form of the Charity Shield clash between JDT and Selangor at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, but critics say excitement around the new season is notably lacking. "There's a lot of uncertainty in the Super League, except for JDT," said football analyst Dr Zulakbal Abdul Karim. "It feels like some clubs are participating just for the sake of it. Pre-season has been subdued, with hardly any teams going abroad like they used to." Zulakbal warned the domestic league's stagnation could lead to a slow start, with players lacking sharpness, low crowd turnouts, and financial hits due to poor gate receipts. "Clubs don't seem to have the funds for proper pre-season prep," he added. "Some don't even bother because they believe no one can challenge JDT. That kind of mindset is damaging for Malaysian football." JDT's dominance — 11 titles in a row — has made the M-League highly predictable, with many clubs seemingly surrendering before a ball is even kicked. The deeper concern is the impact this may have on Harimau Malaya, with two crucial friendlies coming up during the Fifa window against Singapore (Sept 4) and Palestine (Sept 8). National coach Peter Cklamovski has already warned that he needs players to arrive fit and match-ready as the games are warm-ups for the Asian Cup qualifiers. "If players arrive unfit, low on confidence, or carrying knocks, it will hurt the national team," said Zulakbal. "Singapore are always a tough derby, and Palestine narrowly missed out on the 2026 World Cup. We need our best players at their peak."
