Sunderland's return to Premier League ‘impossible to predict'

A stoppage-time winner from 19-year-old substitute Tommy Watson capped a remarkable campaign – in which the French coach has marshalled a side that finished 16th in last season's second tier – as they earned a top-flight return after eight years away.
'It was impossible to predict,' said Le Bris. 'They played fantastic football sometimes (last season). Against Southampton they won 5-0, so it was clear that it was possible to play very good football and to be efficient and very dominant.
'But at the same time, they were so inconstant, so my job was to give the methodology to bring this consistency.'
It had looked unlikely for much of a play-off final during which the Blades had had the better of Le Bris' side, taking the lead midway through the first half through Tyrese Campbell's wonderful clipped finish.
A contentious VAR call denied Chris Wilder's team the goal that would have put them two ahead and cruising back to the Premier League, from which they were relegated in last place a year ago.

Harrison Burrows' strike was ruled out with his team-mate Vinicius Sousa judged to have interfered with the view of goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.
It gave Sunderland a lifeline that they duly clung on to haul themselves out of the Championship, first Eliezer Mayenda rifled the ball unto the roof of the goal to level with 14 minutes to play, before Watson wrote himself into Wearside folklore with his final action for the club before departing for Brighton.
Le Bris added: 'We need talented players, we need strong connections between them. I think they deserve this.
'They worked so well together. This game is a good example of the season.'

Le Bris added that he had no doubt in including Durham-born Watson in his squad and throwing him on with 17 minutes to play at Wembley, despite him having agreed a move to the Amex last month.
'It was clear in our mind and in his mind that he is still a Sunderland player and the squad accepted this decision as well, knowing that he's a good player and he can help,' he said.
Blades boss Chris Wilder, whose side led the Championship at the end of March before suffering a late collapse, reflected on a difficult summer ahead for his players.
What a way to sign off…

'It's going to take quite a while to get over this one,' he said. 'We're going to have to suffer and go through the pain.
'They're big boys and they've got to get over it if they're going to have decent careers.'
Of the controversially-disallowed goal in the first half – where Burrows was judged to have unsighted the goalkeeper – Wilder said: 'I don't think the goalkeeper saves it. I don't think he gets anywhere near it.'

Diogo Jota inducted into Wolves' hall of fame following death

Jota died in a car crash along with his brother Andre Silva in Spain on July 3, aged 28. The Portugal international, who had just won the Premier League with Liverpool, began his career in English football at Molineux, scoring 44 goals in 131 appearances between 2017 and 2020. Diogo Jota has been inducted into the Wolves Hall of Fame 💛 It's a tribute that honours both his remarkable achievements for the club and the deep impact his passing has had on the footballing world. — Wolves (@Wolves) July 17, 2025 Wolves have remembered Jota's contribution to the club with his induction into the hall of fame, which is run independently by a committee. 'There is such a feeling of sadness and disbelief around this awful tragedy that we wanted to make this tribute of our own as soon as we could,' said Wolves hall of fame chairman and club vice president John Richards on the club website. 'Like everyone else, we've been stunned by events, and we remember what a wonderful player Diogo was for Wolves during that unforgettable promotion season under Nuno and our early years back in the Premier League. 'His record of 44 goals at Wolves, and then 65 at Liverpool as a Premier League title winner, speaks volumes. So many fans across the game – especially in Portugal after he helped them win the Nations League this summer – are feeling his loss deeply. We saw no reason to delay this decision. 'We hope it will bring a little comfort to those who were close to Diogo and Andre, and we trust Wolves supporters will understand that this gesture is made with real love and admiration, and also fully justified.' Wolves are planning to remember their former player further, firstly in the home friendly against Celta Vigo and then against Manchester City on the opening day of the season.

Anthony Elanga labels Newcastle team-mate Alexander Isak as one of world's best

The 23-year-old winger completed his move to Tyneside last Friday and is united with fellow Sweden international Isak, who has been at the heart of transfer speculation this summer. Liverpool were one of those said to be interested in securing the striker's services, but it is understood Newcastle value him at around £150million in a bid to fend off potential suitors. Although Isak has been surrounded by intense speculation, newcomer Elanga has so far enjoyed working with his international colleague. 'A player of Alex's stature there's always going to be noise around him,' Elanga said. 'For me, he's one of the best players in the world, one of the best attackers in the world. I've played with him at international level so I can say so. 'There's always going to be noise, but at the end of the day he's a Newcastle player right now. I'm just trying to focus on what he's doing in training, showing his qualities and speaking to him every day. 'Whenever I speak to Alex it's always about good things – how my family is, how his family is and that's the first thing he asked me – how my family is – because he sees them all the time when he comes with the national team. 'I always try and focus on the present and the now. Alex being the player he is, one of the best attackers in the world, I think there's always going to be noise around him, but he's the type of player who is always staying focused. Anthony Elanga. Newcastle United player. 😁 — Newcastle United (@NUFC) July 11, 2025 'What he's shown in training is second to none. I'm looking forward to continuing training with him. 'Not just him, but Anthony Gordon who I'm also close with. He's helped me a lot settling in – he came from a different city as well. It's been amazing so far.' Elanga arrives for a reported fee that could eventually amount to £55million and has been thrown straight into action, joining this week's training camp in Austria ahead of pre-season starting on Saturday with a clash against Celtic. Newcastle are aiming to build on last year's stellar campaign which saw them secure their first major domestic silverware in 70 years by winning the Carabao Cup in March, as well as securing a Champions League spot. Elanga is ready to make his impact, suggesting 'anything is possible' this season. Asked how far Newcastle are from challenging for a Premier League title, he replied: 'We just take it game by game, focusing on each day that comes to you, wanting to improve, wanting to learn, wanting to take in information that the gaffer says. Anything is possible. 'The players we have, the coaching staff and adding Martin (Mark) from Midtjylland as set-piece coach. Those little one per cents are only going to make us improve even more. 'We're really on the right track. Having been involved in the sessions this week, I can really sense that feeling of we really want to grab something and win something this year. 'We take it game by game, focus on every session. Anything is possible really.'

Morgan Gibbs-White makes Nottingham Forest transfer demand amid £60m Tottenham feud

Tottenham still have hopes of signing Morgan Gibbs-White despite Nottingham Forest threatening legal action over an "illegal approach" for the England international after triggering his £60m release clause Morgan Gibbs-White wants his future to be resolved before Nottingham Forest jet off to Portugal for their pre-season training camp. ‌ The 25-year-old is the subject of a furious transfer row after Tottenham activated his £60million release clause and thought they had snapped up the England international for a relative bargain. ‌ But Forest hit back and accused the North London side of an "illegal approach" and said they would be consulting their lawyers after concerns of a confidentiality breach relating to the player's release clause. ‌ Forest said they considered the move off for the time being after reporting Spurs to the Premier League and Gibbs-White has since returned to pre-season training with Nuno Espirito Santo's club. Gibbs-White has been showing an "exemplary attitude" in training despite the uncertainty over his future, as reported by the Daily Mail, but is still eager to link up with Thomas Frank's Tottenham. He held talks with Forest officials at the club's training ground on Monday and now wants clarity over where he will be playing his football next season. ‌ Gibbs-White is "hopeful" a solution can be found by the end of the weekend as Forest prepare for their first pre-season friendly against Monaco on Saturday. While in Portugal, Forest are set to play against Fulham and local side Estoril Praia. The report adds that the "ball is in Tottenham's court", with the Europa League champions weighing up a second bid worth around £65m - but it is unclear whether that would be enough to change Forest's minds. ‌ If no progress is made on a bid, Gibbs-White is expected to travel with Forest for their trip to Portugal. The team are set to stay in the country until August 1. They will return for games against Fiorentina and Al Qadsiah at the City Ground before their Premier League opener against Brentford on August 17. Frank would be eager to have Gibbs-White in his squad as soon as possible to get a full pre-season with the talented midfielder, who scored seven goals in the Premier League last season - assisting a further eight. His superb performances have also led to interest from Manchester City and he now has a total of four caps with England - with Thomas Tuchel calling him up for recent games against Andorra and Senegal. Spurs are hoping to make him their second major signing of the summer after already securing the signature of West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus for £55m.
