Greywater constitutes nearly 75pc total household wastewater
Thiruvananthapurm, June 5 (UNI) Greywater constitutes nearly 75% of total household wastewater, often discharged untreated into soak pits, posing serious environmental and public health concerns.
This was one of the major discussion points at the National Conclave on Sustainable Environmental Solutions, which brought together eminent policymakers, technocrats, and researchers to deliberate on innovative and actionable strategies for environmental sustainability in India.
A key highlight of the event was the technology transfer of CSIR-NIIST's engineered modular wetland system (patent filed) for greywater treatment and reuse at the household level.
Developed by a team led by Dr. Krishnakumar B from the Environmental Technology Division, the modular system is compact, energy-free, and scalable and produces reuse-quality water for applications like gardening, horticulture, and toilet flushing.
On the side-lines of the conclave, CSIR-NIIST signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with V-Tech Instrumentation (India) Pvt. Ltd. Thiruvananthapuram, for the field implementation and commercial rollout of this innovative technology.
In his presidential address, Dr. C. Anandharamakrishnan, Director, CSIR-NIIST, underscored the institute's enduring mission of translating cutting-edge science into practically viable and socially relevant solutions.
He also highlighted the institute's leadership in the National Mission on Sustainable Packaging Solutions, led by CSIR-NIIST, which aims to accelerate India's transition toward a plastic-free and environmentally responsible future.
'Our initiatives in sustainable packaging are aligned with the country's march toward a circular economy and greener industry practices,' he added.
As part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations and World Environment Day, the CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) organized the Conclave on Wednesday.
The Conclave was inaugurated by Prof. V. K. Ramachandran, Chairperson of the Kerala State Planning Board, who served as the Chief Guest.
In his address, Prof. Ramachandran emphasised the impact of floods and landslides preceded by drought. There is a need for science-based studies and interventions to bring resilience in the era of climate change.
The event was also attended by Dr. C Anandharamakrishnan, Director, CSIR-NIIST, Dr. G. Shankar, Architect and Founder, Habitat Technology Group and Prof. N. V. Chalapathi Raju, Director, NCESS.
The conclave served as a platform to showcase CSIR-NIIST's impactful research and technologies that address real-world environmental problems, including climate-resilient solutions in water management, waste-to-resource technologies, and green innovations for communities.
With its convergence of thought leadership and scientific advancement, the CSIR-NIIST Golden Jubilee Conclave marked a major milestone in the institute's journey, reinforcing its position as a pioneer in science-led transformation.

KOCHI: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday planted the 1,00,000th neem (aryaveppu) sapling on the campus of Rajagiri High School, Kalamassery, marking the culmination of a massive two-year-long tree-planting drive across Ernakulam district. The environmental campaign was launched on June 5, 2023 — World Environment Day — when Industries Minister P Rajeeve planted the first sapling, with the mission to plant 1 lakh neem saplings across the district. Spearheaded by Sriman Narayanan's 'Ente Gramam Gandhi Jeevitham Mission', based in Muppathadam, the initiative has now reached its green milestone. The final phase of the campaign saw the planting of the remaining 12,000 saplings in the past few weeks in various parts of the district, ensuring the target was met before the next Environment Day cycle. 'Ernakulam is one of the districts worst hit by air, water, and soil pollution. Neem, with its remarkable purifying and medicinal qualities, is an ideal choice to fight this environmental degradation,' said Sriman Narayanan, who leads the mission. Known for its immunity-boosting and pest-repelling properties, neem tree is also believed to have benefits in post-Covid health management. The organisers focused on densely populated urban colonies, where both human and ecological health need urgent attention. The saplings were sourced from nurseries in Tamil Nadu.

'Rhino goes to School' : Assam's wildlife NGO's innovative campaign to boost rhino conservation
Guwahati, June 29 (UNI) The rhino goes to School in Assam! Sounds weird, but yes the rhinos are being taken to the schools to make the school children, particularly those living near the one-horned rhinos bearing areas in Assam, aware about the rhinos and to ensure better conservation of the species in future. While the rhinos are literally not going to the schools, a wildlife conservation organization, Aaranyak, has been taking one of their most effective campaigns "Rhino Goes to School" to make the younger generations aware about the one-horned rhinos, the state animal of Assam. Supported by David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, Aaranyak's main objective behind the program is to create awareness among students on Rhino conservation. "From this program students will get more information about Rhinos, so that they can contribute to conservation in the future. The program includes power point presentation, Poster Presentation, open interaction and open quiz sessions," said Arif Hussain, Programme Manager of Aaranyak. "We believe that we must teach the children about conservation of environment and wildlife at tender age only. We are running this programme for last 15 years and we are happy to announce over a lakh school children are trained under this programme," said Arif. He said that "Rhino Goes to School" programme does not only included awareness about the one horned rhinos. It also includes stories about real life experience on how we can contribute towards conservation, he said. He said that the goal of the programme is to create awareness about rhino conservation and build future stewards for the conservation of this iconic species which is also the State Animal of Assam. Uttarakhand: CM Dhami plants sapling along with his mother and son under 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 28 (ANI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami planted a sapling along with his mother Bishna Devi on Saturday under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign. Chief Minister's son Diwakar also planted a sapling on the occasion. This initiative aims to inspire every person to plant a tree in honour of their mother so that environmental protection can be made a mass movement through emotional attachment.
