Jamie Smith Breaks Record Of Highest Score By England Wicketkeeper In Tests
After coming out to bat at No. 7 for England in the first innings of the ongoing second Test against India, Smith has hammered 174 runs so far.
Jamie Smith is on fire for England in the ongoing second Test against India. In the match taking place at Edgbaston in Birmingham, the 24-year-old right-handed wicketkeeper-batter came out to bat at No. 7 for the Ben Stokes-led side and has scored 174 runs so far.
By crossing the 173-run mark in the third session of the third day's play, he entered his name in the history books, as he now holds the record of the highest score in Test cricket by a wicketkeeper-batter for England. Smith broke Alec Stewart's record of 173 runs.
During the England-New Zealand match played at Eden Park in Auckland from January 24 to 28 in 1997, Stewart scored 173 runs from 277 balls as a No. 3 batter for England in the first innings.
A total of four stumpers—Smith, Stewart, Jonny Bairstow, and Jos Buttler—on six occasions have scored more than 150 runs in an innings of a Test match for England.

The overall record of the highest score in a Test match by a wicketkeeper-batter is in the name of Zimbabwe legend Andy Flower. During the India-Zimbabwe Test match played in Nagpur from November 25 to 29 in 2000, Flower remained unbeaten on 232 runs from 444 balls in the second innings.
A total of nine wicketkeeper-batters have scored 10 double centuries in Test cricket.

Smith, who added 303 runs for the sixth wicket with Harry Brook (158), would like to add many more to his tally and possibly cross the 200-run mark as well. If he manages to score a double century, then he will become the first England and overall 10th wicketkeeper to achieve the feat in the five-day format of the game.

India vs England: 'Very tempting to play Kuldeep, but ...': Shubman Gill explains Edgbaston selection call
Shubnam Gill (Pic credit: BCCI) Shubman Gill , leading India in a historic series-levelling triumph at Edgbaston, revealed the rationale behind excluding in-form wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav from the playing XI. Despite the allure of Kuldeep's wicket-taking prowess, the team opted for Washington Sundar to bolster lower-order batting following twin collapses in the Leeds Test. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'It's very tempting when you have a bowler like Kuldeep,' Gill said after India's emphatic 336-run win. 'One of the reasons why I wanted to play Washington was because he gives us batting depth.' Poll How do you feel about India's chances at Lord's? Very optimistic Cautiously optimistic Not very optimistic Pessimistic Washington vindicated that decision with his all-round performance — offering key contributions with both bat and ball — helping India to their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston and their biggest victory overseas by runs. Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir shut critics with thumping win over England Gill highlighted how a crucial partnership between himself and Washington shifted momentum. 'If there was no partnership, our lead would have been around 70-80-90 runs, which is psychologically very different from 180.' The skipper also emphasised the importance of spinners like Washington and Jadeja when the Dukes ball goes soft after 30-odd overs, offering limited assistance to pacers. 'Sometimes spin gives you more control than fast bowling. That was our mindset.' Elaborating on in-game strategies, Gill admitted taking a calculated risk during England's first innings. 'When they were 83/5, we went for short balls to try for that extra wicket and break through. We leaked some runs but were ahead enough in the game to afford that.' 'Any attack of ours can take 20 wickets anywhere': Shubman Gill hails Mohd Siraj, Akash Deep after historic Edgbaston win Addressing India's long-standing Edgbaston jinx, Gill was unfazed. 'I don't believe in stats or history. I believe this is the best Indian team capable of winning here.' He also disclosed that his dominant form - 585 runs in four innings - was a result of dedicated Test preparation that began as the IPL wound down. 'I want to make the most of this purple patch,' he said. The focus now shifts to Lord's, with Gill optimistic: 'We've got the momentum. If we keep fighting, this could be a series to remember.' IND vs ENG: Will Jofra Archer make England Test return after four years at Lord's? Captain Ben Stokes reveals insights
England are likely to make some wholesome changes in their bowling line-up at Lord's with a possibility of Jofra Archer returning in whites for the first time in four years in the third Test against India, starting from July 10. The England bowling attack which comprises of Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse, have leaked out 835 runs in the first Test and 1014 runs in the second, thus raising serious eyebrows. With the Indian batters in scintillating form, the England pace attack looked toothless in both the Tests. England captain Ben Stokes hinted at a few changes in the third Test after the hosts were humiliated by 336 runs at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Archer, who last played a Test match for England in 2021, have made an international comeback last year after being on and off the field due to injuries. He was initially in contention for the first Test against India at Headingley but had to be ruled out due to a thumb injury he sustained during the Indian Premier League while playing for Rajasthan Royals. He was added to the squad for the second Test but couldn't make it to the finl XI. With the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy level at 1-1, England would potentially bring in Archer at Lord's. 'That'll be a decision we have to make, seeing how everyone comes together," replied Stokes when asked about Archer's inclusion in the third Test. "We've had him here this week to get around the group and build him up with his workloads and everything. So, everyone's being considered for the game at Lord's,' added the England captain.
