Jamie Smith is on fire for England in the ongoing second Test against India. In the match taking place at Edgbaston in Birmingham, the 24-year-old right-handed wicketkeeper-batter came out to bat at No. 7 for the Ben Stokes-led side and has scored 174 runs so far.
By crossing the 173-run mark in the third session of the third day's play, he entered his name in the history books, as he now holds the record of the highest score in Test cricket by a wicketkeeper-batter for England. Smith broke Alec Stewart's record of 173 runs.
During the England-New Zealand match played at Eden Park in Auckland from January 24 to 28 in 1997, Stewart scored 173 runs from 277 balls as a No. 3 batter for England in the first innings.
A total of four stumpers—Smith, Stewart, Jonny Bairstow, and Jos Buttler—on six occasions have scored more than 150 runs in an innings of a Test match for England.

The overall record of the highest score in a Test match by a wicketkeeper-batter is in the name of Zimbabwe legend Andy Flower. During the India-Zimbabwe Test match played in Nagpur from November 25 to 29 in 2000, Flower remained unbeaten on 232 runs from 444 balls in the second innings.
A total of nine wicketkeeper-batters have scored 10 double centuries in Test cricket.

Smith, who added 303 runs for the sixth wicket with Harry Brook (158), would like to add many more to his tally and possibly cross the 200-run mark as well. If he manages to score a double century, then he will become the first England and overall 10th wicketkeeper to achieve the feat in the five-day format of the game.
