Bangladeshi criminal hiding under guise of sadhu in Bengal held
Kolkata, Aug 3 (PTI) A Bangladeshi criminal, who had entered India and had been hiding in West Bengal under the guise of a monk, was arrested from Nadia district, police said on Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, sleuths of the West Bengal STF, along with the local police, conducted a raid in the Tehatta area on Saturday night and apprehended 60-year-old Mohammed Hashem Mallik, also known as Hashem Ali Mallik, who was wanted in several cases in Bangladesh, an officer said.
Based on a complaint lodged by Sub-Inspector Mohammed Abdun Noor Chowdhury of the West Bengal Special Task Force, an investigation was started, he said.
'Hashem was allegedly involved in heinous crimes in Bangladesh. He created a fake Indian identity and had been hiding in Baliura Purba Para in Tehatta. We had information about him. With the help of local police, we conducted a raid and arrested him on Saturday evening," the officer said.
The accused was apprehended after he failed to produce valid identity documents to prove himself as an Indian, the police said.
'During preliminary interrogation, the Bangladeshi criminal admitted that he had crossed the border to escape legal proceedings in Bangladesh for the crimes he committed there," the officer said, adding that he also confessed to having forged Indian identity documents. PTI SCH BDC

Madras HC issues notice on PIL seeking safety check of grounded sulphur-laden ship at VOC Port
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Tuesday issued notice to central and state governments on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed seeking direction to conduct a safety inspection before allowing a ship, which ran aground while entering VOC Port in Thoothukudi, to leave Indian waters. Petitioner K Rajan, a former cargo ship captain from Kanniyakumari, stated that the ship MV NAVIX which was carrying over 39,000 tonnes of sulphur, ran aground on July 29, one mile away from the breakwater at the port entrance and remained grounded for two days, before being pulled back into the waters and berthed for unloading. Since the vessel carried hazardous cargo, it should be verified whether there was any environmental impact due to the grounding incident, he added. Counsel for VOC Port, informed the bench of justices SM Subramaniam and AD Maria Clete that that necessary inspection has been conducted. The case was adjourned for two weeks.

Two Indian-origin men drown in Colorado river
A late Sunday evening outing on August 3, 2025 in a waterbody turned fatal for two of the five picnickers in the scenic Topock Gorge of the Colorado river. 'The victims have been identified as Anoop Gankidi, 32 of Tempe, Arizona, and Venkata Mukkaala, 32 of Milpitas, California,' according to a statement released by Mohave County Sheriff's Office. The Indian-origin men had hired a rental pontoon which was parked on the edge of the river at the time of the incident. 'All five occupants of the boat had entered the water to cool off when three of them slipped underwater and began to struggle. One of the occupants was able to get back to the shallow area, however Gankidi and Mukkaala did not resurface,' says the statement by the Sheriff's office. San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department which was first to arrive at the scene deployed a diver. The SBCSD diver was able to locate and retrieve one of the missing men and tried life-saving measures before transporting the person to water safety centre. Both the men were transported to the Colorado River Medical Center in Needles but were pronounced deceased. Investigators said that the two victims had been underwater for approximately 20 minutes when divers arrived on scene and were located in approximately 12 feet of water. The men were not under influence, said the sheriff's office.

Doctor Faces Racism In Ireland, Says Children Mocked Him In "Broken Indian Accent"
An Irish-born doctor of Pakistani origin was racially abused by a group of children, including one as young as 10 years old, outside a shopping complex last week. According to The Irish Independent, Dr Taimoor Salman, a medical registrar at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, claimed that a group of children shouted abusive remarks towards him in a "broken Indian accent". He also alleged that the children impersonated Apu, an Indian immigrant proprietor in the popular American series ' The Simpsons'. According to the outlet, the incident occurred when Dr Salman was leaving Blackcastle Shopping Centre after 9 pm last Thursday. As he stepped into his car, a young boy cycled in front of him and allegedly shouted "Mr Curry Man". "I said he was being very rude and as I reversed an older boy, a young teen, came up and asked me if I had said something so I told him that his friend had been rude," Dr Salman said. "The older boy told me to shut up and then started doing impersonations of Apu, the Indian shopkeeper in The Simpsons. I just left. I didn't say anything more as they were children," he continued. Recalling his experience, Dr Salman said, "I was stunned and upset. I have seen racial abuse and throw away remarks first hand to me and my colleagues at the hospital but I would never expect this from children who are generally very accepting of other nationalities. There seems to be a horrible pack mentality and this incident was insidious." According to The Irish Independent, Dr Salman was born in Ireland, and his parents were born in Pakistan. His father trained and practised as a surgeon and worked in Our Lady's Hospital in Navan before moving the family to work in the UK and Saudi Arabia. "I lived in Navan and went to primary school here and have nothing but good memories of the town as a child. I never experienced any racism here. That's part of the reason I came back to live here with my wife and young daughter in 2017 and after I began working in the hospital in Drogheda," Dr Salman said. However, he now believes that the locality has recently become too dangerous. "This wave of hatred to people of colour is quite recent and increasingly more open and brash. I've been back in Ireland for 15 years. In 2017, it was a peaceful and safe place and I could walk anywhere at any time without fear. Now it is too unsafe and I would only go to crowded places," the doctor said. "There is no invasion in this country. This is everyone's home and everyone has to be respectful to everyone else. Racism is ugly and it shouldn't be accepted or tolerated," he added.
