Miami were playing their first MLS game in more than a month. They had advanced past the first phase of the Club World Cup but fell 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 last week.
Messi made sure there was no lingering let-down for Javier Mascherano's side, who are aiming to improve on their curent sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 32 points from 17 matches.
'It is a great night, we took the three points that were very necessary to start thinking about the MLS again,' Mascherano said. 'It is never easy to reintegrate into the competition after the Club World Cup, and the players have done it perfectly.'
Messi was a key figure throughout, although it was his miscue that led to the first goal for Montreal.
His backpass fell right in front of Montreal's Prince Owusu, who fired a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Oscar Ustari to make it 1-0 after two minutes.
Messi more than atoned. In the 33rd minute, Messi found Tadeo Allende outside the area and Allende chipped a shot over Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirios.
In the 40th minute Messi conjured his trademark magic, cutting in from the right corner of the box, eluding Fernando Alvarez and curling the ball in at the far post for a goal that gave Miami a 2-1 halftime lead.
Telasco Segovia made it 3-1 in the 60th minute with a blast from outside the area that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net.
Messi bagged his second goal two minutes later, evading four defenders and finishing an outstanding solo run with a shot into the heart of the goal.
Messi now has seven goals in his last four MLS matches, bringing his total to 12 in 14 games.
'Leo is happy playing football,' Mascherano said. 'Every time he is fit, he is going to play. Clearly we have an extra advantage when he plays and we want to use that advantage as much as possible.'
Miami now face a hectic MLS stretch, with five more matches before the end of the month.

Loperfido homers as the Blue Jays beat the White Sox 8-4 for their 9th consecutive win

Joey Loperfido homered and drove in three runs, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 8–4 on Monday night for their ninth consecutive win. Addison Barger and Nathan Lukes also connected as AL East–leading Toronto improved to 27–10 in its last 37 games. Bo Bichette had two hits, and All-Star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked three times. At 53–38, the Blue Jays matched the franchise record for most victories before the All-Star break. It's the longest win streak for the team since an 11-game run in August 2015. José Berríos (5–3) pitched six innings of one-run ball, bouncing back nicely after he struggled in a no-decision against the New York Yankees on Wednesday. The right-hander improved to 16–6 with a 2.96 ERA in 27 career starts against Chicago. Mike Tauchman had three hits and two RBIs for the last-place White Sox, who won two of three at Toronto last month. Colson Montgomery, one of the team's top prospects, went 0 for 3 with a walk in his home debut. The Blue Jays opened an 8–1 lead when they scored five times in the sixth. Barger hit a two-run drive off Sean Burke for his 12th homer, and Loperfido chopped a two-run single over a drawn-in infield. Burke (4–8) was charged with six runs and six hits in five-plus innings. The right-hander allowed two earned runs in 16 1/3 innings over his previous three outings. Key moment: Loperfido and Lukes hit back-to-back homers in the fifth, giving Toronto a 3–1 lead. It was Loperfido's first homer of the season and No. 5 for his career. Key stat: It was Chicago's eighth consecutive home loss against Toronto. Up next: Chris Bassitt (8–4, 4.32 ERA) starts for Toronto on Tuesday night, and fellow right-hander Aaron Civale (0–3, 4.29 ERA) pitches for Chicago.

New York Knicks hire Mike Brown, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year

The New York Knicks hired Mike Brown on Monday, turning to the two-time NBA Coach of the Year after firing Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks offered the job to Brown last week and announced Monday that he would be taking over the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals last season for the first time in 25 years. They decided to fire Thibodeau despite that and eventually picked Brown, who wasn't out of work long after getting fired by the Sacramento Kings during last season. The Knicks liked Brown's experience working as an assistant on teams that have won four NBA championships–two more than the Knicks franchise has won. 'Mike has coached on the biggest stages in our sport and brings championship pedigree to our organization,' Knicks president Leon Rose said in a statement. 'His experience leading the bench during the NBA Finals, winning four titles as an assistant coach, and his ability to grow and develop players will all help us as we aim to bring a championship to New York for our fans.' Brown had led the Kings to the postseason in 2023–their first appearance since 2006–and was voted the Coach of the Year. He also won the award in Cleveland, where he led the Cavaliers to the 2007 NBA Finals. He was on San Antonio's bench when the Spurs won the 2023 NBA title and was with the Golden State Warriors for their 2017, 2018, and 2022 championships, including going 12–0 as the acting head coach during the 2017 postseason when Steve Kerr was sidelined with a back injury. Brown is 454–304 in 11 seasons, winning at least 45 games in seven of them. He will take over a Knicks team with championship potential. The Knicks won at least 50 games in each of the last two seasons and knocked off 2024 champion Boston before falling to Indiana in six games in the East finals.

Powell Joining Heat, Collins to Clippers, Love and Anderson to Utah in 3-Team Trade, AP Source Says

The Miami Heat are acquiring Norman Powell. John Collins is going to the Los Angeles Clippers, and Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson are headed to the Utah Jazz as parts of a three-team trade, a person with knowledge of the agreement said Monday. Also in the deal: at least one second-round draft pick going from the Clippers to Utah, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the trade has not gotten the required approval from the NBA. Powell averaged 21.8 points last season for the Clippers and is a career 40 percent shooter from 3-point range. Collins averaged 19 points in 40 games for the Jazz last season, while Love averaged 5.3 points in 23 games with the Heat, and Anderson averaged 6.7 points in 25 games after being traded to Miami. ESPN first reported the agreement. Powell figures to give Miami much-needed scoring and shooting. The Heat were 24th out of 30 teams in points per game last season, plus have already seen the departure of Duncan Robinson–the team's all-time 3-point leader–this summer. Robinson is joining the Detroit Pistons. Love is an NBA champion, a five-time All-Star, a likely Hall of Famer when his playing days end, and had expressed interest in possibly remaining with the Heat even past his current contract–which expires after the coming 2025–26 season. Collins has averaged 16 points per game in eight seasons, the first six with Atlanta and two with Utah. Anderson will be joining his sixth team after previous stints with San Antonio, Memphis, Minnesota, and Golden State before getting sent to the Heat as part of the trade that moved Jimmy Butler to the Warriors.
