Police bust interstate auto robbery syndicate, recover 8 high-end cars

Hans India31-05-2025

New Delhi: The Delhi Police Crime Branch has busted an interstate syndicate involved in the theft and resale of high-end vehicles, a statement said on Friday.
The gang used a sophisticated modus operandi to sell stolen cars through online platforms by forging documents, opening bank accounts with fake identities, and tampering with engine and chassis numbers.
In a series of coordinated operations, the police arrested a key member of the gang and recovered eight luxury vehicles.
According to Delhi Police, the breakthrough came with the arrest of Rakesh Patel alias Pappu (38), a core operative of the syndicate, near Sahibabad Railway Station in Ghaziabad on April 21, 2025.
Acting on a tip-off, police apprehended him while he was attempting to sell a stolen Maruti Wagon-R via an online platform.
Patel, a resident of Sahibabad, Ghaziabad (UP), and originally from Mohiuddin Nagar, Samastipur (Bihar), played a central role in managing theft operations and delivering stolen vehicles across states.
His associates arranged vehicles, counterfeit documents, and fake number plates.
The gang's method was notably elaborate. After stealing a car, they searched online car-selling portals for vehicles of the same make, model, and colour.
Using open-source information, they identified details of genuine owners and forged documents in the owner's name -- featuring the photograph of one of the accused. They also opened bank accounts using these fake identities.
To avoid detection, the syndicate would tamper with the stolen car's engine and chassis numbers to match those of the legitimate vehicle. Fake Registration Certificates (RCs) were then prepared, making the stolen car appear genuine. Once the vehicle was thus 'cloned,' it was listed for sale on online platforms.
The syndicate targeted high-demand vehicles, often choosing cars parked in low-surveillance or roadside areas. The police noted the gang's use of advanced technological tools to support their operations.
A team led by Inspector Arun Sindhu of the Crime Branch spearheaded the investigation, which led to the arrest and recovery of the stolen vehicles.

The two accused were identified as Parikshit (22), the owner of the godown and a resident of Vasant Kunj, and PP Chengappa (40), a resident of Kodagu, Karnataka. According to the official, the seizure was made during a special drive being conducted across the district against the supply of illicit liquor and tobacco products, aimed at making Delhi a tobacco- and drug-free district. On June 27, the Operations Cell team received specific input about a large stockpile of illicit tobacco products stored in a basement warehouse at a house in Nangal Dewat, Vasant Kunj. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, the police team raided the location and detained the suspects. The police recovered the following items from the godown: L&B Original Silver - 13 cartons (13,000 packets), King Size Mayfair - 5 cartons (5,000 packets), Richmond King Size Real Blue - 50 cartons (50,000 packets) and Richmond King Size - 26 cartons (26,000 packets). The accused admitted that they had imported the cigarettes illegally from countries like Greece and Dubai. The consignment was meant to be distributed across Delhi-NCR and parts of South India, the police said. Following the recovery, a case was registered at Vasant Kunj South Police Station under Sections 07/14/20(2) of the COTPA Act. Both accused were taken into custody and further investigation was initiated to identify the broader network. A senior police officer said, "We are committed to acting against illegal suppliers of tobacco and drugs. This seizure is part of an ongoing effort to dismantle such rackets that threaten public health." The police also confirmed that more operations and surveillance are underway to trace the supply chain and other potential godowns or distributors linked to the accused.

Delhi Police crackdown against Chinese ‘manjha' ahead of Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan

In the lead-up to Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan, when kite flying traditionally surges in Delhi, police have intensified efforts to stamp out the illegal sale of Chinese manjha — a dangerous, glass-coated nylon string that has been banned in the capital since 2017. However, even as the police seized over 1,100 rolls of the banned string in recent raids, the hazardous thread claimed a life on Friday. On Friday evening, 22-year-old Yash Goswami, a resident of Karawal Nagar in northeast Delhi, died after his throat was slit by a strand of Chinese manjha while riding his scooter near the Rani Jhansi flyover in North Delhi. According to police, the incident occurred close to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, where Goswami was declared dead on arrival. 'Goswami suffered a deep cut on his neck, causing him to collapse on the spot. He was rushed to the hospital by passersby,' a police officer said. A case under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to causing death by negligence, was registered against unknown persons. 'The crime scene was inspected by the forensics team, and strands of Chinese manjha were recovered from the body as well as from the scooter,' an officer said. The incident came hours after raids were carried out by the Delhi Police Crime Branch in a crackdown against the sale and distribution of Chinese manjha. According to officials, the enforcement drive was launched to prevent such tragedies during the festive season. In the first operation on Thursday, officers raided a godown in Jeewan Park, Uttam Nagar, where they seized 922 rolls of the banned kite string and arrested Raju Chaurasia, 51. Chaurasia, a former shopkeeper, had allegedly turned to selling Chinese manjha both offline through local vendors and online via social media platforms like Facebook. Police said the suspect had two prior cases registered against him in 2022 for similar violations. The police said Chaurasia was lured back into the illegal trade by the high profit margins. He has been booked under Section 223B of BNS — for disobedience to a public servant's order — and Sections 5 and 15 of the Environment Protection Act, 1986. The next day, in a separate raid, police apprehended 22-year-old Areeb Khan near Ramleela Ground in Kamla Market. Khan, a former clothing shop worker from Lal Kaun in Daryaganj, was found transporting 248 rolls of Chinese manjha in four large cartons. During questioning, he allegedly admitted to joining the trade due to its lucrative returns.

Doc kept under 'digital arrest', loses Rs 3 crore

MUMBAI: A 70-year-old doctor was cheated by cyber criminals of Rs 3 crore and kept under "digital arrest" for eight days after being accused of involvement in a non-existent money laundering scam, a Mumbai police official said on Saturday. In the month of May, the victim got a call from a person identifying himself as telecom department staffer Amit Kumar, who told her a SIM card had been bought with her personal details for use in criminal activities. "She then got a call from another person who identified himself as Crime Branch officer Samadhan Pawar. He told the victim that her bank account and debit card details were found in a raid at the residence of an airline company owner who was earlier arrested for money laundering and is currently out on medical bail," the official said.
