Firefighters rescue dozens from burning high rise in Santiago
People waved shirts and other garments from the upper floors calling for help as a large plume of smoke rose into the sky. At least 15 fire companies responded, working quickly to successfully evacuate more than 100 people from the the building without loss of life. Some 40 people were treated on site, said Claudio Pavez, a coronel with Chile's national police force.
The building was located near the Plaza the Armas, one of the most bustling central area's of Santiago.
Juan Pablo Slako, a deputy commander with the firefighters, said that there were no fatalities and no serious injuries with most suffering smoke inhalation or shock.
'We don't have fire in the apartments, so we ask for calm,' said Álvaro Lara, vice superintendent of the firefighters, who added that the fire was controled.

31 workers have been safely removed after part of an industrial tunnel in LA collapsed
LOS ANGELES: Thirty-one workers have been safely removed from an industrial tunnel under construction in Los Angeles after part of it collapsed on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The collapse occurred 5 to 6 miles (8 to 9.7 kilometers) from the tunnel's sole entrance in an industrial section of the city. Aerial footage from local television showed workers being lifted up through the tunnel's entrance. Some workers on the other side of the collapsed portion of the tunnel scrambled over a 12 to 15-foot-tall (19.3 to 24.1-meter-tall) mound of loose soil and reached several coworkers on the other side. The workers were then shuttled several at a time by tunnel vehicle to the opening. Paramedics were evaluating 27 of the workers removed from the tunnel. The tunnel is under construction to eventually carry wastewater. It's 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide, LAFD said. More than 100 LAFD workers were assigned to the scene, including those who specialize in rescues from confined spaces.

A pacing dog helps Swiss rescuers find a man who fell into a glacier
GENEVA: Rescuers on Tuesday hailed as a 'four-legged hero' a furry Chihuahua whose pacing atop an Alpine rock helped a helicopter crew find its owner, who had fallen into a crevasse on a Swiss glacier nearby. The man, who was not identified, was exploring the Fee Glacier in southern Switzerland on Friday when he broke through a snow bridge and fell nearly 8 meters (about 26 feet), according to AirZermatt, a rescue, training and transport company. Equipped with a walkie-talkie, the man connected with a person nearby who relayed the accident to emergency services. But the exact location was unknown. After about a half-hour search, the pacing pooch caught the eye of a rescue team member. As the crew zeroed on the Chihuahua, the hole the man fell into became more visible. Rescuers rappelled down, rescued the man and flew him and his canine companion to a hospital. 'Imagine if the dog wasn't there,' AirZermatt spokesman Bruno Kalbermatten said by phone. 'I have no idea what would happen to this guy. I think he wouldn't survive this fall into the crevasse.' On its website, the company was effusive: 'The dog is a four-legged hero who may have saved his master's life in a life-threatening situation.'
