Nvidia says it will resume sales of 'H20' AI chips to China

Sharjah 243 days ago
The California-based company produces some of the world's most advanced semiconductors but cannot ship its most cutting-edge chips to China due to concerns that Beijing could use them to enhance military capabilities.
Nvidia developed the H20 -- a less powerful version of its AI processing units -- specifically for export to China. However, that plan stalled when the Trump administration tightened export licensing requirements in April.
"The US government has assured Nvidia that licenses will be granted, and Nvidia hopes to start deliveries soon," the company said in a statement Tuesday, adding it was "filing applications to sell the Nvidia H20 GPU again."
CEO Jensen Huang, wearing his trademark black leather jacket, told reporters in a video published by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV: "I'm looking forward to shipping H20s very soon, and so I'm very happy with that very, very good news."
Defending the policy change, Trump's AI Czar David Sacks told CNBC the H20 was a "deprecated chip" that is "not anywhere close to the state of the art."
He said the reversal on the H20 came because Nvidia's Chinese rival Huawei was making "huge strides" and could potentially threaten Nvidia's market dominance.
China represents a crucial market for Nvidia, but recent US export restrictions have intensified competition from local players like homegrown champion Huawei.
"We don't want to sell China our latest greatest technology, but I do think we at least want to make it a little bit difficult for Huawei," Sacks said.
Sacks also said that the decision was linked to ongoing trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing that are locked in a bitter trade feud.
Beijing has criticized Washington's curbs as unfair and designed to hinder its development.
'Abrupt shifts'
Zhang Guobin, founder of Chinese specialist website eetrend.com, said the resumption would "bring substantial revenue growth, making up for losses caused by the previous ban."
It would also ease trade friction impacts on the global semiconductor supply chain, he told AFP.
However, he noted Chinese firms would remain focused on domestic chip development, adding that "the Trump administration has been prone to abrupt policy shifts, making it difficult to gauge how long such an opening might endure."
Huang will attend a major supply chain gathering Wednesday, according to event organizers, his third trip to China this year, CCTV reported.
During an April visit to Beijing, Huang told Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng he "looked favorably upon the potential of the Chinese economy" and was "willing to continue to plow deeply into the Chinese market and play a positive role in promoting US-China trade cooperation," state news agency Xinhua reported.
The tightened US export curbs come as China's economy wavers, with domestic consumers reluctant to spend and a prolonged property sector crisis weighing on growth.
President Xi Jinping has called for greater self-reliance amid increasing external uncertainty.
The Financial Times reported in May that Nvidia was planning to build a research and development center in Shanghai, though neither Nvidia nor city authorities confirmed the project to AFP.
China's economy grew 5.2 percent in the second quarter, official data showed Tuesday, as analysts had predicted strong exports despite trade war pressures.

Gold set for weekly fall; platinum hits highest

Gold prices gained on Friday, but were on track for a weekly decline on easing concerns about the US Federal Reserve's independence and strong US data, while platinum rose to a near 11-year high. Spot gold was up 0.3% at $3,349.49 per ounce, as of 0834 GMT, after falling 1.1% in the previous session. The bullion has declined 0.2% so far this week. US gold futures eased 0.3% to $3,354.70. The dollar is down 0.4% for the day, but is headed for a second straight weekly rise. A stronger dollar tends to make gold expensive for buyers holding other currencies. Earlier in the week, a source told Reuters US President Donald Trump was open to firing Fed Chair Powell, but Trump later said he doesn't plan to sack him even as he renewed his criticism over interest rate policy. Meanwhile, US, data showed that retail sales rose more than expected in June, while initial jobless claims were better than expected. 'Market participants remain concerned about the independence of the Fed. For now, those risks have declined, and US economic data has remained solid, capping the upside for gold,' said UBS commodity analyst Giovanni Staunovo. 'But at the same time, Trump wants to see the Fed cutting rates aggressively... This is putting a floor under the market.' Bullion is viewed as a safe-haven asset during times of uncertainty and performs well in a low-interest rate environment. Reuters

HUAWEI Unveils Pura 80 Ultra with Advanced Cameras

Home » Top stories » HUAWEI Unveils Pura 80 Ultra with Advanced Cameras Smartphones have become the most popular tool for photography. A recent study revealed that 94% of the trillions of photos taken in 2024 were captured using smartphone cameras. Despite the popularity, a noticeable quality gap remains between smartphone cameras and mirrorless cameras. This is especially true for telephoto lenses, which often suffer from lower-grade sensors due to size and cost limitations. HUAWEI has announced a solution to this issue with its new Pura 80 Ultra smartphone. The device features a Switchable Dual Telephoto Camera, combining a 3.7x medium telephoto and a 9.4x super-telephoto lens that share a single large sensor. This setup brings the telephoto camera quality in line with that of main cameras on flagship phones. The large sensor, along with updated image processing algorithms, significantly improves low-light photography. According to HUAWEI, the Ultra Chroma Camera enhances detail restoration and color accuracy, particularly in long-distance and low-light conditions. Users can now capture high-quality images even at challenging events such as concerts or on wildlife safaris. The Pura 80 Ultra excels in scenarios with difficult lighting thanks to its ability to handle color saturation and dynamic range effectively. • The 3.7x telephoto lens produces flattering portraits with shallow depth of field. • The 9.4x super-telephoto lens enables close-ups from long distances without sacrificing detail. HUAWEI also revealed that the main camera has undergone a major upgrade. The 1-inch Ultra Lighting HDR Camera delivers superior performance with an exceptional dynamic range of 16EV. The F1.6-F4.0 variable aperture enhances light intake, improving clarity in both bright and dark environments. The AI Cinematic Engine enables the Pura 80 Ultra to record video with balanced exposure and vibrant detail. Whether capturing backlit portraits or flames in night scenes, the camera maintains lifelike color reproduction and realistic lighting. With this launch, HUAWEI aims to close the gap between smartphone and professional photography. The Pura 80 Ultra offers users creative freedom that was once only possible with dedicated camera equipment. Huawei Consumer Business Group continues to expand its global reach. With operations in over 170 countries and a wide range of smart devices, HUAWEI remains committed to innovation and intelligent user experiences.
