Alfons Freij impresses in pro debut — Winnipeg Jets' top prospect faces major SHL test next

Time of India06-06-2025

Photo byAlfons Freij didn't just dip his toes into pro hockey — he jumped in and held his own. The Winnipeg Jets' top pick from the 2024 draft wrapped up his first season in Sweden's HockeyAllsvenskan with steady results, flashing the kind of upside that had scouts buzzing last summer.
But with the SHL on deck, a potential World Juniors spotlight, and higher expectations from Winnipeg, his next steps will come with a lot more eyes — and a lot more pressure.
Winnipeg Jets 2024 draft pick Alfons Freij turns heads in Sweden — now eyes SHL leap and possible World Juniors breakout
Alfons Freij, just 19, suited up in 29 games for IF Björklöven, finishing the year with two goals and eight points. Modest numbers, maybe — but solid for a rookie defenseman playing in Sweden's second-tier league, especially one adjusting to the pace and physicality of the pro game.
The
Winnipeg Jets
took him 37th overall, making him their first pick of the 2024 draft. At 6'1' and 196 pounds, Freij combines a strong frame with standout skating. His edge work and balance allow him to stay composed under pressure and make smooth exits out of the zone. Offensively, he's known for his passing instincts and transition play — and he's starting to show growth on the defensive side, too.
Next season, he's moving up to the SHL with Timrå IK, where he'll face tougher competition and faster decision-making.
It's a big step, but exactly the kind of environment that could sharpen his game. The SHL is a league where mistakes get exposed quickly, and Freij will have to adjust on the fly to stay impactful.
Freij didn't make Sweden's World Junior team last season, but that might change this year. With several top names aging out, there's room for new faces — and Freij seems ready to step in.
He's still at least a couple of years from pushing for a Jets roster spot, but everything's trending in the right direction. A year or two in the SHL, then likely a move to the AHL with Manitoba — it's a familiar path for Jets prospects. And if Freij keeps checking boxes like he did this season, his name might come up in Winnipeg sooner than expected.

NHL Trade Rumors: Hurricanes emerge as frontrunner for Nikolaj Ehlers as Kings and Sharks circle Jets winger

Nikolaj Ehlers is set to test free agency on July 1 (Image via AP) As NHL free agency approaches, Winnipeg Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after names on the market. After 10 seasons in Manitoba, the Danish forward has reportedly told the Jets he intends to test free agency on July 1—news that has sparked interest from multiple franchises across the league. Carolina Hurricanes viewed as frontrunner among teams interested in Ehlers NHL trade rumors are swirling as Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers prepares to hit free agency, drawing serious interest from contenders like the Hurricanes, Kings, and Sharks ahead of July 1. 'Hearing Nikolaj Ehlers has informed the Jets he will go to free agency on July 1. Door not closed on Manitoba, but will test the market,' tweeted NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on Thursday. — FriedgeHNIC (@FriedgeHNIC) While the Winnipeg Jets are still hoping to retain the skilled winger, it's clear other teams are preparing aggressive pitches. Among them, the Carolina Hurricanes—valued at $1.25 billion by Forbes—are reportedly 'very serious' about signing Ehlers, according to Friedman, who spoke during Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer. 'I think there are definitely some things in motion,' Friedman said. 'I've heard Carolina is very serious about Ehlers, but I also think he could end up just about anywhere. That's what's going to make this a really interesting situation — there are a lot of teams poking around, and they all seem to have slightly different priorities.' Kings and Sharks could shape Ehlers' next chapter, but fit varies by team Beyond Carolina, both the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks have emerged as potential suitors. The Kings are exploring multiple roster moves, while the Sharks, facing pressure to reach the salary cap floor, could view Ehlers as a strategic addition despite their ongoing rebuild. 'Some teams are looking at shorter-term fits,' Friedman noted. 'Then you've got teams like San Jose who need to hit the cap floor. So, Ehlers could have multiple types of suitors. ... I've also heard L.A. has a few irons in the fire.' Elliotte Friedman & Bob Stauffer on Evander Kane trade, free agency, & NHL Entry Draft on Oilers Now Jets still hoping to make their case for long-term loyalty Despite Ehlers' intention to explore options, Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff hasn't given up hope. He emphasized the team's long-standing relationship with Ehlers, who was drafted by the Jets and has been a consistent top-six forward. 'Nikolaj has been a player that has grown up in our organization,' Cheveldayoff said. 'Drafted, developed him, we'll put our best foot forward with him to try to make our case to be a unique Jet-for-life-type player.'
