21-year-old missing for months possibly spotted on doorbell cam, WA family says

Miami Herald2 days ago
A 21-year-old man with autism may have been spotted on a doorbell camera months after he vanished from his Washington home, his family said.
The front door security camera footage was captured June 23 in Kirkland, according to the Help Us Find Jonathan Hoang Facebook page.
Hoang was last seen at about 7:30 p.m. March 30 in Arlington, McClatchy News reported from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.
He left his home without his iPad or jacket, which was described as being 'very unusual,' deputies said in a May news release.
Despite extensive search efforts following his disappearance, Hoang hasn't been seen in three months.
Then a resident in Kirkland, a nearly 45-mile drive south from Arlington, recorded a person on their doorbell camera June 23 that appeared to look like Hoang, the group said.
The footage was taken at a home on a street with a very similar name as Hoang's home address, the group said.
'We think he may have been trying to return,' the group said.
The page said Hoang was also seen on other home cameras, and the sightings were reported to authorities.
'The detective assigned to this case is currently reviewing the information regarding the possible sighting of Jonathan Hoang, as is standard procedure for any tip received,' a spokesperson for the sheriff's office told McClatchy News by email July 1.
A community search is now being organized for July 2.
If anyone thinks they see Hoang, they should call 911 immediately, take a photo or video of him and try to talk to him.

Man hid cameras at home and shared nude videos of female roommate, FL cops say

A woman found out her boyfriend used hidden cameras stashed in their home to take years worth of nude photos and videos of their female roommate and share them with others, Florida authorities said. David Van Moorsel, a 28-year-old personal trainer, is now facing over 100 felony charges, including 40 counts of digital voyeurism, 40 counts of unlawful use of a two-way communication device and 30 counts of possession of child pornography, the Volusia Sheriff's Office announced July 2. The investigation began when Van Moorsel's then-girlfriend started to suspect he was cheating on her and went through his phone, deputies with the Volusia Sheriff's Office wrote in an arrest affidavit. She came across 'compromising' images and videos of their female roommate — her best friend — as well as a wireless camera in the bathroom, according to deputies. She confronted him, but he told her he was being blackmailed and said he would delete all the images, deputies said. She didn't take action at that point, but about seven months later, she became suspicious again and logged into his account on the messaging application Telegram, where she discovered he had been sending videos of her best friend in the shower, according to deputies. She broke up with him, and when she went searching for proof he was still recording their roommate, she found a hidden camera on a bookshelf in the roommate's bedroom, deputies said. According to investigators, Van Moorsel took over 109 videos of the woman over the course of two years and shared content of her on Snapchat and Telegram, including videos of him sexually assaulting her in her sleep, deputies said. Some of these sex offenses occurred in Santa Rosa County, a detective said. When investigators searched his devices, they said they also found 'extensive amounts' of child pornography. Van Moorsel, who worked as a personal trainer at Gold's Gym in Daytona Beach, took videos of women exercising there, but he did so in public spaces and therefore didn't violate any laws, deputies said. Law enforcement went to speak to him at work and arrested him. 'Gold's Gym Daytona Beach is a local, family owned-and operated business, and after learning of the shocking charges against trainer David Lee Van Moorsel, we immediately terminated his employment and alerted security that he is banned from our property,' the gym said in a statement shared with McClatchy News. 'While his alleged illegal actions do not involve the gym or our members, they go against our most deeply held values as longstanding members of the Daytona Beach community,' Gold's Gym said. According to the sheriff's office, Van Moorsel was previously convicted of sexual assault against a 13-year-old girl in Montana. He told deputies he had to take the videos of his roommate because someone online was threatening to expose his criminal history to her and his girlfriend, according to the arrest affidavit.

Doctor in training stole fentanyl meant for children at WA hospital, feds say

A 35-year-old doctor in training is accused of stealing fentanyl from children at a Washington hospital, federal officials said. Andrew Voegel-Podadera was charged with two counts of acquiring a controlled substance by misrepresentation, fraud, deception and subterfuge, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said in a July 1 news release. Voegel-Podadera, an anesthesiologist resident, told investigators he stole medication from both children and adult patients over the course of a year, and would sometimes administer it intravenously while working, authorities said in a federal complaint. 'Drug addiction spares no one. It can impact anyone. And the literature, in particular, shows greater incidents of drug addiction among medical practitioners than other segments of society because of their exposure and access,' his attorney, Ronald J. Friedman, told McClatchy News by phone July 2. 'Dr. Voegel is responding to the matter as best as he can. He's enrolling in a Washington Physicians Health Program in Washington state designed to help medical professionals stabilize and treat their addiction.' An investigation into Voegel-Podadera was prompted Dec. 27, when a doctor he was working under at the Seattle Children's Hospital suspected he was 'diverting controlled substances,' a special agent said in the complaint. That day, Voegel-Podadera treated three children at the hospital, authorities said. A record of the medication given to those patients said he administered fentanyl and hydromorphone — both potent and powerful narcotics, the agent said. His records indicated there was wastage in the syringes, yet when the hospital tested them it found nothing but saline solution, according to the complaint. The physician also suspected Voegel-Podadera was working while under the influence of drugs because of his behavior and 'unexplained delays and absences from the operating room,' officials said in the DEA release. During the investigation, Voegel-Podadera told authorities he had been stealing medicine since January 2024 while on rotations at the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center, prosecutors said. He told authorities he would draw up the medication, take some and give some to patients, the special agent said. He is accused of stealing fentanyl, remifentanil, sufentanil and hydromorphone, among other medications, prosecutors said. The DEA suspended Voegel-Podadera's prescribing abilities June 12, and he was arrested June 24. 'Diverting medicine away from infant patients is despicable, doubly so if the person involved is a doctor,' David F. Reames, special agent in charge for the DEA Seattle Field Division, said in the news release.

Man kicks in woman's door, fires 13 shots and kills her, New Mexico officials say

A man kicked in a woman's door and fatally shot her, and now he's heading to prison, New Mexico officials said. Adrian Chavez, 29, was ordered to serve 30 years behind bars in Kelsey Cash's 2022 killing, according to officials. The sentence came after a jury convicted Chavez earlier this year of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence and aggravated burglary, the Ninth Judicial District Attorney's Office said in a June 26 news release. McClatchy News reached out to his attorney June 30 and was awaiting a response. Chavez and Cash had been in an on-off relationship that was volatile, prosecutors said. They had a child together, KRQE reported. Chavez showed up to Cash's apartment March 23, 2022, and kicked in the door, according to prosecutors. He 'fired 13 rounds at Cash, fatally wounding her,' prosecutors said. Chavez had called her numerous times that evening 'and was the last person to speak with her before her death,' prosecutors said. Security footage captured him showing up to her apartment 'in a black Dodge Charger and fleeing the scene minutes after a 911 call was placed,' according to prosecutors, who said an eyewitness testified that the shooter 'fled in the same black Charger seen on surveillance.' Cash, from Clovis, was 28 when she died, according to an online obituary. She earned an esthetician license and loved to be with her daughter 'and make as many memories as possible,' the obituary said, adding that she also liked to 'binge watch her favorite TV shows, listen to her rap music and have (a) great time with her best friends.' The mom 'was loved by so many and she touched each person that came across her path,' the obituary said. In the news release, Ninth Judicial District Attorney Quentin Ray said, 'this sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and the enduring pain caused by the loss of Kelsey Cash. We hope this verdict brings a measure of justice to her family and loved ones.' Clovis is about a 220-mile drive southeast from Albuquerque.
