Man with Autism, Who Left Home Months Ago Without Phone or Jacket, Possibly Seen on Doorbell Camera, Family Says

Jonathan Hoang may have been spotted months after he vanished from his Washington home The 21-year-old man's family said they believe he was recently seen on a doorbell camera about 40 miles away from where he disappeared in late March Police ended search efforts for Hoang in AprilA man with autism may have been spotted on a doorbell camera months after he vanished from his Washington home, according to his family. Jonathan Hoang was last seen in Arlington at around 7:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, March 30, the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) previously said in a news release. Late last month, Hoang's family said in a post shared on the "Help Us Find Jonathan Hoang" Facebook page that they believe the 21-year-old was recently spotted in front door security camera footage. Alongside screenshots of the video footage captured of who is believed to be Hoang, the family wrote, "This potential sighting was on NE 114th Lane [in] Kirkland," referring to an area over 40 miles away from Arlington. "Please feel free to share this information in all community groups and pages in the Kirkland and surrounding areas," the man's loved ones continued. The SCSO said in its prior news release that a relative of Hoang's said they possibly heard him leave the home around 5:30 a.m. on Monday, March 31, but it may have occurred earlier. He was reported missing later that same day. 'Jonathan has autism and he left the house without his cell phone and without a jacket,' authorities said. 'He left with his Wi-Fi-only iPad; it does not have cellular data.' A search for Hoang eventually began, and it later culminated with about 150 volunteers, ground teams, K-9 units, drones and the agency's helicopter involved. Police said "more than 4,000 man-hours were dedicated to the search, which spanned six days." The search was eventually suspended, and police said they would "continue to do periodic checks in the area and will follow up on all leads.' They added that Hoang's cell phone contained "nothing of evidentiary value." The sheriff's office said in its prior statement that Hoang is high functioning and takes public transit with his job coach and "has been working with his adult transitions program to gain skills for a job in Everett.' Speaking with NBC affiliate KING, Hoang's family said he may have trouble finding his way back home, as he has difficulty with problem-solving and shuts down during stressful situations. The man's loved ones have since set up their own search efforts, and a GoFundMe has been established for the family to aid them as they continue to try and find Hoang. Hoang's family did not respond to PEOPLE's request for an update. The SCSO asked anyone who has seen Hoang or has information tied to his whereabouts to immediately call 911. Eerie sight captured on doorbell cam in hunt for vulnerable man with autism who's been missing since March

An eerie doorbell camera sighting has reignited hope in the search for an autistic man who has been missing since March. Jonathan Hoang, 21, vanished from his home in Arlington, Washington sparking a massive manhunt. Now footage recorded on June 23 has captured a young man resembling Jonathan walking through a residential neighborhood 44 miles away. 'We still haven't been able to grasp the reality of it,' Jonathan's father, Thao Hoang, told KOMO news. 'Every day we wake up and just wonder where we are and where Jonathan is.' Jonathan, who has the mental capacity of an 8 or 9-year-old, was last seen around 7:30 p.m. on March 30 at his family's home, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office. The Washington State Patrol designated him an endangered missing person. At the time, he was reportedly wearing a green polo shirt, khaki pants, and his mother's black slip-on shoes. He left without his cellphone or jacket, carrying only his iPad, which does not have cellular data. 'The investigator was frank with us,' said Thao Hoang. 'He said that if he's lost out here without his jacket, the window of survivability decreases every day.' His family said it is highly unusual for him to leave the house without letting someone know. 'Whenever he goes on walks, he'll come and ask if it's okay to go on a walk and we say that's fine, but he never leaves without saying something,' they told KOMO News. Although Jonathan is verbal and capable of holding a conversation, his family fears he may struggle to retain crucial information. 'We try to drill him with phone numbers and addresses and things like that, he'll remember short term but those details are not his strong point,' they said. Search and rescue teams from multiple counties scoured the area in the days following his disappearance, deploying drones, K-9 units, helicopters, and ground crews. But no trace of Jonathan was found. 'There's nothing that shows he walked to the woods, it shows him go up the steps and out to the road but that's his typical walking route,' the family said. 'The facts are very sketchy in that he was here late Sunday past 7:30 and then never seen again. The family is hopeful the man caught on camera last month may finally lead them to their son. They say the person not only resembles Jonathan, but shares his familiar mannerisms. 'Just looking at it, how he interacts, really resonates with us, and if we didn't know any better, if he's in front of a house and sees through our Ring video, we would say, "That's Jonathan outside,"' Thao Hoang added. The family is rallying volunteers to canvass the area and urging residents to check their surveillance cameras, and their backyards, sheds, and garages, for any sign of the missing man. 'He should respond to his name, so if you see someone that resembles Jonathan, you should call 911, you should approach him and ask, "Are you Jonathan?" and he should be able to self-identify,' his sister, Irene Fister said. She noted that Jonathan has a mole on his right forearm and two small moles on his face, distinct features that could help confirm his identity. The family is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to Jonathan's safe return. Local police have confirmed they're reviewing the footage and are working closely with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office to follow up on any leads.

21-year-old missing for months possibly spotted on doorbell cam, WA family says

A 21-year-old man with autism may have been spotted on a doorbell camera months after he vanished from his Washington home, his family said. The front door security camera footage was captured June 23 in Kirkland, according to the Help Us Find Jonathan Hoang Facebook page. Hoang was last seen at about 7:30 p.m. March 30 in Arlington, McClatchy News reported from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office. He left his home without his iPad or jacket, which was described as being 'very unusual,' deputies said in a May news release. Despite extensive search efforts following his disappearance, Hoang hasn't been seen in three months. Then a resident in Kirkland, a nearly 45-mile drive south from Arlington, recorded a person on their doorbell camera June 23 that appeared to look like Hoang, the group said. The footage was taken at a home on a street with a very similar name as Hoang's home address, the group said. 'We think he may have been trying to return,' the group said. The page said Hoang was also seen on other home cameras, and the sightings were reported to authorities. 'The detective assigned to this case is currently reviewing the information regarding the possible sighting of Jonathan Hoang, as is standard procedure for any tip received,' a spokesperson for the sheriff's office told McClatchy News by email July 1. A community search is now being organized for July 2. If anyone thinks they see Hoang, they should call 911 immediately, take a photo or video of him and try to talk to him.

21-year-old's disappearance ‘indescribably painful,' WA family says. Search ends

The search for a missing 21-year-old man with autism has ended 10 days after he vanished from his Washington home, deputies said. Jonathan Hoang was last seen at about 7:30 p.m. March 30 in Arlington, the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post. 'Each day he's been missing has been indescribably painful for our family. He is gentle, kind, funny, and so loved. Please help us find him,' his family wrote on a Facebook page dedicated to finding him. He was reported the day after he was last seen, deputies said, and it's believed he left the home with his iPad but not his phone or jacket. Search teams quickly spread out to find him using ground teams, police dogs, drones and helicopters, deputies said in an earlier post. They looked for him for more than 4,000 hours over the course of six days and couldn't find any trace of him, deputies said. His cellphone and computer were also analyzed but 'nothing of evidentiary value was found,' deputies said. Search efforts have since been called off. Deputies said search teams will do 'periodic checks in the area' and follow up on leads. There is no evidence of foul play or evidence he was taken against his will, deputies said. His family said they do not know what Hoang was wearing when he disappeared. Deputies said he is verbal, can have conversations with people and knows the names of his immediate family. But they say he struggles to problem-solve and does not have the skills to look for help. 'If lost, he likely doesn't know to put himself in a visible space for searchers. He will not be able to relay his own address or phone numbers,' deputies said. Hoang takes a bus to school and to return home, but he does not use public transportation, his father commented on Facebook.
