Flipping heck: tech giant wants to upsize your phone

Perth Now09-07-2025
One of the world's largest smartphone makers will bet on bigger screens, smaller forms and artificially intelligent features to convince Aussies to upgrade the contents of their pockets.
But the more advanced devices will come at a greater cost when they launch on August 1 and experts warn competitors are finally paying more attention to the once niche market.
Samsung unveiled its latest folding smartphones in New York early on Thursday, including the Galaxy Z Fold7 that will feature an eight-inch (20cm) fold-out screen for the first time and Google AI features that use its camera to 'see'.
The South Korean tech giant also showed off two versions of its folding Flip phone, including a discounted model.
Increasing the size of the screens up front and inside the company's top model foldable came in response to customer demand, Samsung Australia mobile experience head Eric Chou said, along with a slimmer body closer to a standard phone in size.
"This is really built for customers who have been loyal, have been using a foldable form factor and can provide us with insights," he told AAP.
"Effectively, they want a bigger screen (and) better camera, without compromising the fact that it is foldable."
The big-screen phone will also be significantly slimmer than its predecessor at 8.9mm when folded, will be 24 grams lighter and add a 200-megapixel camera, though it will also command up to $250 more, with its top model priced at $3549.
The smaller Z Flip7, from $1799, will add larger screens up front and inside, and a larger battery.
Both folding phones would add AI features, Mr Chou said, including photo-editing and language tools as well as access to Google's Gemini Live AI assistant that can use the phones' cameras for additional information.
"Gemini Live is able to see what you see and is able to see what's on screen and provide contextual recommendations," he said.
"Having that (AI) multimodal agent that's been built in, essentially... you can interact with the device and get the things you need through voice and the camera."
Despite being one of the first companies to release a folding phone in 2019, Samsung faces significant competition from rivals including Motorola, Huawei and Google, which released a foldable phone with an eight-inch screen in Australia last year.
Research from Future Market Insights predicts the folding phone market will grow by 26 per cent between 2025 and 2035, with annual growth of more than seven per cent in Australia.
But increasing the size and durability of folding screens and reducing the size of the devices would be vital to achieving that growth, Telsyte managing director Foad Fadaghi said.
"Consumers are going to be spoilt for choice when it comes to the form factor of their next handset," he told AAP.
"The question is whether the foldable phone will stick for them, whether or not people buy it and continue to buy them rather than switch back to the standard phone format."

Jetstar launches surprise 24-hour sale to celebrate first flight from Gold Coast to Bali

Jetstar has launched new direct flights to Bali, making it easier and more affordable for Aussies to travel to the popular holiday destination for as little as $215 one-way. The low-cost airline's newest route will take off for the first time on Friday evening, kicking off its three-times-a-week, non-stop schedule from the Gold Coast to Denpasar. It marks Jetstar's first non-stop service between Bali and the Gold Coast and is being celebrated with a 24-hour flash sale. Two of Jetstar's newest Airbus A320neo aircraft will now permanently be based at Coolangatta, extending the airline's footprint in Queensland. Jetstar said the aircraft are quieter, more fuel efficient, and part of its strategy to meet booming demand for overseas travel. The new Bali service will inject more than 58,000 extra travellers into the local airport each year, bolstering the Gold Coast's reputation as an international gateway, according to Jetstar. 'We've seen strong demand from customers living on the Gold Coast for direct international travel options,' said Jetstar executive manager customers Jenn Armor in a statement. 'It's clear Australians just can't get enough of Bali ... This new route allows customers to take off more for less.' Queensland Airports Ltd chief commercial officer Adam Rowe calling the investment in the Gold Coast 'a welcome boost for both leisure and local economies'. The route would also benefit travellers from Northern NSW, he added. 'More than 70,000 people travel between the two destinations each year.' The Bali route is the latest in a string of new destinations announced by Jetstar as part of its June expansion from the Gold Coast, which includes services to Darwin, Hamilton and Dunedin. Flight days: To mark the launch, the airline has released $215 one-way fares as part of a 24-hour flash sale, available until 10am AEST Saturday or until sold out.

Trump ramps up trade war with Canada over Palestine as deadline looms

US President Donald Trump intensified his trade war with Canada a day before his August 1 deadline for a tariff agreement, saying it will be 'very hard' to make a deal with Canada after it gave its support to Palestinian statehood. Trump is set to impose a 35 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement if the two countries do not reach an agreement by the deadline. 'Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them,' Trump said on Truth Social. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney previously said tariff negotiations with Washington had been constructive, but the talks may not conclude by the deadline. Talks between the two countries were at an intense phase, he added, but a deal that would remove all US tariffs was unlikely. President Donald Trump will impose a hefty tariff on Canadian goods there's no deal by August 1. Credit: AAP Meanwhile, the global tariff regime is facing a crucial court challenge. From 2am Friday (AEST), eleven judges in Washington DC will hear arguments from the Trump administration and two small businesses who say that many of his import duties are illegal. The businesses sued the president over his enacting the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977. All of the White House's tariffs on major trading partners have been enacted under that law. Canada is the second-largest US trading partner after Mexico, and the largest buyer of US exports. It bought $US350 billion ($540b) of US goods last year and exported $US413b to the US, according to US Census Bureau data. Canada is also the top supplier of steel and aluminium to the United States, and faces tariffs on both metals as well as on vehicle exports. In June, Carney's government scrapped a planned digital services tax targeting US technology firms after Trump abruptly called off trade talks saying the tax was a 'blatant attack'. Carney followed France and Britain as he said on Wednesday that his country was planning to recognise the State of Palestine at a meeting of the United Nations in September. In announcing the decision, Carney spoke of the reality on the ground, including starvation in Gaza. 'Canada condemns the fact that the Israeli government has allowed a catastrophe to unfold in Gaza,' he said. Israel and the United States, Israel's closest ally, both rejected Carney's comments. Carney's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's post.
