Banned driver 'impulsively' decided to drive to work, court told
John Fitzgerald, 36, from Walton, near Brampton, was given a 30-month disqualification for driving dangerously in August of 2023 and told he will remain banned until he passes an extended driving test.
He was also given a ten month jail term.
His formal ban was also scheduled to remain in force until at least May of next year, the court heard..
But on February 6 police spotted him at the wheel of a black Audi A3 as he drove along Brampton Road in Carlisle.
'The driver was stopped and admitted straight away that he was disqualified,' prosecutor Scott Parker told the city's Rickergate court. The defendant admitted the offence as well as driving while not insured.

Sean Harkin, defending, told the court: 'He is working man as a mechanic, and usually cycles to his place of work. This was a lapse of judgement.
"He was keen to impress his employer.
'He was needed at work but would have struggled to get there, so he made the impulsive decision to drive.
'He knows that orders of the court must be respected and that must be a priority going forward.
'He has no relevant convictions. It was surprising that the author of the pre-sentence report said that she thinks this was not the first time he had done this. He is no longer on drink or drugs.
'He is also in employment and in a stable relationship.'
Deputy District Judge Andrew Teate noted that the defendant had the 'good sense' to plead guilty to the offence at the earliest opportunity.
But the judge said: 'When the court tells you that you should not drive, you are not to drive. It's disappointing that you find yourself back before the court, having made the decision to drive.
'You will have to pass an extended driving test before you get back on the road. These matters are extremely serious.'
The District Judge imposed a 12-month community order which will include 15 days of rehabilitation. He must also pay £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £114.
In addition, the judge added a further three months to the defendant's existing driving ban. Deputy District Judge Teate warned: 'For a second time offence, it is likely you would be sent to custody.'

It was an unlikely backdrop for a protest - a large roundabout on the outskirts of Norwich. But behind the trees flanking one of the carriageways was the reason hundreds had come - another hotel being used to house asylum seekers. Just as towns and cities around the country have seen protests in recent days, most prominently in Epping in Essex where at least 18 arrests have been made, this time the focus was the Brook Hotel. It started peacefully - bar the beeping of horns of passing cars and the chants from protesters on both sides. But in a flash, it all changed. Witnesses say one of the pro-immigration protesters had approached the much larger group wearing a balaclava and in seconds the pent-up fury spilt over as an angry crowd surged towards the police, shouting and swearing. Some tried and failed to hold back the furious crowd urging peace as a small group of police and protesters rolled down a verge, while backup officers emerged from a side road. But as quickly as it started, it was all over - an intense five minutes that seemed to take the wind out of their anger. Trying to find anyone willing to speak was almost impossible: "We don't talk to the mainstream media," a common phrase. But David Beane, from nearby Costessey, a veteran and the father of an eight-year-old boy, had clear views he wanted to share. "I know homeless people from the forces. I got out of the force, no dental treatment, I can't get a doctors. They get everything," he said. "I'm all up for immigrants coming, but sign the paperwork. You show who you are, you come in, you abide by our laws." It was David's first time at a protest. Another local man attending was Glen. "They're in there, free rent, free everything," he said. There seems to be no end in sight to the current spate of disruption.

Police close key Merseyside roads after multi-car crash
A number of cars were involved in a major crash on a Merseyside road. Police received reports of the multi-car pile-up at around 2.45pm today (Saturday). Merseyside Police said the crash happened at the junction of Woolfall Heath Avenue and Seth Powell Way in Stockbridge Village. Officers attended the scene and were forced to put road closures in place as investigations into what had happened were carried out. The force is now appealing for information from members of the public who may have witnessed the crash. A police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for information following a reported road traffic collision in Stockbridge Village this afternoon, Saturday 26 July. "At around 2.45pm we received a report that a number of cars were involved in a collision at the junction of Woolfall Heath Avenue and Seth Powell Way." Images and footage shared with the ECHO showed a number of police vehicles in place at the junction where the crash happened. One of the vehicles in the footage is a mobile police station unit, formed out of a police van. Signs and cones can be seen in the area indicating a road closure. The police statement did not include details of whether anyone was injured. Man seriously injured after Handsworth stabbing as attackers still on run
A man was seriously injured following a stabbing in the city. It happened in Gibson Road, Handsworth, just after 3am today, July 26. The victim was found with serious injuries before being rushed to hospital.
