'Rare' chance to hear live performance of Erik Satie composition in Carlisle
A PERFORMANCE of the chamber cantata 'Socrate', released in 1919 by the French composer and pianist Erik Satie, will take place in Carlisle. The work, a 'moving reflection on the life and death of the ancient Greek philosopher', will take place at the Fratry beside the Cathedral from 12.30pm to 1.30pm on Tuesday, July 1. This will be 100 years to the day since Satie's death. Satie is perhaps bet known for his famous piano compositions including Trois Gymnopédies and the Gnossiennes. His other works are described as 'undeservedly underperformed' by the concert organisers, making this a rare opportunity to hear Socrate live. The cantata will be performed by three Cumbria-based singers Fiona Weakley, Anne-Marie Kerr and Catherine St Ville, alongside accompanist David T Shingler. Entry to the concert is complimentary but the organisers encourage contributions during the collection at the end of each performance to support the artists and the Cathedral.

Meet the Cumbrian teen forging a career in civil engineering
A Cumbrian teenager who gave up his weekends and school holidays for work experience is forging a career path as a civil engineer. Ryan Reid, 19, from Brampton, joined Carlisle-based Peacock Precision Services straight from school and is now working towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in civil engineering, having already completed an Ordinary National Certificate (ONC) after three years of study. The young engineer has already worked on major projects including the Carlisle Southern Link Road and the Hope Valley Rail Line. Mr Reid is now working towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in civil engineering (Image: Supplied) Mr Reid said: "Working at Peacock Precision is great, and I couldn't think of doing anything else if I'm honest. "I like the challenge of completing a variety of jobs, and every day is a learning day." He said he particularly enjoys being out on-site and interacting with people from different trades. Mr Reid also credited Kieron Peacock, founder and owner of Peacock Precision, with supporting his growth in the industry. He said: "I owe Kieron a lot for giving me the opportunity and taking a chance on me, so I try to do my best by him on every job." Mr Reid first joined the company as a trainee civil engineer after impressing Mr Peacock with his enthusiasm and commitment during work experience placements at just 15 years old. Mr Peacock said: "From the very beginning, Ryan stood out as someone with a real passion for the work and a willingness to learn. "There are not many kids at the age of 15 who would volunteer to spend their spare time working, but that shows Ryan's strong determination to go far in the industry. "He has already developed into a mature, reliable and valued member of the team, and we're proud to support him as he continues to grow in his career." Peacock Precision Services, established in Carlisle in 2018, is a specialist engineering business operating across the UK in sectors including highways, housing, rail, public sector, and retail. Mr Reid's journey into civil engineering began through work experience placements during weekends and school holidays, which he continued alongside his studies at Durham College. His blend of practical skills, determination, and academic achievement has set him apart, earning praise from colleagues and leadership alike. As he works towards his NVQ, Mr Reid is expected to continue making an impact on projects across the region and beyond.

Carlisle United season ticket sales reach impressive landmark
Carlisle United have beaten last year's season ticket sales total already. The Blues have announced that they have surpassed their overall 2024/25 figure with more than a month to go until the new campaign. Advertisement The revelation underlines the remarkable backing that continues to be given by supporters in spite of United's fall into the National League. The show of support by the Blue Army will be a major boost to Mark Hughes and his team as they prepare for the 2025/26 campaign in the fifth tier. Carlisle announced on Friday afternoon that they had gone past last season's total of 3,221 season tickets. At the time of their announcement, they had sold 3,236. It comes as the Cumbrians prepare to play in the fifth tier for only the second time in their history, after back-to-back relegations. United have been installed as bookies' favourites for the National League title as they look to bounce back to the EFL at the first attempt. Advertisement Hughes, after being confirmed as head coach for the new campaign, has so far made five new signings as he looks to reshape his side. United have also made behind-the-scenes changes this summer, with Marc Tierney coming in as head of football operations and Martin Foyle as head of recruitment, while the club's owners, the Piatak family, have drafted in Paul Hart as an advisor to the board. Fans have their say on new Carlisle United home kit Heading out of the club this summer have been previous head of recruitment Greg Abbott and sporting director Rob Clarkson. Carlisle will discover their fixtures for the league campaign on Saturday, July 9 - a month before the big kick-off on Saturday, August 9. Advertisement Their programme of six pre-season friendlies gets under way with a behind-closed-doors trip to Motherwell on Tuesday, July 8. Carlisle recorded an impressive average home crowd of 7,425 in the league last season in spite of their poor campaign. It was their second-highest average home gate for 17 years. The only previous time Carlisle played in the fifth tier, meanwhile, their average attendance was 5,513 in the 2004/05 season.

Fans have their say on new Carlisle United home kit
The new shirt on display in the Blues Store (Image: News & Star) Carlisle United fans have been having their say on the Blues' new home kit. The Cumbrians unveiled the new blue, red and white striped design on Wednesday - and it has certainly provoked plenty of opinion. Advertisement Here's a range of views from supporters, who shared their thoughts with the News & Star on social media... I think it's epic and hopefully one we remember for all the right reasons (@MarkWard18) I quite like it! Certainly better than the home kit for the last couple of one has a bit of soul (@Keano1981) Top class (@carlisletom) I really like it, but it won't be for everyone (@Tomw0892) I like it but I know it's gonna be like Marmite! (@guy_moffat) Love it! (@KyleDixon30) I like it! Mine is purchased (@Dean19921928) Carlisle United reveal new home kit I like it, it's distinctive and I prefer the deckchair stripes to some of the more abstract designs we've had. It should also shift plenty of associated merchandise (@mlgraham73) Advertisement It's a thing of beauty. I love the creativity. Our kits are so much better than the boring generic ones (@northumbrian_) If it's worn by a winning team I don't mind. Mine is in the post (@adydent67) I thought we would move away from the toothpaste (@BruceVander) Too much red for me. I'm hoping it will look better in real life. The quality looks good and I quite like the fox watermark in the red material (@JHallHDI) Good strip to get promoted in (@RobertPorthous1) The new design has divided opinion amongst fans (Image: News & Star) I like it but would have preferred that as the away kit and a simple classic blue as the home kit - more Aqua Fresh than Aqua Pura! I am old though. (@BackoSkiddaw) Advertisement Horrendous. That's not a Carlisle shirt for me. Way too much red and white, the back looks half finished and the design is a shocker. Have we ever had a striped home shirt before? (@ReiverPhil) Leaked away kit is much better, not the biggest fan of the home kit (@andrewhoddie) Fans queue in the rain to buy new Carlisle United home kit Yeah, it's ok, certainly distinctive but will get toothpaste comments no doubt. Regarding the away kit, they don't seem to want to move away from last year's effort very much (@Rich_W27) It's not to everyone's taste but it won't matter if we're winning matches and topping the league. I really like it (@karl72465) Advertisement Awful (@granttheone) If whomever had kept it simple? Blue and white deckchair would have been epic, they just had to put the red in and made it a mess (again) (@bruntonblue10) Too much red not enough blue. One of the worst strips for years imho (@frostie_) If the stripes went down the back and if the shorts were white that could've been unbelievable I think (Hayden McGarel) I like it (Lee Rotherham) It will sell but not for me. Can't wait until we get a blue strip again. (Peter Scholes( I think it's mint (Matthew Roberts) Like it. Purchased (David Rigg) Too many stripes, bad for the eyes (Margaret Wright) Advertisement It's like the old deck chair away kit only different colour. Horrible! (Christine Young) Absolute shocker (Brian Johnstone) I think it's a grower. I like it better now than when it was leaked a couple of days ago. (Matt Dickinsone) It's distinctive unlike any other club's top. Let's make it a memorable season in it. (Paul Hal Irving) Not for me doesn't really matter what they wear as long as they get promoted (Mally Poskett) It's very marmite. I dislike it now but by the end of the season it'll have grown on me. (@Libraise) As classy as a hot dog (Callum McLennan) The kits are on sale in the Blues Store and online (Image: News & Star) Advertisement Where did the red come from? I don't like it (David Drinkald) Like it (Graeme Stead) Not a fan prefer traditional blue shirt but as long as we win I don't care (Phil Rickerby) Wouldn't be happy as the sponsor as their name almost disappears in it but I rather like it (Andrew Lapping) Way too much red! (Gary Parkin) Wouldn't matter what the shirt was like there's always the moaners lol (Steven Shaw) Doesn't really matter, we all love our club so will still buy it anyway (Adrian McGonigle)
