Colombian authorities arrest alleged leader of Italian mafia in Latin America
Police identified the suspect as Giuseppe Palermo, also known as 'Peppe,' an Italian who was wanted under an Interpol red notice, which called for his arrest in 196 countries.
He was apprehended on the street in Colombia's capital Bogota during a coordinated operation between Colombian, Italian and British authorities, as well as Europol, the European Union's law enforcement agency, according to an official report.
Palermo is believed to be part of 'one of the most tightly knit cells' of the 'ndrangheta mafia, said Carlos Fernando Triana, head of the Colombian police, in a message posted on X.
The 'ndrangheta, one of Italy's most powerful and secretive criminal organizations, has extended its influence abroad and is widely accused of importing cocaine into Europe.
The suspect 'not only led the purchase of large shipments of cocaine in Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador, but also controlled the maritime and land routes used to transport the drugs to European markets,' Triana added.
Illegal cocaine production reached 3,708 tons in 2023, an increase of nearly 34 percent from the previous year, driven mainly by the expansion of coca leaf cultivation in Colombia, according to the United Nations.

AMMAN: Jordan and the EU have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at bolstering efforts to combat organized crime and terrorism across borders, the Jordan News Agency reported. The working arrangements were signed between Jordan's Public Security Directorate and the EU Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, or Europol, on Thursday. The agreement establishes a legal framework to support joint action in fighting serious and organized crime, as well as terrorism, by facilitating cooperation and the exchange of non-personal information between Europol and Jordanian law enforcement agencies. According to a statement from the PSD, the agreement will allow both parties to coordinate on a range of issues, including migrant smuggling, drug trafficking, money laundering, and weapons smuggling. Under the deal, Jordan and the EU will share specialized expertise, overall situation reports, and the results of strategic analyzes. The agreement also enables participation in joint training initiatives, and includes provisions for advice and support in individual criminal investigations. To streamline collaboration, the PSD will appoint a national contact point responsible for liaising with Europol and coordinating efforts between Jordanian agencies and their European counterparts. The arrangements also allow for the potential appointment of a Europol liaison officer to be stationed in Jordan, joining a global network of law enforcement representatives from more than 50 countries. With the agreement in force, the EU and Jordan are expected to significantly strengthen their cooperation in addressing pressing regional and international security challenges. The arrangements represent 'a pivotal step' in joint efforts to address the security threats affecting the EU, its member states, and Jordan, said Catherine De Bolle, executive director of Europol. She said the partnership 'embodies mutual trust and understanding in the law enforcement area,' paving the way for closer cooperation to achieve security within the EU and across the Middle East.

US, Europe sound alarm over Hezbollah's efforts to expand overseas footprint
The United States and Europol led a meeting this week with representatives from 30 governments to address efforts to counter Hezbollah's international fundraising networks and warn that the group remains a dangerous threat. The State Department, Justice Department, and Europol convened the 14th meeting of the Law Enforcement Coordination Group (LECG) on July 9–10 to focus on Hezbollah's terrorist and illicit activities. The US Treasury Department and the National Counterterrorism Center also participated. Despite suffering significant setbacks over the past year during its war with Israel -- including the deaths of its longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah, his successor, and much of the group's senior leadership -- the LECG said Hezbollah continues to seek ways to maintain and grow its overseas operations. The group retains the 'ability to strike with little to no warning against targets around the world,' according to a statement from the State Department, which added that Hezbollah may seek to expand its fundraising and procurement efforts in the Western Hemisphere, Africa, and other regions. 'Participants highlighted recent actions that governments have taken to counter Hezbollah's financial mechanisms and criminal schemes, as well as its international terrorist operations,' the statement read. The LECG was established in 2014 by the US and Europol to strengthen international cooperation against Hezbollah's global network.
