Valmik Thapar, tiger conservationist and author, dies at 73
Thapar was involved with efforts to protect wild tigers, particularly in Rajasthan's Ranthambore National Park, for nearly five decades.
In 1987, he co-founded the Ranthambhore Foundation to integrate local communities into conservation efforts and later collaborated with the non-profit Dastkar to help displaced villagers earn a livelihood.
Thapar also served as a member of more than 150 government panels and task forces, including the National Board for Wildlife and the Tiger Task Force, which was set up in the face of tigers disappearing from Rajasthan's Sariska. In a dissenting note, he had warned the task force against the coexistence of humans and tigers.
In his 2012 book, Tiger My Life, Ranthambhore and Beyond, Thapar had described his mission as one that involved creating 'inviolate spaces' for tigers, where they could 'live free, away from noise, away from humans'.
He was a vocal advocate for stricter anti-poaching laws.
Thapar was also an author and filmmaker. He wrote and edited more than 30 books, including Land of the Tiger and Tiger Fire, and co-produced a BBC documentary series titled Land of the Tiger.
Expressing condolences to Thapar's family, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said he was 'deeply saddened to learn about the passing of noted conservationist'.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that Thapar's death was a 'great loss'.
'Today's Ranthambore, particularly, is a testimony to his deep commitment and indefatigable zeal,' said Ramesh. 'He was uncommonly knowledgeable on a variety of issues relating to biodiversity and not a day passed during my Ministerial tenure without our talking to each other – with me almost always at the receiving end.'

The northern Indian town of Dharamshala, where the Dalai Lama is based with thousands of other Tibetans, has already seen the arrival of the heads of various sects of Buddhism ahead of a Wednesday-Friday religious conference that precedes the birthday celebrations on the weekend. "All the religious heads are here and they are going to talk to His Holiness, which may relate to reincarnation issues," said Tenzin Lekshay, spokesperson for the exiled government in Dharamshala, as mists and rains cloaked the Himalayan hills. On the first day of the conference, more than 100 religious figures including the senior monks will issue a declaration of gratitude to the Dalai Lama and discuss the way ahead, he said. The Dalai Lama will address them in Tibetan in a pre-recorded message but is unlikely to refer to reincarnation in that message, Lekshay said. The issue will "most probably" be covered in a written statement to be issued by the Dalai Lama late morning, he said. Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the written statement would refer to his reincarnation.

NEW DELHI: A parliamentary panel meeting on Rural Development and Panchayati Raj had to be postponed abruptly on Tuesday as BJP MPs boycotted its meeting in protest against the presence of activist Medha Patkar and actor-turned-activist Prakash Raj who were invited to appear before the committee. The meeting saw stormy scenes as former Union minister and BJP MP Parshottam Rupala along with other ruling party MPs stormed out with some calling Patkar as "anti-national". According to sources, a BJP MP told the meeting that 'Prime Minister of Pakistan could have been invited for the meeting." The panel, headed by Congress MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka was called to discuss the implementation and effectiveness of the land acquisition law enacted by Parliament when the Congress-led UPA government was in power in 2013. According to sources, within 40 minutes into the meeting, the BJP MPs began protests against the panel's decision to hear activist Medha Patkar, and called her "anti-national". While a BJP MP told this paper that they were not informed about the deposition of Medha Patkar and Prakash Raj, panel head Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka said that it is a normal practice for a committee to invite civil society members and other stakeholders on various issues.

Olympian Vinesh Phogat, husband Somvir Rathee blessed with baby boy

This is the first child for 30-year-old Vinesh and her husband, wrestler Somvir Rathee. Vinesh's elder brother Harvinder Phogat confirmed the news. 'Vinesh gave birth to a baby boy this morning. Both mother and baby are healthy. It's a moment of great joy for our family,' Harvinder told The Indian Express . Vinesh had announced her pregnancy in March on social media. She shared a photo with the message, 'Our love story continues with a new chapter,' along with baby and heart emojis. Harvinder added that Vinesh will return to Somvir's home in a few days. 'We will all visit her soon. Everyone in our village, Balali, is excited to welcome her and the baby,' he said. The 30-year-old was disqualified from the women's 50kg final at the Paris Olympics last year for going over the weight limit. After that, she said the missed Olympic medal was the 'biggest wound' of her life but added she might return to wrestling in the future. In September last year, Vinesh joined the Indian National Congress and later won the Julana seat in the Haryana Assembly elections by beating BJP's Yogesh Kumar. After the baby's birth, Congress leader Kumari Selja congratulated her.
