EU vows 'robust' countermeasures if Trump enacts 'unacceptable' 30% tariffs

National Posta day ago
BRUSSELS — EU trade ministers agreed Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of 30% tariffs on the European Union was 'absolutely unacceptable,' and they are studying a new set of countermeasures to respond to the move.

The ministers met Monday in Brussels following Trump's surprise announcement over the weekend of such hefty tariffs, which could have repercussions for governments, companies and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. The EU is America's biggest business partner and the world's largest trading bloc.

Maroš Šefčovič, the EU's trade representative in its talks with the U.S., said after the meeting that it was 'very obvious from the discussions today, the 30% is absolutely unacceptable.'

He said that the commission was sharing proposals with the 27 member countries 'for the second list of goods accounting of some 72 billion euros ($84 billion) worth of U.S imports. They will now have a chance to discuss it. This does not exhaust our toolbox and every instrument remains on the table.'

Lars Løkke Rasmussen, foreign minister of Denmark, which recently assumed the presidency of the EU, said the ministers vowed to work together in negotiating a trade deal with Washington or agreeing on countermeasures.
'The EU remains ready to react and that includes robust and proportionate countermeasures if required and there was a strong, feeling in the room of unity,' Rasmussen told reporters after the meeting.

The tariffs, also announced for Canada and Mexico, are set to start on Aug. 1 and could make everything from French cheese and Italian leather goods to German electronics and Spanish pharmaceuticals more expensive in the U.S., and destabilize economies from Portugal to Norway.

Meanwhile, Brussels decided to suspend retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods scheduled to take effect Monday in hopes of reaching a trade deal with the Trump administration by the end of the month.

The 'countermeasures' by the EU, which negotiates trade deals on behalf of its 27 member countries, will be delayed until Aug. 1. Trump's letter shows 'that we have until the first of August' to negotiate, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters in Brussels on Sunday.

Maroš Šefčovič, the EU's trade representative in its talks with the U.S., said negotiations would continue Monday.

'I'm absolutely 100% sure that a negotiated solution is much better than the tension which we might have after the 1st of August,' he told reporters in Brussels on Monday. But he added that 'we must be prepared for all outcomes.'

'I cannot imagine walking away without genuine effort. Having said that, the current uncertainty caused by unjustified tariffs cannot persist indefinitely and therefore we must prepare for all outcomes, including, if necessary, well-considered proportionate countermeasures to restore the balance in our transit static relationship.'

World shares are mixed after U.S. inflation update suggests tariffs are causing prices to rise

(AP Photo/Ahn Young-joon) BANGKOK — Shares were mixed Wednesday in Europe and Asia after an update on U.S. inflation pulled most Wall Street stocks lower, though gains for Nvidia pushed the Nasdaq to another record. The report showed inflation in the United States accelerated to 2.7% last month from 2.4% in May. Economists said higher prices for clothes, toys and other goods that usually are imported suggest stiffer tariffs that President Donald Trump has imposed on other countries are fueling inflation. Germany's DAX edged 0.1% higher to 24,074.54, while the CAC 40 in Paris shed 0.1% to 7,755.90. Britain's FTSE 100 was up 0.1% at 8,950.11. The future for the S&P 500 fell less than 0.1% while that for the Dow industrials was little changed. In Asian trading, tokyo's Nikkei 225 edged less than 0.1% lower, to 39,663.40. Investors are focusing on the potential impact of an election for the Upper House of Parliament on Sunday that is expected to lead to tax cuts and higher spending as lawmakers try to restore the waning popularity of the ruling Liberal Democrats. Worries over a deterioration in Japan's fiscal health have pushed yields of long-term Japanese government bonds to their highest levels in years. 'What's at stake isn't simply which party hands out the biggest bundle of goodies. It's whether the walls holding up Japan's house of debt can withstand another round of fiscal fireworks…' Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary. Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.3% to 24,517.76, while the Shanghai Composite index slipped less than 0.1% to 3,503.78. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.9% to 3,186.38 and in Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.8% to 8,561.80. Taiwan's Taiex jumped 0.9% and India's Sensex added 0.2%. Thailand's SET dropped 0.3%. In Jakarta, shares rose 0.7% after President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that he plans to charge imports from Indonesia a tariff of 19%, while American goods sent to the Southeast Asian country will face no tariffs. Trump also said Indonesia committed to buying U.S. energy, agricultural products and aircraft. On Tuesday, the S&P 500 fell 0.4%, staying near its all-time high set last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1%, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.2% to a record 20,677.80 thanks to Nvidia, the market's most influential stock. Nvidia said the U.S. government has assured it that licenses will be granted for its H20 chip, used for artificial intelligence, again and that deliveries will hopefully begin soon. Its 4% gain was by far the strongest force pushing upward on the S&P 500. Wall Street loves lower interest rates because they goose prices higher for stocks and other investments, and Trump himself has been clamoring for the Federal Reserve to cut rates more quickly. But the Fed has been keeping interest rates on hold this year since lower rates can give inflation more fuel while they boost the economy. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has insisted he wants to see more data about how tariffs affect the economy and inflation. In other dealings early Wednesday, U.S. benchmark crude oil shed 21 cents to $66.31 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, slipped 31 cents at $68.40 per barrel. The dollar fell to 148.79 Japanese yen from 148.87 yen. The euro was at $1.1630, up from $1.1602. Elaine Kurtenbach, The Associated Press

Trump Could Make This Amazing Dividend Stock Even More Valuable Soon; Here's Why

Key Points The president is pushing for lower interest rates. Lower rates will make high-yielding stocks more valuable. Vici Properties could be a big winner. 10 stocks we like better than Vici Properties › Countless inputs influence the price of stocks and the direction of the market; inflation, company earnings, new technology, fiscal and monetary policy, and unemployment, to name a few. One of the most influential is interest rates. Generally, lower rates are good for stocks because they stimulate the economy through lower borrowing costs. However, lower rates can also be a sign of economic challenges, so rising stock prices aren't a given. Investors can snag yields higher than 4% on safe, fixed-income vehicles like bonds and CDs now. But this probably won't last much longer. Right or wrong, it's no secret that President Donald Trump wants the Federal Reserve to lower the federal funds rate. He is exerting a highly public pressure campaign against Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, and Trump will get to appoint a new chair in May of next year who will undoubtedly share his views. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More » When the 4% risk-free investments are gone, people will need to find safe, high-yield investments elsewhere. Here's why real estate investment trust (REIT) Vici Properties (NYSE: VICI) will be a popular choice. A different kind of REIT Remote work and downsizing are long-term challenges for real estate investment trusts (REITs) that own office space. But Vici is different. Vici is an "experiential" focused REIT that owns some of the most recognizable casino resorts and other trophy properties in the world, including Caesars Palace, MGM Grand, The Venetian, and Chelsea Piers, to name just a few of the 90-plus holdings. The focus on trophy properties has many advantages. First, they are extremely difficult to replace. Building a strip mall or office building is much simpler than building a billion-dollar resort. Next, Vici's tenants are deep-pocketed corporations like MGM Resorts International. This means that there is less risk that the rent won't get paid during a downturn. In fact, Vici collected 100% of rents even when many resorts were shut during COVID-19. Is Vici Properties a buy now? Vici has raised its dividend annually since its inception and pays $0.43 quarterly now. The current yield of more than 5% is better than most fixed-income options, greater than Vici's five-year average, and more than many other popular REITs, as shown below. VICI Dividend Yield data by YCharts Realty Income yields more now. However, Vici's dividend has risen 7.4% compounded annually during the past seven years compared to 2.9% for Realty Income. One risk to Vici is that there is a limited supply of experiential properties to acquire. But Vici is expanding outside of casino properties. For instance, it invested in resort owner Great Wolf Lodges in 2022 and a partnership on the mixed-use development One Beverly Hills in 2025. Vici also lends money to its tenants for expansion and new development. This means Vici earns interest on the loan and rent on the property. Vici's funds from operations (FFO), the cash generated from its primary operations, has ballooned from $810 million to $2.7 billion during the past three years. The increase is terrific, as this is the cash the company can use to pay and increase the dividend and fund growth. On a per-share basis, FFO is up from just over $1 to $2.55 during the same period, showing that Vici's management and strategy are highly effective. Given the company's excellent holdings, impressive yield, and rising cash flow, Vici Properties is an excellent investment. In the likely event that the president gets his desired interest rates cut, investors could flock here for income, making the company even more valuable. Carney heads to Hamilton to meet steelworkers as U.S. trade talks continue

Prime Minister Mark Carney takes part in a meeting on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in The Hague, Netherlands on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Sean Kilpatrick OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to be in Hamilton today to make an announcement related to the steel industry. It has been more than a month since U.S. President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25 to 50 per cent, adding further economic insult to the two industries in Canada. Carney met with his cabinet virtually on Tuesday and told reporters before that meeting he doesn't think Trump will agree to any trade deals without including some tariffs. Carney will tour a steel company in the city and meet with workers during his visit to Hamilton. Carney and Trump have been negotiating a new economic and security pact since early May and last week Trump unilaterally pushed the deadline for reaching that from July 21 to Aug. 1. He told Carney in a letter on July 10 Canada will be hit with 35 per cent tariffs that day, with the White House saying the current plan is for that to apply only to those Canadian imports not covered under the existing Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement. Carney says negotiations with the U.S. are likely to intensify as that Aug. 1 deadline approaches. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 16, 2025.
