Bharat Biotech, GSK to cut malaria vaccine price by half for children
The lower price is attributed to process improvements, expanded production capacity, cost-effective manufacturing, and minimal profit margins. The phased reduction will begin immediately and is expected to be fully realised by 2028, coinciding with the completion of technology transfer from GSK to Bharat Biotech.
RTS,S was first recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021. Since then, GSK has invested in enhancing production capacity, efficiency, and in the technology transfer to Bharat Biotech. Bharat Biotech has invested over $200 million in new manufacturing facilities, product development, and technology transfers to support this effort.
With support from Gavi, 12 endemic countries in Africa are projected to introduce RTS,S through routine immunisation programmes by the end of 2025. This initiative is the result of collaboration between GSK, Bharat Biotech, PATH, the WHO, implementing countries, MedAccess and Gavi.
According to the WHO's Malaria Vaccine Implementation Programme in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi — where over 2 million children received RTS,S between 2019 and 2023 — the vaccine led to a 13 per cent reduction in all-cause mortality and a 22 per cent drop in hospitalisations from severe malaria in eligible children. When administered seasonally alongside seasonal malaria chemoprevention, the WHO-recommended malaria vaccines have been shown to prevent about 75 per cent of malaria episodes.
Bharat Biotech's executive chairman, Krishna Ella, described the announcement as a commitment to global equity, and said the collaboration aims to bridge the gap between vaccine supply and the needs of children at risk of malaria.
GSK's chief global health officer, Thomas Breuer, said the company's contribution to the long-term price reduction was enabled by manufacturing improvements and technology transfer to Bharat Biotech.
Gavi chief executive Sania Nishtar said the partnership supports the goal of protecting 50 million more children in Africa from malaria by 2030. Kwaku Poku Asante of the Kintampo Health Research Centre said the reduced price could enable broader protection for children in the most affected communities.
Malaria vaccines are part of a broader WHO-recommended toolkit, which includes bed nets, treatments, indoor residual spraying and seasonal chemoprevention. GSK is also developing a new vaccine targeting a different stage of the malaria parasite's life cycle to expand prevention strategies.
Bharat Biotech, based in Hyderabad's Genome Valley, holds over 145 global patents and has supplied more than 9 billion vaccine doses worldwide. Its product portfolio includes over 19 vaccines and four biotherapeutics.

'The country has a certification system National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) and a training programme for the staff. However, NQAS and hospital staff training do not address all the Ten Steps to successful breastfeeding. There is weakness in overall coordination, process of external assessment/award system and monitoring and implementation of the IMS Act,' the report said.

But these drugs were found to have a side effect that triggered substantial, sustained weight loss. Demand rose from people wanting to lose weight, and that caused a shortage. Fakes have filled the gap. Fake drugs are a global problem Drug counterfeiting is a major global problem . The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that one in 10 pharmaceuticals are fakes that carry no guarantee of any health benefits. While this is mainly a problem in low-and-middle income countries, especially parts of Africa and Asia, around 1% of people in high-income nations also obtain medication from unregulated sources. In some cases, these drugs may have no effect. In other cases, however, ingredients in the fake medication may lead to adverse reactions or create new health problems. "Purchasing medicine online from unregulated, unlicensed sources can expose patients to potentially unsafe products that have not undergone appropriate evaluation or approval, or do not meet quality standards," said the US regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2023, when it issued its first warnings about the problem. In 2024, the WHO issued a global warning that batches of fake Ozempic were flooding the black market. More recently, in July 2025, data from the UK National Pharmacy Association found one in five Britons had attempted to obtain weight loss treatments in the previous year. It warned that the high demand for these medicines carried the risk that people would "resort to unregulated online suppliers instead of regulated pharmacies." Where are people buying counterfeit medicine? Unregulated pharmaceuticals are being sold via online-only pharmacies, international drug shopping and organised criminal distributors. These digital marketplaces are not online stores for established pharmacies, but sites that seemingly offer medicine at a fraction of the usual cost. The drugs may look identical to genuine medicines online, but when delivered often have spelling errors on the packet or incorrect ingredient listings. But it's not only fake drugs or placebos. Regulators have raised concern about compounding, where medicines that have been approved individually can be formulated to produce non-regulated "compounds" for individual patients. In some regions of the world, including the US, trained pharmacists are allowed to compound medicines, but even then, the practice is less regulated than the stringent approvals that drug manufacturers must meet to bring their products to market. For example, when the FDA temporarily allowed the compounding of weight loss drugs to address a product shortage, some pharmacists used semaglutide salts — which are not approved by regulators — instead of semaglutide itself. This led to reports of side effects. And it wasn't just trained compounding pharmacies that were formulating these products in the US. Ahmed said, "this is done in [places] like gymnasiums and spas." The FDA has now stopped allowing compounded versions of these weight loss drugs, but it is concerned that unregulated online pharmacies are still making substandard products available. Raising awareness about fake drugs To address concerns that consumers may seek unsafe products from unregulated sources, the FDA operates a campaign called BeSafeRx that provides guidance for consumers to identify genuine pharmaceuticals. In the European Union, safety features on medicines are mandated, and include standardized labeling practices. In a statement provided to DW, the European Medicines Agency said "patients should only use online retailers registered with the national competent authorities in the EU Member States, to reduce the risk of buying substandard or falsified medicines." Europol, which is responsible for law enforcement for pharmaceutical crime across member states, has coordinated regular actions across the bloc in collaboration with US and Colombian partners. In a 2023 operation, more than 1,284 people were charged for offenses related to the trafficking of counterfeit and misused medicines and doping substances. As well as local awareness campaigns and enforcement initiatives, the key measure, Ahmed said, was to help improve awareness between patients and their health practitioners. Ahmed heads the Johns Hopkins University's BESAFE initiative, which investigates risks and interventions to prevent the uptake of substandard and counterfeit medication. Surveys undertaken by BESAFE have found that within the US and South Africa, awareness of where to safely buy prescriptions and report fakes or adverse events is low. He said building trust between consumers, medical practitioners and regulators may help avoid the risks of counterfeit and unregulated drug purchases.

'25% lung cancer patients are non-smokers, women, youth'
Lucknow: Around 25 per cent of lung cancer cases in the city are now being reported among non-smokers, with a growing number seen in women and younger adults. On the eve of World Lung Cancer Day, experts from KGMU and other major hospitals linked this rise to air pollution, indoor smoke exposure, and late diagnosis. Prof Ved Parkash, head of respiratory and critical care medicine at KGMU, said that about 30% of their lung cancer patients never smoked. "This trend is especially common in women and children exposed to air pollution, smoke from biomass fuels in rural and semi-urban homes, and secondhand smoke in shared households," he explained. He cited a study published last year in Atmospheric Environment, which found that PM2.5 levels in the city regularly exceed WHO limits. The study highlighted pollution hotspots and seasonal spikes in fine particulate matter. In non-smokers, lung cancer was associated with environmental pollutants, indoor toxins, genetic predispositions, and evolving lifestyles. "Women may also be more biologically vulnerable to these factors," he noted. Dr Abhishek Kumar Singh, director of medical oncology at Medanta Hospital, stressed the danger of secondhand smoke and industrial fumes. "The secondhand smoke from tobacco products contains thousands of harmful chemicals. Paint and industrial emissions further increase risk. These exposures can lead to asthma, bronchitis, and various cancers - especially in children and pregnant women. Avoiding smoking in closed spaces and ensuring good ventilation are key preventive steps," he said. Dr Alok Gupta, senior director of medical oncology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, added, "Even non-smokers' lungs show black deposits due to long-term exposure to pollutants. Besides passive smoke, other risks include unventilated cooking fumes, radon gas, and asbestos." Dr Dawar Masud Rizavi, associate director, pulmonology and sleep medicine at Apollo Hospital, said, "Exposure to radon, industrial toxins, air pollution, and poorly ventilated indoor cooking can increase the risk. In some families, genetics may play a role, but many of these exposures are preventable." he said.
