Keralite at helm, world's largest container vessel all set for Vizhinjam date
Captain Willy, 47, hailing from Puranattukara, is thrilled to bring the mammoth vessel equivalent in length to four football fields and capable of carrying cargo stacked as high as a 22-storey building — to his home state.
'It's a proud moment for me to command a ship of this scale,' said Captain Willy. 'This vessel and Vizhinjam are both dear to me. Bringing the ship to my own land doubles the joy,' he said.
However, the vessel which has a capacity of 24,346 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) will have to wait for its turn to berth at the busy port as there are seven vessels already lined up for docking. Originally scheduled to dock on June 5, berthing may be delayed to June 7 or 8, said port sources.
Given its enormous size, the vessel owned by Mediterranean Shipping Company and flying the Liberian flag will require four tugs to assist in mooring, compared to the usual two. An estimated 4,000 containers will be handled during its stay at Vizhinjam.

Willy Antony has been commanding MSC Irina since its commissioning in March 2023. The vessel's voyage included stops in Singapore, China, and South Korea before returning to Singapore. His wife, Hilda, and son, Benhail, accompanied him on the initial leg of the journey and disembarked in Singapore.
'Berthing is going to be challenging considering the monsoon condition. But the port has experienced people, including two of my former colleagues, to handle it,' he said. 'Vizhinjam has a georgaphical advantage for its natural depth,' Willy said.
Despite the excitement of nearing home, Captain Willy expressed disappointment that he and his crew will not be able to step ashore.

Fishermen seek action on petitions submitted at meetings
A majority of the fishermen from Kanniyakumari district raised concern over the delayed responses and negligent actions of the authorities towards the petitions submitted at the monthly grievance redressal meetings. These concerns were raised during the fishermen grievance redressal meeting held at the Collectorate on Wednesday. At the meeting, fishermen from various regions, including Marthandamthurai, Kurumbanai and other coastal areas, said that their petitions often receive either negligent replies or in many cases no response. The issue arose when a petitioner from Melakurumbanai claimed that he never received a reply for his grievance, requesting the distribution of free land pattas to the needy from the vacant land near Colachel bus stand. In response to his petition, Kalkulam Tahsildar had noted that the land was classified as Ryotwari and therefore could not be allocated for distribution of pattas to the poor. However, the petitioner stated that he had never received that reply online. This made other petitioners highlight the absence of officials in the meeting and negligence in taking timely actions. Dhasan from Enayam highlighted the poor condition of government bus service to their village. He said several buses had been cancelled and those that were still in operation in extremely poor condition, raising serious concerns about passenger safety. South Asian Fishermen Fraternity has submitted a petition demanding compensation for Kanniyakumari fishermen affected by ship wreck of Liberian Cargo vessel MSC ELSA 3, off the Kochi coast. The submerged containers pose a risk to fishermen nets and boats. Collision with these containers may damage or even sink fishing boats. Now that the fishing period ban to end in Kerala, fishermen from Kanniyakumari will resume deep sea fishing in Kerala's maritime zone. The petition urged that compensation similar to Kerala should also be secured by the Tamil Nadu government for the fishermen from Kanniyakumari and their fishing equipment damaged due to the submerged containers. Padmanbhapuram Sub-Collector Vinay Kumar Meena, Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department Deputy Director Chinnakuppan, Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Assistant Directors and other officials were present at the meeting. Kanniyakumari Collector R. Alagumeena joined the session later due to official commitments.

While some believe this AI talent war benefits researchers, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis called it a rational move for Meta, saying the company is merely trying to catch up. Others, like Sam Altman, are less charitable, he has compared Meta's tactics to those of the mafia. Zuckerberg's ambitions go beyond catching up. His goal is Superintelligence: AI that surpasses human intelligence across all domains. This includes integrating advanced AI into Meta's social platforms to offer digital companionship, generate unlimited personalized content, and enhance targeted advertising. BNP Paribas estimates the Superintelligence hiring spree could drive $1.5 billion to $3.5 billion in additional annual research spending, with Meta already raising its capital expenditure forecast by 10% to between $64 billion and $72 billion for 2025. Despite the massive investments and internal tensions as existing AI staff worry about being sidelined, Meta's stock has risen 20% this year as investors show more patience for AI spending compared to the metaverse push that drew sharp criticism in 2022.
