Unkempt pavements and parks leave Mbombela residents gatvol

The Citizen09-05-2025
Residents are still gatvol with the City of Mbombela's (CoM) inability to deliver on their promised Service Delivery Drive (SDD).
Overgrown public parks and pavements, unpruned trees and unkempt grass have still not been attended to. Litter is also a major problem and residents fear criminal attacks will increase as a result of uncleared vegetation. Residents of Wilger, Palm, Alibama, Delta and Wolfaard streets, as well as those residing in certain sections of Dr Enos Mabuza Drive, complained that the CoM is ignoring their repeated requests for service delivery.

Despite paying rates and taxes, residents are now banding together to clean their streets themselves.
The unused area at the cemetery has deteriorated even further than ever before.
Homeless people have moved in, making fires and leaving loads of litter behind. The park at the top of Polvy Street has become dangerous, with people consuming alcohol there and dumping the empty bottles.
Despite these complaints, the CoM's municipal manager, Wiseman Khumalo, insists that litter removal, tree pruning and grass clearing are ongoing.

'Our municipality is servicing 45 wards, some without roads or water. We are aware that the residents complain because they are paying their taxes and rates. We are doing our best to attend to all with limited resources.'
He also reiterated that the SDD is accelerating services and all wards are prioritised. According to him streetlights are being repaired and potholes are going to be attended to.
'Grass will not stop growing, but will be attended to. The litter its beyond our control because we have placed dustbins in hotspot areas, but people are ignoring them. We take responsibility to collect them. Our community members need to come on board and stop littering. I must admit that we have been slow in pruning trees, but we are now attending to them. People need to understand that we serve many, not only those in Mbombela. All we ask from residents is to be patient with us,' he said.
Khumalo encouraged the CoM's residents to use available platforms to submit their complaints.

Welverdiend residents endure days without power after substation failure — again

Thousands of residents in Welverdiend, Khutsong Extensions 5 and 6, and the Elijah Barayi Mega Housing Project have been left without electricity since Sunday, June 29, following yet another failure at the Frikkie van der Merwe Substation. The ongoing Welverdiend power outage began at approximately 08:30 on one of the coldest mornings of the year. As of Tuesday, July 1, electricity had still not been restored, forcing families to endure freezing conditions without heating, hot water, or cooking facilities. According to Merafong Municipality, the substation's transformer tripped due to overloading caused by increased winter electricity demand. Municipal Manager Dumisani Mabuza confirmed the transformer also suffered an oil leak, requiring factory-level repairs. A replacement transformer is expected only by Thursday, July 3, leaving residents without power for up to five days. This marks yet another failure of the same transformer, which locals say has broken down multiple times in recent years without being replaced. Despite these persistent issues, the municipality continues to approve new housing developments — including at the Elijah Barayi mega project — without upgrading the aging electrical infrastructure that services Welverdiend and surrounding areas. Residents are outraged, particularly as most new occupants reportedly do not pay for services, according to council documents. In contrast, long-time residents, many of whom are diligent ratepayers, are left to endure the consequences of a collapsing system. 'We are tired of suffering in the cold while nothing changes,' said one resident. 'How can they keep building more houses without fixing the electricity problem?' Adding to the frustration, local residents recently repaired damaged roads themselves after both Merafong Municipality and the Gauteng Roads Department failed to act. The Herald contacted the municipality's communications manager Temba Fezani for further comment, but he had not responded by the time of publication. Parents hailed as heroes after rescuing child from burning Dannhauser home

A house was gutted and family members had to be treated medically after a fire broke out at a home in Emafusini, Dannhauser, last Tuesday evening. Community spokesperson Farzanah Dookie (of the Helping Hands organisation) said that the family had lost everything in the blaze. The parents bravely saved their child from the blaze, but the house was destroyed, leaving them with nothing. 'We're reaching out for your kindness and generosity to provide essential items like food, blankets and medicines. 'Your donation can help us rebuild this family's life. Let's come together to offer hope and support in their time of need! 'Please consider contributing and sharing this post to spread the word. Every bit will help.' Farzanah can be contacted on 060 762 8423. The fire, believed to have started after a stove was left on overnight, destroyed the home before the fire brigade could arrive. It was only this week that Dannhauser Municipality announced the arrival of a new, high-performance, robust fire-fighting bush pumper. The equipment includes a 2000-litre water tank, 100-litre foam tank and a centrifugal pump. Hope is that the new equipment will help the municipality to respond effectively to fires during winter when authorities are on high alert.
