Douglas McCarthy, the co-founding vocalist of English industrial dance outfit Nitzer Ebb, has passed away at the age of 58.
McCarthy's death was confirmed by Nitzer Ebb's official social media account on Tuesday (June 11). 'It is with a heavy heart that we regret to inform that Douglas McCarthy passed away this morning of June 11th, 2025,' a post read.

'We ask everyone to please be respectful of Douglas, his wife, and family in this difficult time,' it added. 'We appreciate your understanding and will share more information soon.'
McCarthy co-founded Nitzer Ebb in 1982 alongside school friends Vaughan 'Bon' Harris and David Gooday, with the group taking inspiration from the post-punk genre for their early single releases. That sound soon evolved with more industrial and electronic influences, with the band quickly becoming regarded as noted figures within the 'electronic body music' scene – a genre that combined elements of industrial and punk with dance music.
The group's debut album, That Total Age, would be issued in May 1987, and though avoiding chart success, the single 'Join the Chant' would reach No. 9 on the Dance Club Songs charts.
Nitzer Ebb would remain a fixture of the chart in the coming years, with singles such as 'Control I'm Here,' 'Lightning Man,' and 'Fun to Be Had' all appearing therein, with the latter giving the band their highest peak when it reached No. 5 in 1990. They would also impact the Alternative Airplay charts, with 1991's 'Family Man' giving them a career high when it reached No. 21.
While 1991's Ebbhead would be their only record to reach the Billboard 200 (peaking at No. 146), their follow-up, 1995's Big Hit, would be the band's last for 15 years, with Nitzer Ebb splitting soon after its release.
McCarthy would contribute to Recol, the solo project of Depeche Mode's Alan Wilder throughout the '90s, and later collaborate with French producer Terence Fixmer as one half of Fixmer/McCarthy. Nitzer Ebb would reform in 2006 and release their final album, Industrial Complex, in 2010. In 2013, McCarthy would release his only solo album, Kill Your Friends.
In recent years, McCarthy had suffered from noted ill health, with Harris taking over vocals for a series of 2021 performances after McCarthy collapsed before a show due to a 'pre-existing' medical condition. In early 2024, McCarthy announced he would no longer be performing live after being diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver.

21 Hit Songs You Never Knew Were Actually Covers

Many people prefer certain song covers to the original, which is perfectly fine. On the other hand, there are songs that people are clueless about, even if they are song covers in the first place! Which means I can now rock out to two versions of these classics! Here are 21 songs you didn't know were actually covers: "1985" by Bowling for Soup is a cover of the song by American pop-punk band SR-71, which was released just two months earlier in Japan before the manager believed it was a better fit for Bowling for Soup. Although probably more well-known, the emotional song "Hurt" by Johnny Cash is a cover of the song performed by the rock band Nine Inch Nails. "Respect" by Aretha Franklin is a cover of Otis Redding's 1965 song by the same name. Franklin really flipped the lyrics on their head to create an all-time classic. "Renegades of Funk" by Rage Against the Machine is a cover of the Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force song of the same name. The song "It's My Life" by No Doubt is a cover of the English band Talk Talk's original release in 1984. The iconic "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston is a cover of the 1974 song by Dolly Parton, which was featured on her famous album "Jolene." An absolute shocker to my '90s brain, but the 1997 hit song "Torn" by Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia is actually a cover originally sung by American rock band Ednaswap, which was released in 1995. The popular song "Don't Cha" by The Pussycat Dolls is a cover of the original song by Tori Alamaze. The popular '80s hit "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell is a cover of Gloria Jones's "Tainted Love," released in 1964. The song "Superman" by R.E.M. is a cover of "Superman" by The Clique. A B-Side track on the album "White Tornado," it's an R.E.M. gem. The mega summer hit from 1999 "Mambo No. 5" by Lou Bega is a sample of the original version by Cuban musician Dámaso Pérez Prado from 1950. The 1992 song "Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus is a cover of "Don't Tell My Heart," which was first recorded in 1991 by The Marcy Brothers. The song "If I Were A Boy" by Beyoncé was performed initially by BC Jean in 2008. The song "Black Magic Woman" by Santana is a cover of the song by Fleetwood Mac. Mind blown. In my defense, the Santana version has more views on YouTube than any other version by Fleetwood Mac. "Blinded by the Light" by Manfred Mann's Earth Band might be the more popular version, but it was originally written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen. The popular Joan Jett & the Blackhearts song "I Love Rock 'n Roll" is a cover of the British glam band Arrow's song "I Love Rock 'n 'Roll." "Dancing in the Moonlight" by the English band Toploader is a cover of the song originally recorded by Sherman Kelly's band, Boffalongo, which first released it in 1970. Then, Kelly rereleased the song with his new band, King Harvest, in 1972. So, technically, Kelly covered his own song. "Black Betty" by Ram Jam is a cover of a song credited to songwriter Huddie Ledbetter. The oldest recorded version was performed by James "Iron Head" Baker and a group of Texas prisoners in the 1930s. "Take Me to the River" by American rock band Talking Heads is a cover of the 1974 soul song by Al Green. The 1995 hit "Gangster's Paradise" by Coolio (ft. L.V.) is actually a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise" from 1976. Lastly, and mainly for the youngins, Post Malone's cover of the alternative rock song "Only Wanna Be With You," originally released by Hootie & the Blowfish, is now a pop song featured in the Pokémon 25 soundtrack, which has 18M views on YouTube. Is there a song you were stunned to learn was a cover? Comment below (the song and artists)!

Billie Eilish Could Rebound After Leaving The 2025 Grammys Empty-Handed

Following losses at the 2025 Grammys, Billie Eilish's 'Wildflower' could bring her back to the Best ... More Pop Solo Performance category in 2026. LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 10: Billie Eilish performs on stage at The O2 Arena on July 10, 2025 in London, England. (Photo byfor Live Nation) At just 23 years old, Billie Eilish is already one of the most decorated pop singers of all time when it comes to the Grammys. The singer-songwriter has scored nine trophies out of 32 nominations – an amazing sum with just three albums to her credit. While she's not in need of any additional gold, Eilish is always a contender whenever she has any music eligible for music's biggest night. Despite her decorated history, Eilish lost every category she was nominated in at the 2025 ceremony, including some of the biggest fields. She has a chance to return at the upcoming show, and she could collect a milestone tenth award if her latest single can earn a nomination. Two Billie Eilish Singles are Grammy-Eligible Eilish's most recent album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, which she's been promoting since last spring, is ineligible at the upcoming Grammys. The full-length and several tracks featured on it were up for awards at the most recent show, which means they aren't going to be in the running in a few months when nominations are handed down. Two singles featured on Hit Me Hard and Soft should be eligible in 2026, as Eilish pushed both 'Chihiro' and 'Wildflower' as promotional cuts from the project. The current eligibility period began in September 2024, and since then, both were sent out as singles, so the two tracks have a chance at being submitted. Between the pair, 'Wildflower' is the likely contender, as it's the one that performed best at radio in the United States. While 'Chihiro' climbed slightly higher on the Hot 100, 'Wildflower' has already been certified double platinum by the RIAA, while 'Chihiro' has moved one million units and earned a platinum certification. Can Billie Eilish Finally Win Best Pop Solo Performance? Eilish could be headed for her sixth nomination in the Best Pop Solo Performance category with 'Wildflower.' She's previously been nominated for 'Bad Guy,' 'Everything I Wanted,' 'Happier Than Ever,' 'What Was I Made For,' and, last time around, 'Birds of a Feather,' also from Hit Me Hard and Soft. Somewhat shockingly, and despite being one of the biggest names in pop music of the past half-decade or so, she's never won in this field. 'Wildflower' is also a possible contender for both Record and Song of the Year in what may be a sleepy year at the Grammys, though its relatively low peak position doesn't suggest it's a frontrunner for a slot. A Grammys Rebound While Eilish has never professed to be awards-obsessed, she may be looking to rebound after batting zero at the 2025 ceremony. Hit Me Hard and Soft was up for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, while 'Birds of a Feather' was in the running for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. She didn't claim any new honors at that show, but 'What Was I Made For' did earn Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the prior ceremony, so it's not as if it's been long since she last scored big. Eligibility for the 2026 Grammys runs from September 1, 2024, until August 30, 2025. Nominations are expected to be announced later this year.
