69kg of drugs seized at Auckland Airport

Drugs with an estimated street value of nearly $26 million have been seized in two separate incidents at Auckland Airport.
Customs say in the first case, officers found 50kg of methamphetamine inside two unaccompanied duffel bags, which arrived on a flight from Malaysia.
And the bag of a passenger arriving from New York contained nearly 18kg of methamphetamine and 1kg of cocaine.
A 22-year-old man faces drugs charges in relation to the bag from New York.
"Both these seizures were the result of the excellent skills of our frontline officers who recognised tell-tale signs that prompted further investigations and turned up these significant quantities of illegal drugs," said Customs' Acting Manager Auckland Airport Donnelle Nicholson.
Nicholson said officers had stopped about half a tonne of illicit drugs from entering New Zealand so far this year, which was significant and concerning.

Teen appealing conviction over stabbing of of Enere McLaren-Taana

The now 14-year-old was found guilty of the manslaughter of 16-year-old Enere McLaren-Taana and sentenced to three years and three months in prison at the High Court in Dunedin last month. He was granted permanent name suppression, but Justice Osborne declined to discharge him without conviction despite acknowledging he might get deported. The Court of Appeal confirmed paperwork had been filed, but it could not share the grounds of the appeal. During his sentencing, the judge told the defendant that aggravating factors included carrying and concealing a long knife, that McLaren-Taana was unarmed and there was nothing to suggest he was threatening the defendant's life. After the sentencing, the victim's father said he didn't think the sentence was long enough. John McLaren told the court in his victim impact statement that Enere's death was "soul-crushing", saying he would never forget seeing his son on a trolley at the hospital and hearing his mum scream.

Details revealed of proposed urgent and after hours
The government has a goal of 98 per cent of New Zealanders being able to access "in person" urgent and afterhours healthcare within a one hour drive from their home. It's allocated $164 million over four years to expand services across the country. Now details of what and where those services will be have emerged. The range of care and opening hours are set out for large urban centres, smaller city services, rural centres and remote areas. There will 21 large urban centres in the North Island, two in the South Island; five smaller city clinics in the North, and six in the South. The Royal College of Urgent Care is pleased at the planned extension of afterhours care, but has expressed reservations over workforce numbers and funding. Man charged after Westport motel fight ends in death
Photo: RNZ / Nate McKinnon A homicide investigation is under way after a man died following an altercation in Westport. West Coast Area Commander Inspector Jacqui Corner said police were called to a reported altercation at a motel on Palmerston St, Westport about 3.10pm on Wednesday. The victim was found critically injured and was flown to Greymouth Hospital, where he died shortly before midnight. "The alleged offender has been charged with wounding with intent to injure and is expected to appear in the Greymouth District Court today. "A homicide investigation is now under way, however, we are still in the very early stages." A scene guard remained in place overnight, and police would be carrying out a forensic examination of the scene on Friday, Corner said. "This is a tragic incident, and we are providing support to the victim's family. "Westport is a tight-knit community, and this will be felt widely. While we are not seeking anyone else in relation to the victim's death, members of the community will see an increased police presence while we carry out our enquiries."
