Government forms National Crisis Management Committee to tackle major disasters
In a notification, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said exercising the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 8A of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 (53 of 2005), the central government constituted the NCMC.
The formation of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) comes days after relentless monsoon rains triggered widespread floods, landslides in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Manipur, among others reeling under floods, landslides.
While the cabinet secretary will be the chairperson, the NCMC members will constitute of the Union home secretary, defence secretary, secretary (co-ordination), cabinet secretariat and member and head of department, the National Disaster Management Authority, reported PTI.
The committee shall be the apex body for dealing with the situation arising out of a major disaster, which has national ramifications, the notification said.
The chairperson of the NCMC may co-opt any expert or any officer either from the central government or the state government or any organisation, depending on the nature of the crisis, to assist the committee in performing its functions during a threatening disaster situation, an emerging disaster situation or a disaster.
Here's what the National Crisis Management Committee will do: The NCMC shall evaluate preparedness to respond to any threatening disaster situation, emerging disaster situation or disaster and give directions, where necessary, for enhancing such preparedness.
The NCMC shall coordinate and monitor actions of the concerned ministries or departments of the government of India, state governments, national authority, state authorities, governmental and non-governmental organisations in relation to disaster response.
The NCMC shall give such directions as may be necessary for the proper coordination and monitoring of disaster response in the country, the notification said.

New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday urged leaders of political parties to send representatives who are empowered to take decisions to meetings for finalising the agenda for Parliament. Birla's remarks came as the opposition members sought an assurance from the government on discussion on the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar after the conclusion of the debate on Operation Sindoor. The opposition members were in the Well of the House, raising slogans and seeking an assurance before the Lok Sabha took up the discussion on Operation Sindoor. Birla said that at the all-party meeting chaired by him last week, all leaders sought a discussion on Operation Sindoor, which was agreed to, and 16 hours were allocated for the same. 'There is something called commitment. Leaders of all parties had sought a discussion on Operation Sindoor and now you are in the Well of the House raising other issues," he said, addressing opposition members. 'You can't demand a discussion on any issue from the Well of the House. The House runs as per rules of procedure," Birla said. The Speaker told SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who was on his feet demanding a discussion on SIR, to send a representative who is empowered to take decisions to the all-party meeting. 'If you are not empowered and if someone else has to take decisions, then such persons should not come to the all-party meetings," Birla said. The Lok Sabha was to take up a special discussion on 'India's strong, successful and decisive" Operation Sindoor in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam at 12 noon. ‘Maunvrat…': Shashi Tharoor's cryptic two-word reply to Operation Sindoor debate question
As Parliament gears up for a high-stakes debate on the Pahalgam terror attack and the government-led Operation Sindoor, a cloud of speculation surrounds whether senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will participate in the discussion. Last week, taking a swipe on social media platform X, Ramesh wrote, 'Very shortly the nattily dressed Prime Minister will give his usual Desh ke Naam Sandesh through the media outside the Parliament Building before the commencement of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. This will be full of his usual platitudes and hypocrisy.' Ramesh further added, 'Prime Minister Modi is very, very, very rarely present in Parliament. He speaks once a year on the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address. 'Did you take chance…?': SC to Justice Yashwant Varma on his plea against probe into cash at his home
'Why did you appear before the inquiry committee? Did you take chance of favourable order there first?' the Supreme Court asked Justice Yashwant Varma on Monday, as he sought quashing of an adverse report of the SC in-house committee. Justice Yashwant Varma(PTI File) The committee found him guilty of misconduct over the unaccounted-for cash found at his Delhi residence in March. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Justice Varma, submitted that there is a process to be followed under Article 124 of the Constitution, and that a judge can't be a subject of public debate, PTI reported. At this point, the bench asked, "Why did you (Justice Varma) appear before the inquiry committee? Did you take a chance of a favourable order there first?" Justice Varma's plea challenges the probe report and the committee's very remit. It also seeks quashing of the then CJI Sanjiv Khanna's recommendation to initiate impeachment proceedings against him. For now posted at the Allahabad high court, Justice Varma is staring at action via Parliament. He wants that the recommendation by the CJI — asking the President and Prime Minister to start his removal process — be declared unconstitutional, ANI reported.
