Small boats to cross the English Channel seized in Bulgaria

BBC News5 days ago
Small boats due to be used by people smugglers in the English Channel have been seized from a lorry in Bulgaria.National Crime Agency (NCA) officers worked with Bulgarian law enforcement partners to seize the 25 inflatable boats, which had just crossed the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint near the border with Greece and Turkey. The NCA said the seizure was thought to be the biggest single detection of small boats in 2025.Jacque Beer, NCA's regional head of investigation, said: "Taking them out before they could reach the shores of northern France means we have not only prevented crossings from happening and lives being put at risk, but also put a dent in the profits of the people smugglers."
Mr Beer said the boats, which when inflated were about 8m (26.2ft) long and could have carried a total of up to 1,500 people, were "completely ill-suited for use at sea". The seizure was made as part of an NCA operation, supported by Home Office International Operations, targeting supplies of small boat equipment moving into Europe. The operation gathered intelligence which led to Bulgarian customs officers intercepting the lorry.Martin Hewitt, the UK's border security commander, added: "This seizure marks a significant step forward in our joint work alongside the NCA to disrupt the supply chain fuelling these dangerous small boat crossings."
Mr Beer said work with international partners had intercepted more than 650 boats and engines since early 2023.Just under 37,000 people crossed the English Channel and 695 small boats arrived in the UK without permission in 2024, according to Home Office statistics.More than 24,000 people have crossed the Channel on small boats so far this year, current figures show.

Exchange student, 13, in custody after 14-year-old girl fatally stabbed at NSW host family home

A teenage Chinese girl has been killed and her fellow student arrested following a stabbing at their host family's home. The 13-year-old girl, also a Chinese student, was assisting police on Tuesday afternoon following the death of the 14-year-old in the NSW Hunter region. The pair travelled to Australia as part of a program to attend a local school and were staying at the same residence. 'We're not aware of any other relationship between the two young girls other than they were both part of this program and staying with the host family,' NSW police Supt Tracy Chapman told reporters. Sign up: AU Breaking News email The stabbing allegedly took place after residents of the home, west of Newcastle, had gone to bed. Emergency services were called about 10.20pm on Monday after one of the hosts heard a commotion and found the 14-year-old girl with stab wounds. She was treated at the scene before paramedics took her to John Hunter hospital, where she later died. A kitchen knife was seized for forensic examination. No charges have been laid. The students arrived in Australia in late July and were expected to depart in mid-August, Chapman said. Police were working with the Chinese consulate to notify their families. Specialist detectives and the homicide squad are part of the complex investigation. 'As you can imagine, an investigation with young girls involved, language barriers, working through the consulate – they're not Australian residents obviously - and so there are obvious complications,' Chapman said.

Sparkly fizzy, and on the rocks. With Irish lemon and lime, also! For adding. ICE COLD! 'Our Coca Cola factory is just 5 minutes away on the long mile road, walking distance, from the black forge inn! ''GIVE THAT BOY A CAN OF COKE!' You are going to LOVE IT! The unique, true, IRISH EXPERIENCE!' Alongside the social media message, Conor included an AI image of himself and Trump dressed as medieval knights around a table of meat and potatoes. In the image, Trump is drinking a can of Coca Cola. The fighter's pub was recently set on fire, with authorities treating the blaze as criminal damage. Meanwhile last week the ex-MMA star lost his attempt to overturn a jury's order that he compensate a woman who accused him of raping her. The court rejected the appeal in its entirety. Nikita Hand alleged that Conor sexually assaulted her on December 9, 2018. He was found liable in November and three Dublin judges rejected all five grounds of the MMA fighter's appeal. Conor was ordered to pay nearly €250,000 ($290,000), plus costs after Hand accused him of raping her at a hotel in Dublin in 2018. He denied the allegation and said he had 'fully consensual sex'. He also denied causing bruising to the plaintiff. Conor was not present for last week's decision, with Hand claiming she had been 'retraumatized' by the appeal. She said: 'To every survivor out there, I know how hard it is but please don't be silenced. You deserve to be heard. You also deserve justice.' Trump hosted the Irish MMA star and his family in the Oval Office on St Patrick's Day, with McGregor even vowing to raise concerns over immigration in Ireland with the president. The star, who also attended Trump's inauguration in January, praised the president's 'inspiring' work ethic.
