Houthis Sink Cargo Vessel ETERNITY C in Red Sea (VIDEO)

The strategic waterways of the Red Sea have once again become a flashpoint of regional conflict following a deadly attack on the Liberian-flagged cargo ship ETERNITY C.
Yesterday, Houthi rebel forces launched a sophisticated assault on the vessel, using a combination of drone boats and guided missile strikes, leading to the eventual sinking of the ship and significant casualties among its crew.
The attack occurred roughly 50 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah, a known Houthi stronghold. According to multiple verified sources, the assault began with an unmanned explosive boat targeting the vessel's hull, followed by precision-guided missiles that disabled the ship's engine and critical communication systems. The crew's attempts to control the damage failed, and as the vessel started to take on water, the captain ordered an emergency evacuation.
Despite rescue efforts, at least three crew members lost their lives, with several others sustaining severe injuries, including one sailor who reportedly lost a leg. Survivors were rescued from the water by nearby vessels and local fishing boats. The ETERNITY C, owned by a Greek shipping company, ultimately sank in the early hours of July 9, marking one of the deadliest maritime incidents in the Red Sea in recent years.
The Houthi movement, officially known as Ansar Allah, publicly claimed responsibility for the attack. They released a video documenting the operation, showcasing their use of unmanned maritime drones and ballistic missiles. The group justified the strike as part of their broader campaign against vessels heading to Israeli ports, pledging to target any ship linked to Israel 'regardless of nationality.'
This declaration underscores a marked shift in the conflict's maritime dimension, as the Houthis intensify their naval capabilities to disrupt international shipping lanes, particularly those connected to Israel.
This attack comes on the heels of another recent assault on the cargo vessel Magic Seas, signaling a troubling escalation in Houthi naval aggression. The Red Sea, a vital corridor for global trade linking Europe, Asia, and Africa via the Suez Canal, faces increasing risks that threaten to disrupt international shipping and economic stability.
In response, maritime insurance premiums for vessels transiting the Red Sea have surged, with coverage costs rising from 0.4% to nearly 1% of a ship's value. Shipping companies are weighing the risks of rerouting, which could increase transit times and costs substantially.
International actors including the United States, the European Union, and the United Nations have condemned the attacks, viewing them as grave threats to freedom of navigation and global commerce. Discussions of a coordinated multinational naval patrol to secure the Red Sea are reportedly underway.
The attack on ETERNITY C coincides with heightened tensions across the Middle East, particularly amid ongoing hostilities involving Israel and Palestinian factions. The Houthis' explicit linkage of their maritime operations to the Israeli conflict signals a widening of the regional proxy wars into maritime domains.
Analysts warn that without effective diplomatic engagement and enhanced maritime security measures, the Red Sea could become a permanent theater of conflict, jeopardizing the critical supply chains that millions rely upon.

Israeli Military Confirms Drone Crash in Southern Lebanon

Taarek Refaat The Israeli military confirmed on Friday that one of its drones crashed in southern Lebanon during the night, attributing the incident to a technical malfunction. The military statement emphasized that there were no concerns about sensitive information being leaked. In a statement published by Yedioth Ahronoth, Israel's prominent newspaper, the military clarified that the drone's failure was caused by a technical issue and assured that there was no risk of security breaches. "The drone crashed due to a technical malfunction, and there are no concerns regarding the leak of sensitive information," the statement read. An investigation into the incident is currently underway. Earlier reports by Lebanese media outlet Al-Mayadeen, which is closely associated with Hezbollah, claimed that the Israeli drone had targeted a vehicle in the Kfarkila region of southern Lebanon before it crashed and exploded. While the Lebanese outlet suggested an attack on a vehicle, the Israeli military has not confirmed these allegations. This incident comes amid heightened security tensions along the Lebanese-Palestinian border, with increasing use of drones by both sides for surveillance and targeted operations. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has become more prevalent in recent months as the region experiences escalating hostilities and military activity. The crash is likely to add further strain to an already volatile situation. While Israel has often used drones for reconnaissance and surveillance missions along the border, the crash of an Israeli drone in Lebanon raises concerns over the potential for further incidents and retaliation. As the investigation continues, Israel's military authorities have not ruled out the possibility of further operational adjustments to prevent similar incidents in the future. However, they maintain confidence that no sensitive intelligence was compromised during the event. The use of drones in the region continues to be a focal point of security operations, and experts predict that their role in the Israeli-Lebanese conflict will only increase, especially as both sides look to maintain their technological edge in an increasingly tense environment. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language

Russia closing Polish consulate in tit-for-tat move - International

Russia said Friday it would close Poland's consulate in Kaliningrad, a Moscow exclave near Poland and Lithuania, after Warsaw decided to shut the Russian consulate in Krakow. Diplomatic ties between Moscow and Warsaw have been historically strained and frayed further over Russia's offensive in Ukraine, which Poland is supporting politically and with military aid. In May, Poland ordered the Russian consulate in the southern city of Krakow shut after authorities accused Moscow of orchestrating a fire that destroyed a Warsaw shopping centre last year. Poland -- a NATO and European Union member -- is one of the main countries through which Western nations supply weapons and ammunition to Kyiv. Russia vowed an "adequate response" and on Friday the foreign ministry said it was "withdrawing consent for the functioning of the Consulate General of Poland in Kaliningrad from August 29". It also said Poland's charge d'affaires in Russia was summoned and handed a formal note announcing the move. "This step was caused by the unfounded and hostile actions of the Polish side, expressed in the reduction of the Russian consular presence on the territory of Poland," it added. In May 2024, Poland imposed restrictions on the movements of Russian diplomats on its soil, due to Moscow's "involvement" in what it called a "hybrid war". Poland later ordered the closure of Russia's consulate in Poznan and said it was willing to close the other consulates if acts of "terrorism" continued. In January, Russia closed the Polish consulate in Saint Petersburg in retaliation. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Trump threatens Canada with 35 percent tariff rate starting 1 Aug - Economy

Canada will face a 35 percent tariff on exports to the United States starting 1 August, President Donald Trump said Thursday in a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney. It was the latest of more than 20 such letters issued by Trump since Monday, as he continues to pursue his trade war threats against dozens of economies. Canada and the US have been locked in trade negotiations in hopes of reaching a deal by 21 July, but the latest threat appeared to have shifted that deadline. Both Canada and Mexico are trying to find ways to satisfy Trump so that the free trade deal uniting the three countries -- known as the USMCA -- can be put back on track. "Throughout the current trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses. We will continue to do so as we work towards the revised deadline of August 1," Carney posted on social media platform X Thursday night. The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement replaced the previous NAFTA accord in July 2020, after Trump successfully pushed for a renegotiation during his first term in office. It was due to be reviewed by July next year, but Trump has thrown the process into disarray by launching his trade wars after he took office in January. Canadian and Mexican products were initially hard hit by 25 percent US tariffs, with a lower rate for Canadian energy. Trump targeted both neighbors, saying they did not do enough on illegal immigration and the flow of illicit drugs -- particularly fentanyl -- across borders. Canada contributes less than one percent of the drug to the illicit US supply, according to Canadian and US government data. Trump eventually announced exemptions for goods entering his country under the USMCA, covering large swaths of products. The USMCA exemptions are poised to remain unchanged, Bloomberg reported, quoting an unnamed official. The letter on Thursday came despite what had been warming relations between Trump and Carney, who has been faced with his counterpart's regular musings that Canada should become the 51st US state. Reciprocity The Canadian leader came to the White House on 6 May and had a cordial meeting with Trump in the Oval Office. They met again at the G7 summit last month in Canada, where leaders pushed Trump to back away from his punishing trade war. Canada also agreed to rescind taxes impacting US tech firms that had prompted Trump to retaliate by calling off trade talks. Separately, Trump announced in an interview with NBC that he was also thinking of slapping blanket tariffs of between 15 and 20 percent on 1 August on countries that had not yet received one of his letters. The letters announce tariff rates of as much as 50 percent in the case of Brazil to kick in on 1 August unless better terms can be found before then. Trump told NBC that the letter to the 27-country European Union, the US's biggest trading partner, would be sent "today or tomorrow (Friday)." Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Thursday that he is willing to negotiate with the United States after Trump said he would hit the country with his tough tariff. He however reiterated that the Brazilian government is evaluating reciprocity measures. In his letter addressed to Lula, Trump criticized the treatment of his right-wing ally Jair Bolsonaro.
