Kevin De Bruyne 'held transfer talks with Liverpool' as Man City impact emerges
Kevin De Bruyne has decided to join Napoli after ending his almost decade-long stint with Manchester City and is said to have spoken to Liverpool about his future earlier this year
Kevin De Bruyne had a conversation with Liverpool before committing to Napoli this summer. The midfielder's contract was left to expire by Manchester City after the playmaker played a prominent role in the club's successes under Pep Guardiola.
De Bruyne signed for City almost a decade ago in then club-record deal for £55million. The Belgian had indicated that he would like to stay at the club this summer, but the team's hierarchy ultimately decided his journey would come to a closer.
That left De Bruyne in a position to consider his options, and while Napoli ultimately proved persuasive, the 33-year-old had alternative discussions. A 'short conversation' occurred with Liverpool, while Juventus enquired over a move and Inter Milan were unable to find space in their squad, as per the Athletic.
But the choice came down to Chicago Fire and Napoli with the Serie A side winning out. And Manchester City may have even played a role in aiding De Bruyne's decision.
It is reported that De Bruyne was in-part motivated to opt for Napoli in order to prove City wrong for letting him go. The Champions League and the opportunity to play under Antonio Conte were said to be decisive factors.
De Bruyne noted earlier this year that he was 'surprised but I just have to accept it' after City made their decision. The veteran told the club he still had a lot to give but never received an offer.
De Bruyne's move to Napoli was announced early in June as a picture of the Belgium international alongside Napoli club president Aurelio De Laurentiis was posted. The Premier League legend included a short message to his new club: "Sono qui."
That translates to 'I am here' in English. De Laurentiis also posted the photograph on his social media pages, along with the comment: "Benvenuto Kevin!" That translates into 'Welcome Kevin' in English.
De Bruyne will hope to have as big an impact as Scott McTominay following his move to Napoli last summer. The Scotland international helped the club to Serie A glory and earned the accolade of being named the Italian top-flight's Player of the Year.

EPL club 'complete deal' to sign Rangers academy talent

Read more: Newcastle are said to have beaten several other top-flight English clubs to the youngster's signature. 🚨⚪️⚫️ Excl: Newcastle complete deal to sign talent Alfie Hutchison from Rangers, agreement in place.#NUFC beat several PL clubs to secure 16 year old striker for the Academy. — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) June 28, 2025 It comes after Romano recently revealed that Rangers had missed out on the signing of Kwame Poku from Peterborough United. The talented winger has instead opted to sign for English Championship side Queens Park Rangers. Rangers were interested in a move, but as time has gone on, it has become increasingly apparent that the player wanted to remain in the south of England. Romano now reports that a deal for Poku to join QPR is '100 per cent done', after he signed for the club this morning. Although they have missed out on Poku and appear to have lost youngster Hutchison, Rangers completed the signing of Max Aarons during the week. The right-back became the Ibrox club's second summer addition after joining on a season-long loan deal from English Premier League side Bournemouth. He and Lyall Cameron have both been added to new head coach Russell Martin's ranks ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Jurgen Klopp sends warning to Florian Wirtz and admits Liverpool fee is 'insane'
Florian Wirtz's move to Liverpool has smashed the British transfer record after the Reds agreed to pay a colossal £116million for the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Jurgen Klopp has warned new Liverpool star Florian Wirtz that his £116million price tag will put a target on his back. Wirtz, 22, has joined the Reds in a British record-transfer deal, signing a lucrative five-year contract. Liverpool fended off interest from Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to sign the Germany international from Bayer Leverkusen. Klopp's former club will pay Leverkusen a fixed £100m plus £16m in potential add-ons. Despite describing Wirtz as an 'outstanding player', the ex-Reds boss can't help but baulk at the fee. In an interview with German newspaper Welt, Klopp said: "There's no question about it, it's an insane sum, and one that a player at Liverpool is aware of if things don't go well for two or three games. "We all agree that we're talking about a great player here. I know I once said that I'm out if we pay 100 million euros for a player. But the world is changing. That's just the way the market is." The 58-year-old went on to hail Wirtz, who has the difficult task of improving the Premier League champions. "I don't know exactly which position Arne (Slot) has Florian in mind for," Klopp noted. "He's an outstanding player who can give any club something great. Whether he'll make the reigning English champions even better remains to be seen." It's not the first time that Klopp has commented on Wirtz's record-breaking move to Anfield. Speaking to German broadcaster RTL last week, Red Bull's head of global football operations said: "It will be really, really great. I'm sure of it. "It's very difficult to strengthen them when you're champions. But Liverpool have managed that. They've signed an exceptional talent in Florian Wirtz." Klopp will be able to get the inside track on Wirtz's progress thanks to maintaining a strong relationship with Liverpool. "We're in very good contact - with some of the players who write now and then or send the occasional photo from their holidays," he revealed to Welt. "The owners have become good friends." Klopp also joked: "I've also written to Arne now and then; we've only seen each other once. He was pleased with my gesture back then. And to be honest: when things started off so well under him, I briefly asked myself as a person whether I was happy that things were like this."
